Press Release
Cranleigh RFC U13s Record Breakers for CHASE
"Kids do it for Kids"
On 6 February 2005 18 members of Cranleigh Rugby Club's U13s squad smashed the current world record which was set 2 years ago, also by Cranleigh RFC, making 1979 rugby tackles in just 1 hour at their Wildwood Lane home. CRFC is an Associate Club of NEC Harlequins & was recently awarded "The RFU Seal of Approval" & "Clubmark" at a on pitch ceremony at the home of rugby, Twickenham.
A small army of helpers including many siblings & parents, local top class referee Andy Nicholls, Sue Tiplady from CHASE, Cranleigh RFC 1st Team Captain & U13s sponsor Rob Wheeler, as well as two professional cameramen, Martin Foley & Tim Spence, all helped to make the day a massive success.
Thanks must also go to all the people who pledged to sponsor the event thereby raising a total of over £2,250 which is still rising. This includes £142 collected on the day from the many spectators present at Cranleigh Rugby Club.
The money raised is being split 50/50 between CHASE, the local children's charity, & the CRFC Juniors Belgium 2005 Tour Fund to help buy shirts & meet other necessary costs.
Event organiser Toby Eves said afterwards: "I'd like to express my thanks to all those who helped set up what has been an amazingly successful day, raising more than we had ever imagined was possible, especially Linda Wallis, without whose support the event would never have got off the ground. Also Sue Tiplady from CHASE has been absolutely brilliant, as have all the people at CHASE."
CHASE representative Sue Tiplady said: "What has been so nice is to see kids doing it for kids less fortunate than themselves."
Notes for Editors:
CHASE: Registered Charity No.1042495 provides essential hospice care for children & is dedicated to the support of children who are not expected to reach their 19th birthday. For these children there is, at present, no hope of cure, but they & their families still need care & support over the course of the life ahead of them.
CRFC: Cranleigh Rugby Football Club provides opportunities for boys & girls from under 7's upwards to learn the best team game in the world, namely rugby football. The club is renowned for its warm & friendly welcome. CRFC has recently joined forces with NEC Harlequins as an Associate Club & been awarded "The RFU Seal of Approval" & "Clubmark" (making it only the 4th team in Surrey to achieve this benchmark).
GWR: Once all the documentary evidence has been put together CRFC will be submitting a World Record claim to Guinness World of Records for official verification.
