Cockermouth RUFC vs. Netherhall
11th October2008
Cockermouth 3 - 23 Netherhall
Netherhall brought Cockermouth’s good start to the season to end in this very competitive game. The opening exchanges were pretty even but Netherhall took the lead on 8 minutes with an unconverted try. Cockermouth got back to within two points a few minutes later when some short drives from the forwards lead to Netherhall conceding a penalty. The visitors didn’t react quickly enough to a quick tap by John Taylor and the extra 10 metres got the home side within kicking distance, Ross Maguire stepping up to convert. Netherhall scored another unconverted try to give them a 10 - 5 advantage at half time.
Cockermouth started the second half well and regained some of the form from previous weeks. Ben Swift broke out from the Cockermouth 22 and fed Ross Maguire who duly passed on to youngster Robert Ward, making his first team debut, who sprinted deep into the Netherhall half. Netherhall, who were generally quicker to the breakdown throughout, stole the ball to clear their lines. This was Cockermouth’s best spell of the half but Netherhall’s pace around the park slowly took its toll. Both back rows were outstanding all afternoon, but even the tremendous work by Mark Holmes and Owen David for Cockermouth wasn’t enough to prevent Netherhall going on to score 2 penalties and a converted try giving them a well deserved 23-3 victory.
