Squad: Joe Balchin, Andrew Bufton, Paul Darville, Ewan Duffin, Nick Emtage (Capt), Tom Heathcote, Neil Jenkins, Dan Norcross, Harry Scott, Tom Sheppard, James Starkey, James Stephenson, Dean Summerbell, Joe Swain, Will Thomas, James Walter
Day One - Three Pool games
Dorset & Wiltshire 12 - 12 Hertfordshire
Despite playing in the 15-a-side mode for most of the match, we scraped a draw 12-12 with a try in the dying minutes from Ewan Duffin.
Tries: Neil Jenkins, Ewan Duffin
Con: Tom Heathcote
Dorset & Wilts 22 - 7 Kent
Following a few choice words (facts of 10s rugby life) from Alan and Dan, the team went out and produced their best performance of the day, beating the eventual group winners 22-10.
Tries: Tom Heathcote, Ewan Duffin(2), Tom Sheppard
Con: Tom Heathcote
Dorset & Wilts 5 - 15 North Midlands
Unlucky to draw with Hertfordshire (12-12) and lose by a try in the last seconds to Kent (21-22), unfortunately North Midlands came good against our unusually hesitant team in the last game of the day. The promise of topping the group evaporated in a 5-15 loss and we ended up third in the group and in the Bowl competition on Monday.
Try: Nick Emtage
Day Two - Knock Out
Dorset & Wilts 24 - 0 Hampshire (Quarter Final)
Playing with the same style as against Kent, the team soaked up early pressure (0-0 at half time) and produced really good rugby in the second half to pull away to a 24-0 win, including our 'team try of the tournament' where eight pairs of hands led to James Stephenson scoring in the corner.
Tries: Tom Sheppard, Joe Balchin, Neil Jenkins, James Stephenson
Cons: Tom Heathcote(2)
Dorset & Wilts 14 - 0 Eastern Counties (Semi Final)
Following a bizarre delay because of 'shirt clashes', Eastern Counties provided sterner opposition, bu a great try finished by Ewan and a penalty try (a third each claimed by three players) saw the team through to a thoroughly deserved final.
Tries: Ewan Duffin, penalty
Con: Tom Heathcote(2)
Dorset & Wilts 12 - 15 Sussex (Bowl Final)
A good solid first half saw the team 12-0 up at half time with scorching tries from Neil and Paul on the wings. Unfortunately (that word again), Sussex came back with three unanswered tries in the second half to win 15-12.
Tries: Neil Jenkins, Paul Darville
Con: Tom Heathcote
Thanks to Alan and Dan, who saw their efforts come to fruition with the team finishing 18th out of the 28 counties represented; to the parents for all your support over the weekend, you were definitely the loudest supporters there!!; to our shirt sponsor Brittany Ferries (thanks, Steve) who made us the envy of all the other teams; and last but not least, to the squad who represented themselves and the Twin Counties impeccably off the field and played high quality rugby at times that has set the standard for future Dorset & Wilts teams to emulate.
