Cockermouth RUFC vs. Creighton
18th April 2009
Here we are at the end of another season, it only seems two minutes since it began! Creighton had the better of the early exchanges, keeping Cockermouth pinned deep in their own half. On 10 minutes Creighton had the opportunity to take the lead but the penalty kick just drifted wide. From the drop out Cockermouth harried Creighton, re-gained possession and drove at the Creighton defence who then had to concede penalties to slow the attack down. Quickly taken penalties pushed Creighton deep into their own half only for them to concede again in front of their posts, Andrew Skillen kicked the penalty to give the home side a 3-0 advantage.
Creighton were unlucky not to score a try when their player was adjudged to have used a double movement to cross the try line. Cockermouth made life difficult for themselves when first up tackles were missed giving Creighton’s pacey backs the opportunity to break away but, playing well as a team, there was always someone on hand to make the next tackle. Creighton had the lion’s share of possession but couldn’t convert the dominance into points. It took until the stroke of half time for Cockermouth to increase the lead. Clean ball was taken in a lineout and released quickly to the backs and an excellent break by Andrew Skillen was brought to a halt on the 22-metre line. Superb backing up by the forwards ensured that the ball was recycled for Richard Nicholson to score in the corner giving Cockermouth an 8-0 half time advantage.
Just after half time Cockermouth made the most of a Creighton sin binning. A scrum near the posts meant a full compliment was needed to prevent the push over, however, this left them short in the backs and Robert Ward took full advantage slicing through a gap to score a well taken try in the corner. A brilliant conversion by Andrew Skillen gave Cockermouth a 15-0 cushion.
It was always going to be tough for Creighton to claw back the deficit, but Cockermouth had upped the anti in the defensive stakes and were now making those first up tackles making the visitor’s task even more difficult. Cockermouth gradually took more control of the game and although didn’t add to the score line, finished with a well deserved, yet hard fought, victory of 15-0.
