Colchester RFC U16’s 31 v Basildon RFC Under 16’s 27
Sunday 4th January 2008 – 12.15 kick off
Colchester Under 16’s returned to action after their mid winter break with a home fixture against south Essex opposition.
Conditions were challenging with a rock hard pitch and sub zero temperatures. Colchester playing towards United Way in the first half made a bright start with the impressive Alex Pakenham Walsh scoring early on close to the posts using his power and strength.
Callum Noble suffered an early injury resulting in skipper Sam Arnold switching from wing to full back. Further injuries followed, meaning the coaching duo of Llewelyn and Roome having to rearrange both the pack and backs during the first half.
Basildon took the game to Colchester during the remainder of the first half scoring two quick tries and converting one of them. The Basildon pack were beginning to dominate the game and Colchester struggled to obtain good quality ball.

Many home supporters succumbed to the clubhouse for much needed coffee and were slow to reappear for the second half ! A positive team talk did not result in any improvement with Basildon scoring again early in the second half.
This finally inspired Colchester into action with the quick thinking Alex Pakenham Walsh scoring directly from a penalty on the wing under the posts. The pacey prop who had been switched to a centre showed determination in bring Colchester back into the game.
Although the kick was missed, Dewi Llewelyn did find his kicking boots for the third try placing the ball deep into the Basildon half. The on rushing quick winger Jamie Pattle gambled on the bounce in his favour and after a couple of neat kicks scored under the posts. Dewi Llewelyn kicked the conversion and then showed some midfield brilliance after pack leader Jack Reynolds had been tackled off the ball to win a penalty. John Roome passed to Dewi who showed his skills side stepping several of the opposition before passing to Harry Chapman who finished the move scoring under the posts.
Colchester finished on a high with man of the match skipper Sam Arnold who’s defensive tackling in both the first and second had kept Colchester in the game split the Basildon defence by dropping his shoulder and going inside the defender before scoring.
Basildon rallied late on scoring a consolation try.
Final score – Colchester 31 Basildon 27
