Cockermouth RUFC vs. Ponteland
13th September 2008
The waterlogged pitch from last week had dried a little, but this match took place purely because dedicated club members worked tirelessly to make the pitch playable. This proved to be an extremely useful run out, enabling young players to gain valuable experience playing a team from a higher league. Ponteland proved to be an accomplished outfit, the speed at which they moved the ball wide and released the ball in contact was impressive. It was credit to Cockermouth that they kept the visitors to two unconverted tries by half time.
As the game moved into the last 20minsand with a deficit of only 10 points Cockermouth were still in with a shout. However Ponteland’s athleticism was starting to take its toll on the home team. The visitors went on to score 5 tries, 2 of which were converted, to leave them 39-0 victors. Ponteland had the pace to score from anywhere on the pitch but the commitment by Cockermouth was fantastic. On several occasions Ponteland players had crossed the try line but brilliant defensive work drove them back into the filed of play.
To pick any individual out from the young home side would be unfair, as every single member of the squad gave their all throughout a quick, entertaining game of rugby.
