East Juniors (U14s and U17s)
Trials this years will be at Ely RFC in Cambridgeshire (Downham Road Playing Field, Ely, CB6 2SH) on 28th January from 1pm to 3pm. For the first time this will be a closed trial.
- Nominated trialists for the U14 squad are listed here
- Nominated trialists for the U17 squad are listed here
Everyone nominated must still confirm that they are going to attend by completing this form and returning it to RFUW (not East Region) by 19th January. If forms are not returned by this date it will be assumed that girls have turned down their invitation.
As a result players who do not return a form and simply turn up on the day, even if they appear on the above lists, will probably find that they are unable to take part in the trial - indeed it is RFUW policy that they should not be allowed to trial in such circumstances.
RFUW regretably still have to charge a fee for trials and - if selected - squad. Details appear on the form. However, grants are often available from local authoities to cover such costs - please apply to district council where you live (not where your club is based) for details.
If you are unable to attend trials on the 28th but still wish to be considered for the squad you MUST notify the Regional Programme Manager as soon as possible and MAY be allowed to trial on another date dependent on reports from county coaches, and so long as you can fully commit to the rest of the programme. The dates of all training and regional fixtures appear here.
Six girls from the U17 TDGs have automatically been selected for the U17 squad. The RFUW recommends that they still attend trials, but East region will not enforce this. The remaining 60 U17 girls will be competing for the remaining 24 places.
33 U14s will be competing for 25 places in the U14 squad. There are no pre-selections for this squad this season.
Not all squad members will be selected to take part in all warm-up fixtures or the final festival at Rugby School. However as the Regional Programme is still considered to be a DEVELOPMENT programme all girls in the squad will be guaranteed at least ONE game on either 18th March or 1st April, should they be available. Note that this guarantee does NOT this year include to the National Festival at Rugby. However, all girls who are selected in the squad to go to Rugby (expected to be c20 U14s and c25 U17s) should get at least one game on the day.
Regional rugby is growing in importance year on year and is now seen as the key first step in the player pathway. Good performances at regional level can lead to selection for summer PDAs, and then onto the new Talent Development Groups (TDGs). Several girls have already emerged in past years from East's regional programme to win places at England U19 and even full international level.
If anyone has any questions or comments on any aspect of this process PLEASE contact the RPM asap. This is the first time we have gone for closed trials in East and we want to ensure that we have got it right.
