Cockermouth began the game well, fielding the ball from the kick off and then mauling it deep into the Greengarth half putting the visitors under immediate pressure. However apart from one further forage by Ra Thompson and Richard Lindsay Greengarth were never really troubled in the opening quarter. It was only a well taken penalty by Greengarth that stirred Cockermouth into raising their game to play at a much higher intensity.
Cockermouth took a quick strike at a 5-metre scrum and the ball was fed to David Irving who crashed over to give the home side a 5-3 advantage. Greengarth found the increased pace of the game difficult to cope with and after a superb passage of play involving runners taking the ball at pace from controlled rucks, John Walker drove over to score. The conversion by Joe Falk gave Cockermouth a half time lead of 12-3.
In the second half Cockermouth used the wind to good effect with fullback Tom Lindsay and David Irving continually pushing Greengarth deep into their own half with some excellent clearance kicks. Cockermouth’s dominance in the forwards was not weakened when replacements Stefan Highton, Wayne Kavanah and Karl Whild joined the pack and victory was probably assured when Ra Thompson scored a try just after half time, taking the lead to 17-3.
Greengarth never gave up but didn’t make life any easier for themselves when they conceded penalties at crucial times when they were in good attacking positions. Man of the match Ashley Irving and Richard Lindsay in the back row were instrumental in Cockermouth’s dominance as they tackled tirelessly and always made themselves available as runners close to the rucks and mauls. Steven Richardson was on hand to score the fifth try after a superb break by David Irving on 60minutes. Teams at this level need players who are able to play in a variety of positions and Mike Shaw has done exactly that and his willingness to play on the wing was rewarded when he scored a well taken try to make the final score 32-3.
