Cramberleigh Girls at Dubai 7s
Members of Cramberleigh girls' squad (cluster club of Camberley and Cranleigh RFC) were recently invited to play an exhibition match before the finals of the world famous Dubai International 7-a-side rugby tournament.
The girls were part of the victorious 'Cramberleigh' under 14 team who are the reigning national girls rugby sevens champions.
The match was played against the local Dubai Exiles girls who were unbeaten so far this season. After presenting their opponents with a commemorative shield and polo shirts for each player, donated by Surrey Rugby, the girls lined up in the tunnel in the places recently occupied by the best 7-a-side teams in the world. At the signal of the tournament organiser, the team were led on to the pitch by captain Victoria Beynon to the applause of some 20,000 enthusiastic spectators.
As soon as the match kicked off, all nerves were forgotten as the Cramberleigh girls showed why they are the best sevens team in the country with a comprehensive 19 points to nil victory over the Dubai Exiles who were not allowed to even venture into the Cramberleigh half of the field!
Thanks to the pressure defence of Camberley girls Victoria Beynon and Alex Matthews the Dubai team were unable to obtain any worthwhile possession of the ball, while Cramberleigh made the most of their scoring opportunities.
The girls enjoyed the extremely warm hospitality of their hosts and are hoping to return for a longer tour in the future in order to promote girls rugby in the Arabian Gulf.
Congratulations to Victoria Beynon, Alex Matthews, Fiona Davidson, Alex Chamberlain & Harriet Connor, and a huge thanks to Linda Wallis in Dubai who facilitated the trip.
