Statement from the Committee of the Devon Rugby Football Union
Following the SGM held on 22 September 2009 a Sub-Committee comprising of David Bassett, Roger Gash, Terry Friend and Geoff Simpson was set up to further investigate the application of Exeter Athletic RFC for Membership of Devon RFU
The Committee of the Devon RFU meeting on 25 November 2009 received a report submitted by David Bassett and Roger Gash. It accepted their advice that IRB Regulation 14 (specifically mentioned in the resolution passed at the SGM) appears to be very significantly wider in application than the limited context suggested by the RFU's Legal Officer but also recognised that the implications of placing a less restrictive interpretation on the Regulation were likely to extend much further than the determination of Exeter Athletic's application for Membership of its Constituent Body. In these circumstances the Committee felt unable to reach a conclusion which depended entirely on the appropriate weight to be given to a loosely drafted IRB Regulation and therefore decided to refer the matter formally to the RFU for their consideration

A NEW name will appear on all three Devon cups this season thanks to three-year sponsorship deal.
The Landscape Company South West, which is based in Daccombe near Newt on Abbot, has signed
up to sponsor the senior, intermediate and junior cups.
Devon RFU has struggled to find a reliable sponsor in recent years and didn’t have on e at all last seas on .
The Landscape Company has a history of supporting rugby teams and competitions and jumped at the
chance to get involved. The company already sponsor the U16 league in East Devon as well as Exeter Chiefs.
Matt Churchward, the company’s business development manager and a former Torquay Athletic player,
said a chance remark by Devon official Terry Friend led to them getting involved.
“We were talking to Terry about sponsoring the Dev on U16 Shield final between the two youth league winners
when he said he was looking for sponsors for all three cups at senior level,” said Churchward.
“Every one in our management is keen on rugby and sport in general and we thought it would be great to get
involved with the senior format as well.
“If we secure work as a result of this involvement that is an added bonus. For us the main focus is very much
about helping Devon RFU.
“Having played in the competitions we now sponsor, I never realised how much administrative time and expense
goes into running them.
“Hopefully our involvement can help ease some of this expense and allow the Devon RFU to continue their good work.”
Dave Bassett, the Devon official responsible for running the cup competitions, said the Landscape Company’s
involvement was well timed.
“With the overhaul of the cup competitions this season , and the creation of the Intermediate Cup and the Vase,
there are additional costs involved in running everything,” said Bassett.
“The Landscape Company already supports Devon rugby at youth level and we are pleased they have extended
their backing to the senior competitions.”
