Cranleigh 2nd XV - The Eagles!
Will Davies (01483 275439 or 07899 883198) has taken on the job of 2nd XV Captain for 2007-08 & it is hoped that we will also enter an U21 side in the Christmas & Easter Surrey competitions, as well as fielding the occassional Academy/Development side to include the younger elements of the Senior playing squad alongside some of Mike White's U18s Colts side on weekend when there are no 1st XV Surrey 1 league or cup games & the U18s do not have a Sunday game.
Match Reports:
Cranleigh "Eagles" v Merton
20 October 2007
Will Davies' men ran out comfortable winners against a spirited Merton 2nd XV who were always competitive up front but lack Cranleigh's undoubted class in the backs where Davies, selecting himself at fly half, ran the show. Also prominent was the U18s Simon Warren who had an excellent game at full back until forced to leave the field early in the second half with a hip injury, the result of a particularly heavy tackle that he could not quite run off.
Another U18 who show have been playing was unable to make it on the day so Will summonded veteran prop Toby Eves from his line marking duties to join fellow vet Bob Macey in a highly experienced second row. With the like sof former 1st XV stalwart Gav Netley also up front the pack did not lack for a bit of rugby nous, even if it was not the most mobile unit that Cranleigh have ever fielded.
After the early exchanges Cranleigh ran in a couple of tries following some clever work by Davies to lead at half time & despite a fighting second half come back by Merton the home side were able to score a further late try to reassert their dominance & claim the points, greatly assisted by a steady steam of points from Davies' ever reliable boot.
Will had everyone pose for a photo under the posts afterwards which is now up on the main Club noticeboard by the bar if you want a laugh, seeing how some of the more rotund members of the side squeezed into the new body hugging 2nd XV 40th Anniversary Season shirts - if I ever figure out how to get pictures up on here I'll add it to the report!
