Cockermouth had an impressive unbeaten home run of almost 12 months, snatched away from them by a determined BAE Barrow team with a score of 5 points to 6.
The home side elected to play with the strong wind and totally dominated possession and territory throughout the first half, It was only resolute defending and last ditch tackles that prevented Cockermouth from scoring. BAE managed to break into the Cockermouth half on only a handful of occasions and it was on one of these forays that they were awarded a penalty, which was converted to give them a very unexpected half time lead of 3-0.
BAE had defended so well it looked as though they would use the wind to the same degree as Cockermouth had in the first half and put the home side to the sword. However, Cockermouth played like a different team, running the ball at every opportunity from anywhere on the pitch. This put BAE on the back foot and meant territory and possession was much more evenly split than in the first half. This expansive, adventurous approach was rewarded when Ryan Foster charged over to score and give Cockermouth a 5-3 lead. BAE regained the lead through another penalty. As the game wore on the huge BAE pack tired but Cockermouth couldn’t manage to get the winning score they deserved.
A lot of heart can be taken by the second half performance and more of the same will certainly lead to another good run of results.
