Morpeth 10's
The Wasps travelled to Morpeth on Sunday 16th for the North East 10’s Tournament. The U18’s combined with Carlisle and the U15’s, who turned out in their new strip sponsored by Cockermouth Round Table, combined with Durham. The Tournament U18 winners were Tynedale and the U15 winners were Morpeth.
Cockermouth/Carlisle U18’s played some awesome rugby against established, experienced sides such as Tynedale, Morpeth and DMP. Targeted tackling, solid scrums and a never give up attitude kept the scores down, against Tynedale 12 – 0 and Morpeth 22 – 0. Cockermouth won their final match against DMP/Rockcliff 10 – 0 played in the dark, under half lights, so cold you could see every breath the girls took. Captain Clare Condron slipped two tackles and ran three quarters of the pitch to score under the posts. This was followed by Emily Agnew with another under the posts try.
The new U15’s team quickly improved their game as playing time progressed. Tackling improved and after a quick master class following the first game, the scrum consolidated and was no longer pushed off the ball. Although losing to Morpeth 36 – 0 and Rockcliff/Ponteland 10 – 17 the girls were cheered by two tries from Alice Truman and Alex Tranter.
This was an excellent days rugby and a show case for girls rugby from all over the North East representing the clubs and Unions of Northumberland, Durham and Cumbria.
