On Saturday 26th April 2008 Cockermouth travelled to Penrith for the much anticipated County Cup Semi-final for the under 14’s. The weather played its part in that it remained dry but with a strong breeze that favoured no one.
The initial phases of the game were hard and furious with both side tackling furiously and neither side gaining any territorial advantage. The dead lock was finally broken when from a scrum Cockermouth managed to get the ball out along the backs and Liam McAvoy burst through two tackles to score under the posts, it was then converted by Michael Fearon.
This spurred Cockermouth on and there followed period of possession and territory for Cockermouth, but a dogged defence saw Penrith keep them out. The pressure finally told when the Penrith scrum was put under pressure on their 5 metre line, the ball flew out the back uncontrolled and in to the in goal area for Adam Byers to dive on to score the second Cockermouth try.
Penrith made good ground with their possession and drove into the Cockermouth 22 with some quick recycled ball and put the Cockermouth Line under pressure. Penrith were driven over at the try line but some superb tackling by the Cockermouth forwards and backs kept them at bay until Cockermouth were able to turn the ball over and clear it to safety.
Cockermouth went on the attack when Josh Whild took a quick penalty to run from the half way line only to be dragged down on the 5-meter line. From the resulting ruck Kian Spence picked up and drove over in the corner for Cockermouth’s third try.
In the second half both teams were fighting for territory and possession and the game was confined to the middle of the pitch. Cockermouth had the slight edge in territory and possession but were unable to convert it into points due to solid defence from Penrith. The deadlock was finally broken when a poor defensive kick was gathered by Andrew “Chav” Adderson and he ran it back to the Penrith line braking through two tackles to score in the corner.
Penrith never gave up and continually tried to push Cockermouth but the clock was against them and when the final whistle went it was Penrith 0 Cockermouth 22. Both sides are to be congratulated on an entertaining game of rugby that both sets of supporters thoroughly enjoyed. Cockermouth now face Carlisle in the Final, which will be played at Wigton on Sunday 4th May, kick off 11.00am.
