D&W U15s 5 - 20 Gwent

Dorset & Wilts' first game saw them take on a big Gwent side playing their fifth game of the season, so far unbeaten.
The initial exchanges were shared before our backs were caught offside at a ruck in front of their posts after 10 minutes and Gwent kicked the penalty (0-3). D&W responded well, led admirably by Chris Nicholas at 9 and a series of pick and go drives in the Gwent 22 led to Seb Culpan-Scott scoring a try after 15 minutes (5-3). Despite further pressure from the Gwent back row and midfield, the score stayed unchanged for the rest of the half, with Lawrence Minto playing a prominent part.
After three changes at half-time, the pattern continued on from the end of the first half, with D&W tackling anything that moved, so frustrating Gwent. Eventually, after a series of forward drives, Gwent scored in the fifteenth minute of the second half (5-8). D&W then made their last four substitutions and the next ten minutes were mainly played in the middle third of the field, but then Gwent scored again in the sixty-fifth minute following another forward drive (5-13) and finished the match with a try in the seventy-fifth minute (5-20).
This was a tough start against a big physical side. The squad played particularly well in the first half but ran out of steam in the last quarter, the tackle count at that stage must have been about 2 to 1 against D&W. However, this was a promising start against a team which already had four wins under their belt.
Thanks to Peter Livesey and his team at Chippenham RFC for looking after us so well.
