Match Report. Dorset & Wiltshire v Berkshire. Sunday 14th March 2010
Dorset & Wiltshire 40 Berkshire 3
An effective and confident performance gave the D&W Under 15’s a convincing win over Berkshire at Westbury RFC on Sunday 14th March. A well-contested match played in good spirit saw the Berkshire strategy of using their big pack undermined by determined forward opposition and blistering pace from the D&W backs.
The first score came in just four minutes when a loose kick by Berkshire into the D&W 22 was neatly collected by fullback Liam Spillane who spotted a good overlap to his left and began the the run out of defence. The ball was quickly passed to winger Sam Weston who sprinted 60 metres leaving the Berkshire backs in his wake, to score under the posts. The conversion was by David Buck. Berkshire had a chance to reply with a penalty in front of the posts but the distance was a bit too much for the Berkshire placekicker. Five minutes later a concerted attack by the D&W forwards on the Berkshire line led to some sharp work by scrumhalf Will Waddington who saw space on the open side and delivered a swift pass to his backs. Max Clark had no need for the players outside him and went over for a good score. Unfortunately D&W discipline interfered with their play and upon the restart they conceded another penalty in front of the posts. This time the Berkshire boot was good. Another mistake by D&W led to the ball going straight out at the restart and Berkshire called for a scrum on the centre spot. This was to prove their undoing; D&W forwards applied good pressure and the scrum was won against the head. A good break by Will Waddington led to some fast handling by the backs sending Sam Weston over for his second try. David Buck kicked a good conversion. Not to be outdone, three minutes later Freddie Wright on the other wing scored after some loose play, D&W keeping the ball alive and finally a good offload by Liam Spillane to send his winger over. Buck converted once again and the half-time score was 26 -3.
Some good coaching advice brought Berkshire out with a new determination and it wasn’t until ten minutes into the half that D&W made a breakthrough. After a defence destroying run in which he broke through three tackles replacement scrum-half Charlie Samways set up a ruck. The ball was quickly delivered to the backs and it was an easy run in for Max Clark to score his second try. Again David Buck was faultless with his conversion. Berkshire were down not out and they continued to make life difficult for D&W. A couple of stops for injuries disjointed the match a little and it was another ten minutes before a loose kick from Berkshire was cleaned up by the attacking D&W side. After throwing the ball around and exploring the options the ball was taken by replacement flanker Harry Cleeves. Unstoppable, he made a good break down the blind side and with a beautifully timed pass put his captain, centre Callum King over in the corner. David Buck converted from the touchline and that was the final score. Some good defensive play from prop Tom King ensured that Berkshire didn’t cross the D&W line in the latter stages of the game.
This was a fine performance by the whole squad and none of the above could have taken place without the hard, skilled work put in by all those not named. A really good squad performance.
Thanks to Ron Jones and his colleagues at Westbury RFC for providing a warm welcome, a good dinner and excellent facilities.
Match Report. Dorset & Wiltshire v Somerset. Sunday 11th April 2010
Dorset & Wiltshire 30. Somerset 0
Another fine performance at Martock RFC saw the Under 15’s beat Somerset convincingly with a 30 - 0 victory. Throughout the match excellent work winning the ball by flanker James Martin and solid tackling in defence by fullback Liam Spillane, together with a strong tight five that repulsed everything near their line, shut Somerset out from any scoring opportunities.
After 6 minutes the forwards won a penalty at a ruck which was quickly converted into points by flyhalf David Buck. Somerset forwards fought back and it wasn’t until 15 minutes that scrumhalf Will Waddington made a devastating break from the scrum at halfway and carried nearly to the 22. In close support was No. 8 Rhys Brown who took the pass from Waddington before offloading to Buck to finish off a superb try. The rest of the half found the D&W forwards well tested by Somerset who turned over ball several times but the backs were unable to capilise.
Two early attacks by Somerset in the second half were well defended and it wasn’t until the 10 minute mark that D&W were awarded a penalty 35 metres out which was well taken by Buck. 5 minutes later the standoff made a fine break inside his own half. He was superbly supported by replacement scrumhalf Charlie Samways who ran half the pitch evading tackles to place the ball over the line. Unfortunately the referee (who did not have the benefit of the TMO) adjudged the ball held up and awarded an attacking scrum. There followed a penalty and a quick-thinking Samways tapped immediately and fed his backs. Winger Freddie Wright took the inevitable score in the corner. The successful long-range conversion was taken by Buck. 2 minutes later on 18 minutes after a solid scrum by the forwards, a fine break by captain Callum King led to him feeding his flyhalf with a nice pass to put Buck over in the corner. Somerset mounted a strong attack through their forwards but they were held out by some strong defensive tackling by youngster Rory Jennings and the solid front three. On 28 minutes a strong break from the 22 by No. 8 Rhys Brown devastated the Somerset pack which had been attacking hard. He was well supported by blindside flanker Ryan Parry who carried the ball further until offloading back to Parry. He was brought down short of the line but a quick ball to Rory Jennings and a nice inside step led to the final D&W score which was converted once again by Buck.
This was a fine game to watch with some great skill on display. All players contributed significantly. Despite a lot of pressure the forwards provided a solid platform thus enabling the backs to score.
Match Report. Dorset & Wiltshire v Gloucestershire. Monday 26th April.
Dorset & Wiltshire 20 Gloucestershire 10
A much sterner test than previous matches saw D&W flying their full colours as they defeated a strong Gloucester side. Right from the kick-off it was clear that Gloucester had a powerful pack and for the first 15 minutes or so their powerful rucking was met with some excellent defence by D&W. The game stayed in the middle of the park as neither side was willing to give ground. After 19 minutes Gloucester had strayed into Buck kicking territory so when they gave away penalty at the ruck flyhalf David Buck immediately came forward to score the first points of the game. It wasn't until 10 minutes later, just before half time that the sharp D&W backs were able to break through the Gloucester defensive line. An untidy kick by Gloucester was tidied up by scrumhalf Charlie Samways who embarked on an evasive run to set David Buck up for a 45 metre dash for the line. He still had plenty to do but once broken through there didn't seem to be anyone to catch him. He converted his own try and the sides broke for half time with D&W 10 - 0 up.
The second half saw some changes in both teams but by far the most testing for D&W was the Gloucester change at fullback. With intelligent kicking and some mature reading of the game the Gloucester replacement 15 was able to keep D&W well pinned down in their own half. The D&W forwards fought magnificently with James Martin on the open side forcing Gloucester to fight for every inch of territory. His battles on the ground were crucial in the D&W defence. After a more deternined attack Gloucester found their way through and scored their first points. The try went unconverted. Buoyed up by their score the Gloucester forwards came back ferociously and scored again after a further 10 minutes of hard rugby. Again the try was unconverted and the scores were level halfway through the second half. Once again Gloucester conceded a penalty inside their own 22 and 10 metres in from the touchline. David Buck performed again and kicked beautifully to put the D&W nose in front. Until 2 minutes to go it seemed as if the game was very well balanced. Very exciting with some excellent rugby being played by forwards and backs alike. Then a little bit of rugby magic as Liam Spillane at fullback cut a line between his centres to score under the posts. The Gloucester backs didn't see him coming and were left entirely wrong-footed. Buck converted and the final score was 20 - 10 to the visitors.
Once again, despite the names above, all played magnificently and it was a delight to watch such a high standard of rugby at this age group. My best wishes for the future after this outstanding season.
