Greengarth vs. Cockermouth RUFC
13th December 2008
Cockermouth went on their travels with one of the most inexperienced teams of the season, starting their match with only three players over the age of 20. Greengarth, who have been struggling to field a consistent team, benefited from other local teams not having a first team fixture and managed to field a full compliment to make this a very competitive match. Greengarth made the perfect start with a converted try after only four minutes and then again on 13 to give them a 14-0 advantage.
.
Cockermouth did come extremely close to a score after strong running from Ceiron Williams created space for the backs to release Brett Malloy. Stepping inside the covering defence toward the try line Malloy was well tackled just 2 metres out. Cockermouth continued with a good spell of play and were unlucky to concede another converted try on the stroke of half time to leave the score at 21 – 0.
Just after the break Greengarth increased the lead with a penalty and looked as though they were well capable of going on to score further tries, however Cockermouth defended well to keep the score at 24-0. The performance of the half came from Ross Maguire of Cockermouth who had been moved from centre to play on the flank. This was a good experience for the young visitors and a valuable lesson that ball retention is paramount in turning tight games into victories.
