Cockermouth RUFC vs. Millom
15th November2008
For the second game in a row, Cockermouth gave an excellent account of themselves, making one of the top teams in the league work extremely hard right until the final whistle. The home side were quick to put Millom under pressure and with only 3 minutes on the clock the forwards secured good ball and drove forward. A quick pass to the backs saw Alan Denwood take the ball at pace, forcing his way through would be tacklers. Good following up by the forwards meant the ball the could be quickly recycled to send Brett Malloy on his way to the try line only to be brought down 5 metres short, Owen David was on hand to clean up the loose ball and drive over to score a well taken try to give a 5-0 lead.
On 30 minutes, Millom took advantage of some weak tackling to score a converted try under the posts to give them the lead. This was Millom’s last visit into the Cockermouth half and Cockermouth once again took the initiative and worked tirelessly to put Millom under considerable pressure, doing all the right things, but not quite managing to get the all important score.
The second half started as the first with Cockermouth immediately going on the attack. Andrew Skillen fielded the ball and returned it with interest, following his own kick he put his opposite number under considerable pressure. A penalty soon followed for holding on and a kick to the corner gave Mark Holmes the opportunity to take clean ball. Passing off the top gave Dave Legg the chance to drive for the line but super defending by Millom prevented a certain try.
Cockermouth went on to totally dominate possession and territory for the whole of the second half, but testament to Millom’s defence, they were strong in the tackle and often stole ball to temporarily relieve the relentless pressure. Cockermouth can count themselves really unlucky not to get something out of the game. Once again, they can look to so many positives even in defeat.
