Dorset and Wiltshire Coaching Committee
Coach and Selector Development Plan
Updated 29 June 2010
Dorset and Wiltshire CB are committed to achieving ‘best practice’ in their representative system and that every player that comes into contact with the CB selection or playing structure has a positive experience.
In order to achieve this there is an ongoing process of recruitment and refinement with the selection criteria for both players and coaches. Listed below are the targets set for 2009.
Independent Body of Selectors
The D&W’s rugby selectors development committee has a training programme for new selectors to work with experienced selectors that is geared up to assist new and emerging selectors to understand the role of the selector, selection process, how to deliver feed-back, how to manage feed-back sessions and of course how to work with coaches and managers whilst remaining independent. Currently there are twelve selectors assigned to D&W’s RFU working with Coaches and Managers from U14 to U20 age groups. This team has a Lead Selector, Gordon Harding, who plans and co-ordinates the season's selection requirements.

Head Coaches of County Squads
- Should be minimum L2 RFU qualified (L3 preferable) þ
- Should not be involved with club rugby at the same age group þ
- Post should be advertised, applicants interviewed by DW Chair of Coaching and independent RFU advisor and awarded for period of 3 years þ
- Head Coaches, once appointed, will put forward their own choice of back up staff that must be approved by the DW Coaching Committee before the season commences. Assistant Coaches may be involved with club teams of that age group however they will not be involved in selection of their own clubs players. No coach may be involved with an age group in which a close family member (son/daughter/sibling) is trialling.

District Coaches
Dorset and Wiltshire have a district system in place for identifying county players at both U14 and U15 levels. Players will trial for 1 of 3 districts based on geography. The 3 districts will then play against each other with players being identified for the county squad from those games. This will mean that trials will be smaller and players with potential will find it easier to be appropriately identified. DWRFU is targeting to achieve the same clarity and quality of selection and coaching for the district squads as it strives for with the county sides:
· Should be minimum L2 RFU qualified (L3 preferable) þ
· Should not be involved with club rugby at the same age group þ
· Post should be advertised, applicants interviewed by DW Chair of Coaching and independent RFU advisor and awarded for a fixed period of 3 yearsþ
· Head Coach for the County Side should not be involved with any of the 3 District sides to ensure openness and fairness of selection þ
