Dorset & Wilts School of Rugby
2007/8
The RFU have introduced a significant change in emphasis on how representative rugby is to be delivered and how the very best players can be developed to represent England in future years.
At the beginning of this season, Dorset & Wilts set up a School of Rugby (SoR) which operates at the U13, U14, U15 and U16 age groups.
The aim of the SoRs is to provide the very best players with the best coaching available.
It is
NOT
to prepare players for matches.
The players are coached in line with a core skills curriculum devised by the RFU based on skill development and game understanding.
Nominations and Selection
Schools, Clubs and Colleges were invited to nominate players who were considered to have potential to attend the various trials last September/October. Those players were assessed by a team of selectors to play District rugby or full D&W representative rugby. At the same time, selectors looked out for players to join the SoR to begin the Elite Rugby Development Programme. The U13s had a separate SoR trial, as there is no representative rugby at that age group.
The maximum number of players in each SoR age group is limited to 25 per age grade (35 at U13). This is considered a realistic level given the high standards that are required. It is anticipated that in the early years the number of players will be less than the maximum allowed.
Coaching
The RFU, DWRFU and the Bath Academy have assessed a number of coaches. Those appointed in the first phase have received training from the RFU and Bath RFC Academy staff to ensure that the programme is delivered in the right way by the coaches and to the highest standards.
Details of the staff involved can be found on the D&W SoR main page

Venues
This season the SoR has taken place at various venues in Dorset and Wiltshire. Unfortunately, due to the large area covered by the two counties this has involved a considerable amount of travel for some players. We meet roughly once a month, usually on a Monday evening. The sessions begin at 1800 and end at 2030. Refreshments are available for players and parents on arrival.
Player Progress and Ongoing Assessments
Targets are set for each player by coaches and worked on by players between sessions. There are also written appraisals for all players and these will be used to track player progress, and act as individual player improvement plans.
