The second half started poorly for Cockermouth who allowed Carlisle to gather from the start and some poor defensive tackling saw them to drive through to score the second try which was converted. Cockermouth now seemed to have a mountain to climb, 12-0 and the Carlisle defence had more that dealt with Cockermouth’s offensive drives.
Undaunted and fired up Cockermouth took to the task. Pressure at the re-start forced Carlisle to fumble and Cockermouth gathered the ball from the resulting scrum, moving the ball along the backs. Cockermouth kept the pressure up and strong decisive running from the forward’s forced the Carlisle defensive line back until it broke for Harry Pammenton to score Cockermouth’s first try.
This stirred Cockermouth on and they ran at, driving them back, the pressure beginning to tell on Carlisle as their discipline started to fray. Carlisle started to concede penalties allowing Cockermouth to gain much needed territory. Cockermouth made use of this and forced Carlisle back again through strong running from both the backs and forwards. This resulted in quick ball from a ruck going out to Sam Wilson who drove for the line to score Cockermouth’s second try.
This set the final 10 minutes up for a grandstand finish. It was Cockermouth who took the opportunity as again the Carlisle defence lost its discipline and conceded penalties that allowed Cockermouth to make easy ground and pile pressure on to the Carlisle defence. As Carlisle scrambled to defend, the ball was spun out to Liam McAvoy to sprint past the wing and break through a last ditch tackle to score in the corner.
Cockermouth did not rest there they again went on the offensive and continued to pile the pressure on the Carlisle defence it was only last ditch defensive efforts that denied Cockermouth another try. When the final whistle went, it was Carlisle 12 Cockermouth 15. They had won the County Cup for the first time.
