RFU President's XV Awards for Grassroots Rugby Heroes
North Dorset RFC - Seal of Approval Club of the Year
Oakmeadians RFC - Girl Power Runners Up
Weymouth RFC - Young Volunteers Runners Up AND Veterans Runners Up
Weymouth Rugby Club is the only club in the country to have won two of these prestigious awards.
The first award was for encouraging young volunteers to get involved in the running of the club and to learn new skills.
The second award was for successfully organising a veterans team to enable older players
to continue to play the game for enjoyment without the pressures of competitive rugby.
The veterans team has also helped the club recruit new officials.
These awards recognise the work being carried out across the country at the grassroots level of the game
and were presented to the club at its Annual General Meeting by Willie Wildash,
RFU Junior Vice President Elect.
Willie said he was absolutely delighted to be able to present these awards,
on behalf of the President of the Rugby Football Union,
to the Weymouth club which he joined 48 years ago.
RFU president Brian Williams said:
"It's an honour to be able to highlight the outstanding work done by thousands of volunteers to make the game flourish."
The awards were decided by a panel of judges which included Williams,
England's most capped player Jason Leonard
and Rugby World editor Paul Morgan.
