Workington Steelers vs. Cockermouth RUFC
29th November2008
The key to success was clinical finishing by Cockermouth in each of the 4 tries they scored. On each occasion good pace and quick hands were the keys to each score and along with a try saving tackle by Jonny Taylor were enough to secure the victory.
Cockermouth had taken the lead on 6 mins when Ra Thompson drove over from close range after some good link play between forwards and backs and Andrew Skillen converted. The Steelers no. 8 scored a well deserved try on 16mins and on the half hour mark he broke again to within 10 metres of the Cockermouth try line. A superb tackle by flanker Johnny Taylor saved a certain try. On the stroke of half time Ross McGuire broke away for the visitors to score a try, which Andrew Skillen converted to give Cockermouth a 14-5 advantage at the break.
Early in the second half another powerful and incisive break by Luke Reason saw him evade several would be tacklers to score a super try and Ross McGuire completed the scoring with another well taken try after some quick handling by the Cockermouth backs.
This gave Cockermouth a comfortable 5 - 24 victory but credit should go to the Steelers for their hard work, ensuring that this never turned into a landslide victory for the visitors.
