Cockermouth played host to the last of three festivals featuring the under 12 squads from the hosts, Keswick, Wigton and a Barbarian side made up of players from Egremont, Cockermouth & Keswick.
The first match saw the hosts take on the Barbarians in an exciting encounter that set the tone for the whole tournament. Cockermouth ran out 19 – 0 winners with 2 tries from Jo Fanthorpe and one from Peter Wilson but the Barbarians fought bravely and worked well for a team that had only come together 20 minutes before the start.
The second contest saw Keswick take on Wigton in a match that saw a well drilled Keswick side moving the ball wide at every opportunity to take the game by 19 points to nil.
Keswick took on the Barbarians next and continued to thrill, scoring five unanswered tries, 3 of which were converted, to lead the table with a 31 – 0 win. In the following game Cockermouth met Wigton and showed their power up front in scoring three tries, 2 of which were converted, to win 19 – 0, setting up a final league encounter with Keswick to win the tournament.
Wigton played the Barbarians in the penultimate encounter which the Barbarians won by 14 points to 7 in a game that continued the standard of rugby on display and saw the move of the tournament when a penalty was kicked, with some forethought, towards the far touchline for the Wigton winger to race on, collect the ball in goal and drop for the try.
In the end the deciding match between the hosts and Keswick was a classic encounter between a side dominated by forwards playing a tight game and free flowing Keswick who consistently moved the ball out wide. Cockermouth defended well to deny the Keswick backs and produced several attacks that saw them close to within inches of the Keswick try line. A tight encounter was decided by a converted try for Keswick who, despite a last ditch effort from Cockermouth 2 metres out, took the game 7 – 0 and therefore the winners trophy.
The trophy and winners medals were presented to Keswick on behalf of sponsor Mr David Bell, of the Weatsheaf, Embleton and runners up medals went to Cockermouth. Thanks go to all the players and coaches who took part, particularly those from Egremont and Keswick who took on the task of forging an effective Barbarian side.
Cockermouth RUFC would like to thank all the players and coaches from Egremont, Keswick and Wigton who have taken part in this series of festivals.
