Brian White – Youth Coach & Fixture Coordinator
Youth Rugby at Clacton was reintroduced in 2004, and I am pleased to report that last year was our most successful. I don’t think it will be long before some of the boys will be looking for a place in the adult sides.
There has been a considerable interest in rugby over the past few years, and last season we were able to field teams at Under 15, Under 13 and Under 12 levels. The Under 15’s developed into quite a useful outfit, and we are looking for them to continue as an Under 16 team for the coming season. The other two sets are obviously a year older as well, and again we will be looking to get them as many Sunday fixtures at the appropriate level as possible. The perennial problem is that of finding fixtures, but it is a problem that I am constantly working on.
In addition, we are keen to extend our Sunday morning training to the mini’s – 7-year olds through to 10-year olds – thus giving us the potential to play other clubs as a mini’s block. I will be working with Alex Barbour in this section, but we need at least two other coaches. Keen parents will be fine, and no previous experience is necessary although, of course, we will follow the relevant child welfare procedures.
The Tuesday evening training sessions are usually very well attended, and we welcome anyone aged 11 upwards. However, this start date has to remain flexible, especially during the winter months when we are governed by the floodlit training space available. Dave Green and Jake Buxey will lead on the Under 16 coaching, with Dave Hitchin running the Under 13’s. Further assistance is always appreciated, but the sight of the floodlit second pitch covered with youth team players on a Tuesday night is quite rewarding.
We are fully committed to running the youth sides, and I am appreciative of the work done by Pete Watts, the head of the Youth Committee. We are also fortunate in having Alex Barbour as our schools link. As well as liaising with the secondary schools in the area, Alex regularly goes into many of the local primary schools to take tag-rugby classes, and organised a schools tournament for local schools last December. All this work is invaluable if we want rugby to continue in Clacton.
I am also grateful to our club president, Tony Cook. At Clacton, when anyone asks ‘What exactly does a club president do?’ my answer is ‘He referees our youth matches!’ Everyone acknowledges that you can’t have a rugby match without a referee, and Tony has regularly given up his Sunday mornings to help us out.
With the increase in numbers of young players wanting to play rugby, I am looking to expand the size of the Youth Committee.
