Cockermouth went to Aspatria with probably the most inexperienced team we have fielded for many years. The game began at a quick pace, the home side putting Cockermouth under sustained pressure that was defended well. The only scores were the exchange of penalties in the first 8 minutes. It took an exceptional score to break the deadlock when Humes broke from the back of a scrum on 27 minutes, evading several tackles, to score and the conversion gave the home side a 10-3 half time advantage.
Another penalty increased the lead but the introduction of Andrew Reid for Cockermouth raised spirits and a superb forward drive caused Aspatria to pull the maul down, giving Ross McGuire the opportunity to reduce the arrears with his second penalty to make the score 13-6. At this stage the game was in the balance and another exchange of penalties took the score to 16-9. Cockermouth continued to press and a string of quickly taken penalties put the Eagles on the back foot, but the vital score never came and it was the home side who completed the scoring when they broke away and converted a penalty to make the final score 19-9.
The youngsters in the Cockermouth team gave a great account of themselves, in particular the second row pairing of Liam Stevens and Guy Jeffries, who look promising prospects for the future. The match was played in tremendous spirit and both teams should be commended for their part in a very entertaining game.
