Cockermouth christened their new pitch with a friendly match against Workington. On a cold but sunny day at Grasmoor vice-captain Emma Sutton with a pick and drive move scored the first ever try on the new pitch, converted by Captain Fiona McKay. Then from a drive McKay passed the ball to Clare Condron on the wing who scored the first of her five tries. Workington had some good lineouts and almost got to the try line but lost the ball in a turnover.
Cockermouth scrum half Rachel Wedgwood had a good run and scored the first of her two tries. Her second try was impressive with a run down three quarters of the pitch from a scrum. Clare Condron then ran in another try on the wing. Emily Agnew tanked up the field to feed the ball to Emma Sutton to go in for her second try. Charlotte Hodgson then ran three quarters of the pitch to go in for a try under the posts. The score at half time was 41 – 0.
The second half started with a try from Emily Agnew after a line out. Amy Albon then made a good pass to enable Clare Condron to cross the whitewash. At this point new player Rachel Parker came on for her debut with Cockermouth and played well in her first match. Charlotte Hodgson scored a second try from a turnover ball.
Workington never gave up and had a good run from a turnover ball. This was followed by a try from a breakaway run by Rebecca Thompson.
Cockermouth had two more new players on the park, Jose Harrington and Beth Riley who both had an excellent first game. Eloise Stott then crashed over the line for a try. Emily Agnew got a drive on and Clare Condron finished it with her fifth try.
Workington tried hard throughout the match and when they got the ball made good use of it.
Cockermouth’s play has improved this season with more structure, better communication and some excellent running. Thirteen tries and six conversions reflected good team working with every player having a good game.
