Volunteers Award
Update
The YV05 Plaque is now proudly on display for all to
see over the main entrance to the Clubhouse following it's recent unveiling at
the highly successful Waverley Festival, hosted at Cranleigh RFC on 2 October
2005.
The honours were done by an excited Liz Townsend as the
Mayor of Waverley & her Consort looked on, together with Surrey CBRDP
Chairman Peter Vernon.
August 2005 has been
designated Sport Month in the Year of the Volunteer
In the Year of the
Volunteer Cranleigh Rugby Club was honoured at the home of English rugby on
Saturday before the final of the Middlesex 7's, in recognition of the club's
contribution to sport. Cranleigh
was one of only nine clubs selected from 1800 nationwide to receive this
award. Liz &
Philip Townsend,
representing Cranleigh at the ceremony, received a specially-commissioned YV05
plaque, presented on the pitch by World Champion Jason Leonard OBE. The plaque is one of 650 specially
commissioned plaques that were produced to recognise all volunteers working in
all areas in the UK.
In the last three
years Cranleigh have recruited 20 extra volunteers who have helped them make
major progress on and off the field.
After putting together their own development plan, they secured grant aid
to improve playing surfaces and facilities and have been recognised with RFU
Seal of Approval and Sport England Clubmark accreditation. The club has also been active in local
schools delivering Tag rugby courses for teachers and pupils. To build on this for the forthcoming
season, they have also been successful in securing a Community Sports Coach,
part funded by the RFU who will be concentrating on delivery in local
schools.
