After last weeks high of being 3 matches from Twickenham, Cockermouth came down to earth with a bump! We had 9 players unavailable, including 6 forwards, from the team that travelled, hence many players were asked to play out of position. With 3 props unavailable, Ashley Irving moved from the flank to put in another storming performance.
Keswick have developed a set of backs who have speed in abundance and the capacity to score from anywhere on the pitch. Cockermouth’s cause was not helped by the lack of cohesion due to the numerous changes and hence Keswick were given far too much space to ply their trade and score 11 tries, converting 9 of them. Keswick deserved their win with a powerful display and were the best team we have played against this season.
Things went from bad to worse for Cockermouth when the players discovered that after the match there was no electricity in the clubhouse. The Fire Service had been called out to deal with a small fire caused by an electrical fault. Proceedings after the match had to start in semi- darkness!
It was a shame Keswick couldn’t stay, as they would have probably enjoyed the novelty of “Carols by Candlelight” as the home players decided to make the best of what they had. Thanks must go to Colin Bell, who was one of the first people on the scene to address the problem and prevent a more serious situation arising and also to the Fire Service for their speedy response. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.
