D&W U 17s U18s 2006-7
D&W Under 17s v Cornwall on 18th March.
A close game with a controversial refereeing intervention which stopped the game for an injury just when D&W were about to score. Further heartbreak came in the final seconds of the game when D&W having scored under the posts needed a conversion to earn a draw but the kick was charged down. Nevertheless an excellent performance by the team captained for the first time by Nick Farrant.

The England South West trials were held on a very wet and windy day at Clifton College in Bristol on Sunday 3 December and I suspect the weather had a big impact on final selection as it was not a day for backs play. When the squad selection was announced, two Dorset and Wilts players had made it into the squad so I hope all who read this will join me in passing congratulations on to Ted Stagg (Hooker - Colstons School) and Josh Ovens (6 - Milton Abbey School) and hope that they will get over the final hurdle at the Divisional Tournament being held after Christmas and gain full England honours. I also hope you will join me in passing on commiserations to all those players who made it through to the trials but failed to be selected for the final South West Squad.
However, for one non-selected player, disappointment has since changed into a positive result as Michael Errington (11-Bournemouth RFC) was invited into the squad at short notice and asked to attend the five day training camp held at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire. Michael has since been selected as a member of the South West squad and will also take part in the Divisional Tournament.......so congratulations need to be handed on to Mike as well !
Here's hoping that we see some England caps on Dorset & Wilts players heads soon.

The campaign started with a tremendous 50+ point win away to Buckinghamshire but this victory was tainted due to some internal miscommunication regarding the cut off dates of players who took the field of play to be eligible to play for England South West. This resulted in a total of seven players having to be informed that they could not now play in any of the remaining matches as they were born before 1 January 1989 (and one player was born on 31 December 1988 which was even more disappointing for him !).
The whole episode was extremely frustrating for the players involved and embarrassing for the D&W RFU management alike. On behalf of D&W RFU I would therefore like to pass on my apologies to all players & parents who were affected……This will not happen again whilst I am involved !
The second match was at Canford School against Oxfordshire where we had the tables turned on as we received a bit of a thumping. This was totally down to the fact that we had to lose a number of players because of the above problem and another five key players were also away with their school. We therefore had to draft a number of players into the squad at short notice and, even though the result was disappointing, I would like to thank all who took part on the day for their efforts.
We were back at full strength for the final game against Berkshire under lights up in Reading and all players put up a magnificent performance which ended up (at least on the referees score card) as a 24 all draw. It was a great team show and there were some fine individual performances on the evening that obviously impressed the selectors.
The painful, and somewhat emotional part, however, was having to see a group of players, who had gelled so quickly into a great team in such a short space of time, all splitting up and going their separate ways….to await the South West selectors decision.
When South West did announce the list of players they wanted to invited to South West trials on 3 December, Dorset & Wilts had the second highest number of invited players. A total of seven D&W players were invited to attend the trial which is a tremendous result ! The number was way behind Gloucestershire, who had eighteen players invited, but was higher than all other counties in the combined area 6 and area 7 region – apart from Devon who also had seven players invited.
The players invited to attend South West Trials were:
2 Edward Stagg Colstons School
4 Tom Pampiglione Bournemouth School / Bournemouth RFC
6 Josh Ovens Milton Abbey School / Bath RFC
10 Cameron Brown Colstons School
11 Michael Errington Bournemouth School / Bournemouth RFC
12 Peter Rawson Hardenhish School / Chippenham RFC
14 James Dazely Colstons School
This really is a success for D&W U18’s and I would like to pass on my congratulations to all involved this season….whether invited to South West trials or not…..as the commitment and attitude of ALL players and the quality of play was second to none.
I would also like to thank all the coaches involved this season as they really have worked with dedication in support of the players and myself. The coaches in question were:
Gareth Jones (Devizes RFC) - Lead Coach and Backs Coach
Andy Gould (Swanage & Wareham RFC) - Backs Coach
John ‘Topper’ Brown (Swindon RFC) - Forwards Coach
Chris Stagg (Wimborne RFC) - Forwards Coach
Mark Bugden (Salisbury RFC) - Forwards Coach
….and a final thank you to Graham Lacey for his support ….especially making the trial administration almost run like clockwork.
Wishing all future success with their rugby aspirations this season and beyond.
