Camborne R.F.C. awarded “The Tommy May” trophy from Cornwall Referee’s Society.
Alan Truscott, C.R.F.C. Chairman, was delighted to accept this award at the Lowenac Hotel, Camborne recently on behalf of the club. This trophy is awarded annually to the rugby club, voted by the referees, which during the year regularly satisfies certain criteria regarding “hospitality” towards visiting match officials. These criteria include pre-match contact, pre-match reception, ground preparation and club facilities, post match reception and general comments regarding attitude shown by the club to the referee on match days. Ian Hamilton, president of the Cornwall Rugby Referee’s Society said, “Congratulations to Camborne on winning this year’s award which was thoroughly deserved”.

The baby Flying Fijian just turned 19, still very shy but he can hold a conversation; he's been to Vanuabalavu in the Lau Group where his father traces ancestry but Cornwell is home.
His selection did raise the ire of some, from commentators to armchair rugby strategists. A few mistakes in the Scotland match did not help his case.
Josh Matavesi may not speak the language fluently but for someone to chose Fiji after already having a foot into the English national representation pool, he couldn't have been more eloquent in communicating his commitment to the island nation.
"It's more about what felt right at the time. When Mike (technical director Brewer) asked me it just felt right, I haven't regretted it and no, I don't think I will. I'm really glad I chose Fiji," he told Fiji Times on Friday.
Matavesi does not deny that another two million people want to play rugby in England.
His candour is fresh.
"I'm thinking if I get injured next week, at least I can say I played for Fiji , that I've done something with my rugby," Matavesi said.
"You could be waiting around your whole career and it might never come and then you might get injured next week and you never be able to say I never played for my country.
"Now with this opportunity, I can gain a lot more knowledge and experience playing for Fiji and having 65 caps for Fiji rather than one cap for England."
Matavesi's parents, Sireli and Karen met through rugby when his father toured the United Kingdom as a Fiji Barbarian in 1987. Cornwell's Camborne Rugby Club called Matavesi and offered him a contract; the rest as they say, is history.
Camborne is where Josh also started his rugby. Last summer, he moved to Exeter after scoring a contract that he says has been "a great job".
'I definitely have a lot more to learn," he says quietly when reminded of the Scotland game.
'I was really nervous in the Scotland game and made some mistakes but they were my first and hopefully the last. It's when things like that happen, you really feel rotten about but they will never happen again."
The fact that he's part of the Fiji team hasn't really hit home yet. But his lopsided grin implies he's sticking to the Fiji jersey; he's quick to acknowledge other players who have World Cup ambitions.
For now, he's simply playing sponge for rugby know-how both from other players and coaches. He is especially stoked to be spending time with Fiji veteran Nicky Little, whom he's always admired and continues to use as a reference point, for his own rugby career.
"I remember watching him when I was nine years old. I've always looked up to him and always wanted to be like him and now I am playing and training with him, it's kind of weird," the Exeter fullback said.
'He's teaching me so many things about rugby and his position is the position I want to eventually play in the end so it's been a real boost for my development I want to follow his footsteps."

Cherry & Whites last gasp victory secures the title
Wadebridge Camels 10 - 12 Camborne RFC
Joe Parma kept his cool to slot over his first ever drop goal 14 minutes into added time to give Town victory in this fiercly contested top of the table Cornish derby clash at Molesworth field. This was without doubt the game of the season in the Western Counties league and lived up to everyones expectations as no quarter was asked or given. Both sides went out and gave 100% leaving the coaches and spectators proud of their respective teams in this war of attrition in superb weather at Wadebridge.
Town were in front for most of the match from taking an early lead with just 3 minutes on the clock through the boot of stand in fly half Shane Woods. Wadebridge threw everything into attack but could not breach the superbly marshaled Camborne defence and rarely threatened the visitors try line. This game had everything from some superb handling moves, a disalowed try and 3 sin binings, to 15 minutes of nailbiting injury time in which the lead changed hands twice in a desperate final 3 minutes.
At half time the Cherry and Whites led by 6 - 0 from two Woods penalty's but within 5 minutes of the restart were reduced to 14 players when Tom Hinds received a yellow card for killing the ball. The Camels took full advantage of this and within a few minutes took the lead from a maul when the ball was slipped to wing Hawkey who appeared to run into his own man prior to grounding the ball, the conversion went over from a wide angle to give the Camels a 7 - 6 advantage. The home side joy was short lived as an off the ball incident after the try had been scored resulted in a yellow card for Ben Collings leaving both teams a man short.
Town then went on the offensive and put the pressure on the home defence keeping them pinned inside their half, a superb 30 yard break by Joe Parma weaving through four Wadebridge tacklers was halted just a few feet from the line. Now in the opposition 22 Town were determined not to come away without scoring and after a few more passages of play forced the defence into killing the ball and give away a panalty 25 yards out which Woods slotted to give them a 9 - 7. With both teams restored to full strength the game went from end to end but Town were gradually getting on top and once again pressure told and with 20 minutes remaining another off the ball incident saw home center Tom Prout receive a yellow card. This left Woods with a simple kick just 20 yards out right infront of the posts, with tension building and nerves on edge the young fly half scuffed his kick pulling it to the left of the posts.
This gave the Camels renewed hope and they put everything into the next 10 minutes to try and get the win they so badly needed, but when plan A did'nt work for them there was no plan B and Town certainly had plan A covered. With time running out as quickly as the Camels ideas and stamina, the Cherry & Whites surged forward and spent 10 minutes camped on the home sides line. The Wadebridge defence was superb and wave after wave of Town attacks were halted, until just into injury time when it appeared Camborne made the breakthrough with replacement prop Mark Tonkin being driven over in the corner. The referee signaled held up over the line which seemed to be an incorrect decision, but the honest player later confirmed there was a Wadebridge leg under the ball so well done ref. With injury time ticking away the Cherry & Whites kept hammering at the the line but Wadebridge eventually turned over the ball to break away and get into the Town 22, where it was Camborne's turn to be penalised for holding on. So 12 minutes into injury time Luke Davidson stood just 20 yards out with a chance to slot over the winning kick and take Wadebridge to the top of the league, this he did with ease and the ground erupted into jubilation.
That was surly it the ref must now blow his whistle and break Town's hearts, but he did'nt, he allowed Camborne to kick off and the Camels took the ball and a sliced clearence gave the Cherry & Whites a lineout 25 yards from the line. Goldsworthy took a superb catch and Town were on the drive keeping the ball alive and moving towards the posts with players lined up either side. With only Pascoe and Parma aware of the drop goal play, the Camels did not anticipate this and were slow to charge down, but the coolist player on the field knew exactly what to do as he slotted a perfect drop goal disecting the uprights. It was now the Cherry & Whites turn to celebrate and the 100+ supporters who had made the trip were in extasy as they celebrated what must now be the winning score. Referee Darren Curry still had 1 minute to play on his watch so the game restarted and the Camels managed to get their hands on the ball for one final play. As the Camels drove at the Town defence Laurie Manna put in a solid challenge dislodging the ball for Camborne to gather and kick into touch for the final whistle to sound.
The boys from the Back Row celebrate
This was Town's 23rd victory and 10th double of the season with 9 wins and 1 draw against fellow Cornish sides in the league, not bad for a team which narrowly escaped relegation last season. Captain Dave Roberts has expressed his and the teams thanks for the support the side have had this season, it's gives you a big lift when you walk out at an away ground and your supporters outnumber the home team. Today for instance we were nervious in the changing room, but as soon as we came out the reception we received was amazing and this was a big boost for the side and it's been like that all season.
Penryn RFC 6 - 16 Camborne
Camborne complete the double over the Borough to stay clear at theTop
A try in each half from Tom Notman and Jon Griffiths plus two Mankee penalty's proved enough to take the points in this keenly contested local derby match.
Parma skips through the Penryn defence Randlesome gets a yellow
Camborne maintained their lead at the top of Western Counties West with a hard fought Cornish derby win at mid table Penryn.
Centres Laurie Manna and Tom Hinds had good games for the Cherry & Whites as did hard working wing Cameron Bone and skipper Dave Roberts.
The visitors were first onto the scoreboard in the 15th minute when David Mankee landed a 35 metre penalty after Penryn strayed offside.
Soon after the home side were reduced to 14 men with a sinbinning and ‘Town’ capitalised with the opening try of the game. Fly half Mankee booted a penalty to touch close in from where the forwards secured line out ball and drove for the line for lock Jon Griffiths to touch down for a 0-8 score line.
Penryn hit back minutes later with fly half Rob Banks on target with a penalty to reduce the deficit to only five points at the break.
Early in the 2nd half good work in midfield by Bone set up a position from where the ball was worked swiftly along to line for wing Tom Notman to go over.
Again the home side came back swiftly with Banks slotting a 2nd penalty to make the score 6-13.
Camborne then created several try scoring chances with Roberts breaking the line with several of his trademark charges but failed to capitalise in the face of some determined home defence.
Inside the last quarter Mankee was on target with a penalty to establish a crucial two scores clear cushion and from there the game ran to its conclusion without any further points for either side.

Camborne 49 - 0 Newquay Hornets
Town give one of their best performances of the season to defeat the Hornets
Camborne reinforced their position at the top of the Western Counties league with a seven try demolition of the Hornets at the Recreation Ground.
An injury in the warm up saw centre Tom Hinds withdraw to be replaced by Christian Barbagallo and the youngster did not let the Cherry & Whites down. Outstanding in a fine team performance for the home side on the day were skipper Dave Roberts, stalwart forwards Martin Woolcock and Ryan Smith plus livewire wing Tom Notman.
As early as the 4th minute ‘Town’ were in front when scrum half Dean Pascoe made a half break and off loaded to David Mankee who skipped through the cover to touch down a try that he also converted.
Newquay to their credit then withstood the onslaught for the remainder of the 1st quarter but slipped further behind on 24 minutes when fly half Mankee bagged his 2nd try after great approach work by James Rapson which he again converted well.
As the interval neared full back Rapson showed his strength to stretch over following a lovely inside pass from lock John Griffiths. Sadly he injured a shoulder in the act of touching down leaving the field before Mankee converted with an excellent kick for a 21-0 score line.
Early in the 2nd half Camborne went out of sight with an unstoppable forward surge from a lineout catch and drive ending with the first of a brace of tries for No 8 Roberts. Mankee added the extras with another well judged kick.
On the hour a period of incessant pressure involving interpassing between Cherry & White forwards and backs gave right wing Cameron Bone the opportunity to stroll over near the posts with Mankee again converting.
Minutes later good work by Bone on the flank brought a position from where the home pack again drove for the line with replacement flanker James Goldsworthy on hand to touch down. Mankee’s well judged conversion made the score 42-0.
Near the end Roberts went over for his 2nd try storming through the overworked visiting defence leaving Mankee to knock over his 7th successive conversion to finish with an impressive 24 point personal tally. The only downside for Town was the injury sustained by Rapson, the dislocation was the second the player has suffered in the last three weeks and this time it was the left shoulder which took the impact. He is likely to be out of action for up to 4 weeks and so will probably miss the League and Cup double header in a fortnight.

Minehead Barbarians 5 - 20 Camborne
Understrength Town made to work hard for the victory,
Late withdrawals and injuries gave league debuts to four players for Town at Minehead today, Christian Barbagallo, Jonathan Cook, Martin Goldsworthy and Sean Oates all made first appearances of the season. Camborne had to reshuffle almost it's entire backline for their trip to Somerset, with some players out of position and new untested partnerships being tried.
Late changes included, Adam Notman (Back) Tom Hinds (Hamstring) Shane Woods (leg) David Mankee (work) & James Goldsworthy (hip) all of whom joined previous casualties Joe Parma (hamstring) Ryan Spargo (knee) James Rapson (shoulder) Robert Floyd (knee) & Andrew Smith (neck). This is without doubt one of the worst injury lists ever to have hit the Cherry & Whites and it shows what tremendous Character, Determination, Team Spirit and Will to Win there is at the club to still be riding high at the top of the league.
Today's line up included Sam Matavesi (flanker) playing at centre, Laurie Manna (centre) playing at fly half Tom Notman (wing) at full back for the second week in a row and Christian Barbagallo (scrum half) at centre. Despite a promising start Town found themselves 5 points down after 20 minutes following a Minehead break from their own 22 with the left wing touching down in the corner. Camborne levelled on the half hour after well worked forward pressure led to a try for the Cherry & Whites Captain and man of the match David Roberts, Matavesi missed the conversion.

Early pressure from Town The scrum which led to the first Try
With Town finding handling moves breaking down due to the lack of cohesion between the new partnerships, they changed tactics in the second half, when a more forward orientated game was introduced. This payed dividends straight away with the home side being put on the back foot and Town dominating possession and territory, which lead to a push over try for Bartle in the 51st minute. Now the Cherry & Whites had the upper hand and were constantly pressurising the Barbarians who were relying on scraps to create chances, and to their credit they did have several promising moves which were repelled by the staunch Town defence. It was only a matter of time before Camborne got their 3rd score and this came curtisy of another driven over try for Bartle just after the hour, the convertion was again missed leaving the score at 5 - 15.
The victory was ensured when David Roberts was (you guessed it) driven over near the corner flag with just under 10 minutes remaining. Both sides had chances to score after this, Minehead having one of there best spells of possession in the match keeping Town pinned in their own half for several minutes. But Town stood firm and were resolute in defence determind not to conceed again, as they broke free to almost score at the death with just a knock on ending the move.
There were several players who had outstanding games today, Dave Roberts (2 tries) who's breaks from the base of the scrum were to numerious to mension, Scott Macdonald who made the hard yards and recycled a lot of good ball, Jon Griffiths who was a constant thorn in Mineheads side, Sean Oates who rolled back the years and tackled everything that moved, Johnny Cook who made several good runs through the opposition, Sam Bartle (2 tries) who was everywhere from running back kick off's to winning loose ball on the deck and Cameron Bone who took on the kicking from hand role and also made a lot of yardage with his hard running.

Camborne 13 - 5 Kingsbridge
Town ease past Kingsbridge to go 3 points clear,
The Cherry & Whites held the upper hand for most of this top of the table encounter as Kingsbridge huffed and Puffed and worked doggidly but never really posed a serious threat to Camborne. The visitors only score came whilst Town were down to 13 players with lock Griffiths and Fly half Mankee in the sin bin, and even that was a controvertial effort with what looked like two forward passes in the move that led to it.
The afternoon did not start well for Camborne when Joe Parma, who was due to play his first game for 6 weeks pulled up in the warm up with a tweaked hamstring. This is not felt to be a serious injury setback, but today may have been slightly too soon for his comeback so he will be assessed in the week before a decision is made about his return. So with 7 try Parma and 8 try Spargo missing before kick off Town knew they would have to be on top of their game to win against the only unbeaten side in the league.
The Cherry & Whites dug deep and put in some superb big hits to deny their Devon visitors the chance to build up any momentum and create any real clear cut chances. It shows the character of the side that despite the building injury list, the pressure, conditions and the opposition they still won such a vital encounter without ever looking in danger of defeat.
Report,
Camborne deservedly triumphed in this top of the table clash taking Kingsbridge’s unbeaten Western Counties record in the process.
“Town” suffered an unfortunate start as full back Joe Parma was forced to withdraw following a reoccurrence of his hamstring injury during the final warm up.
After a quick reshuffle the Cherry & Whites went on to give a wholehearted and committed team performance in atrocious conditions.
In particular there were huge games in Camborne’s cause from no 8 Dave Roberts, lock John Griffiths and dogged scrum half Dean Pascoe.
Playing down the slope the home side were on the backfoot for most of the 1st quarter but went ahead when David Mankee knocked over a 17 minute well judged penalty from 35 metres. Soon after Pascoe astutely chipped over the visitors backs for Mankee to run onto the kick, back on and dive on the ball over the goal line. Mankee’s conversion from near the posts gave his team an important 10 point lead.
Briefly Camborne were reduced to 13 players with Griffiths and Mankee sinbinned and Kingsbridge capitalised with an unconverted try.
With the rain relenting in the 2nd period fly half Mankee booted a 48 minute penalty to put the Cherry&Whites a critical two scores in front.

Superb home tackling then kept the visitors at a comfortable distance as much of the remainder of the game was played out in the middle 3rd of the field.
Near the end Mankee saw a kickable penalty sail wide but Camborne were not to be denied a victory that could be significant come the season’s end.

Kingsbridge RFC 0 - 19 Camborne (Devon v Cornwall Final)
Camborne not only became the first team to beat Kingsbridge this season but also stopped them scoring in the process as they advance to the last 16 of the Intermediate Cup.
The cherry & Whites travelled to this fixture with their top 3 points scorers (who have contributed 211 points between them) missing which makes the victory that much more special. It shows the strength in depth this young Camborne team have and will give the side a huge confidence boost ahead of the home league fixture between the teams in 2 weeks.
Hinds & Woods make a break Try scorer Notman on the burst Roberts & the Notmans stop the run
Kingsbridge knew they were in for a tough afternoon at the first scrum when their pack was driven backwards as Town's dominant forwards showed they were up for the challange. Camborne went ahead after 10 minutes when stand in Full Back Tom Notman (switching positions do to a reshuffle in the backs with Mankee dropping out) made a superb run from deep, breaking four tackles to score near the posts. Shane Woods who took over Mankee's place at Fly Half also took on the kicking responsibilities and landed the conversion to make it 0 - 7.
The Cherry & Whites put in a workmanlike performance giving little chance for the home team to create anything and were rewarded for their efforts with a second try on the hour. The score went to centre Laurie Manna who rounded off a good handling move showing the home defence a clean pair of heels as he sprinted in, Woods again added the extra's for a 0 - 14 scoreline.
With eight minutes to go Town got their 3rd try when a move which started in their own 22 was finished off out wide by Adam Notman (brother of Tom), the convertion was missed leaving the score at 0 - 19. Kingsbridge's best effort came when the home forwards drove over the line but the referee was unsighted and judged the ball to be held up.
Shane Woods hits a conversion Laurie Manna races over for the 2nd Goldsworthy barges through
The only downside to this excellent victory for the Cherry & Whites was an injury to Scrum Half James Rapson who fell and jarred his shoulder on the rock hard pitch. This adds to Town's growing injury list but after an away performance like this the confidence in the squad is so high that it will take more than a few injuries to stop the Cherry & White juggernaut's progress this season.

Withycombe 7 - 37 Camborne
The Cherry & Whites comprehensive victory ensures top spot over Christmas & New Year.
Camborne's combined a workman like performance in the the first half with a blistering final quarter to master the conditions and home side in this Devon v Cornwall encounter. Town ran in 5 tries to take their tally to the season to 64 in 15 matches as they continue to entertain supporters with their attacking, free flowing style of play which coach Steve Larkins has instilled in the side.
Has anyone seen this man's Yak?
report;
Camborne ensured they ended 2009 at the top of Western Counties with a convincing win in Devon.
With leaders Kingsbridge game off due to bad weather this game went ahead on a firm playing surface on a bitterly cold afternoon.
For ‘Town’ Mark Tonkin came in for a 1st start of the season at hooker and did not let the side down. Skipper Dave Roberts made a number of his trademark charges and prop Scott Macdonald and full back James Rapson shone in a fine all round team performance.
The visitors built up a 6-0 lead inside the 1st quarter with fly half David Mankee landing a brace of routine penalties.
A strike against the head by Tonkin set up a counter attacking opportunity with scrum half Dean Pascoe and Mankee combining on the blindside to set wing Shane Woods free on the left flank with the youngster duly obliging with the corner try. After receiving a blow to the head in the move which led to the try prop Leigh Hocking, who had already been treated for an ankle injury was then replaced by Nigel Endean on 35 minutes.
Lee Hocking polaxed in the background Town on one of their many driving mauls
Leading by eleven points at the break the Cherry & Whites soon extended their advantage early in the 2nd half. From a training ground move at a lineout Roberts burst clean through on a 25 metre run to the goal line to make the score 0-16.
With Town down to 14 players after a yellow card for Pascoe, basement side Withycombe hit back to their credit with their forwards touching down a pushover try well converted from a difficult angle.
Going into the final quarter Camborne ran in a 3rd try to put themselves firmly in control. A close range penalty was taken quickly for the pack to drive for the line and Macdonald was on hand to barge over near the posts. With the straightforward conversion Mankee made the score 7-23.
In the closing stages as the home pack tired the visitors went up a gear to run in two further tries. First a sweeping long range handling move involving Rapson, centre Laurie Manna and Mankee created space for right wing Cameron Bone to race over. Mankee was on target with a well judged conversion.
On the final whistle Pascoe darted through the middle of a line out 30 metres from the home line and replacement flanker Sam Matavesi was on hand to take the scoring pass and go over with Mankee’s conversion completing a resounding victory. To their credit Withycombe never stopped trying and gave everything they had for the whole 80+ minutes, which made the margin of victory so much more satisfying for Town knowing they had to earn every point.
If there were a man of the match award for Town it would have gone to the whole team as everyone played their part well in this victory. However a few players had exceptional games including centres Laurie Manna & Tom Hinds who put so much pressure on the opposition they had to resort to kicking most of their posession away. Also the whole front row including replacement Nigel Endean who not only scrumaged well all match but also took the game to the opposition at every opportunity and put in some big hits, and once again David Roberts led by example.

Camborne 43 - 10 Bude RFC
Notman bags 4 tries as Town cut loose in the second half to down Bude
Cherry & Whites wing Tom Notman gave an excellent performance scoring 2 tries in each half to deservidly pick up the man of the match trophy in Town's victory over a determined Bude side at the Recreation Ground this afternoon. This was another very good team effort by Camborne against a Bude team that never gave up defensively and ran the ball at every oppertunity.

Notman celebrates his 4th Try Scoring his second, a good solo effort
Camborne ran in six tries for an emphatic victory in their last home Western Counties game of 2009 to keep up the pressure on leaders Kingsbridge.
It was a glorious winters afternoon that young left wing Tom Notman will have cause to remember as the Colts flyer finished the game with four tries to his name.
For ‘Town’ lock Ryan Smith returned after several weeks out whilst Martin Woolcock started in the backrow. Cameron Bone came into the starting line up and did well on the right flank with Shane Woods filling the No 15 jersey.
Once again there were big games upfront from lock Jon Griffiths, prop Scott Macdonald and skipper David Roberts whilst centre Tom Hinds’ running was a handful particularly in the 1st half.

Tom Hinds on the burst replacement Lee Hocking making an impact Cameron Bone makes a break
The Cherry & Whites made a dream start putting together phases of attack from the kick off that ended with a rare try for loose head Nigel Endean. David Mankee converted with a well judged kick for 7-0.
Bude were lively in the opening quarter soon levelling at 7-7 but on 13 minutes after a searing Hinds break Notman bagged his opening try doing well to squeeze over in the corner.
Midway through the half the youngster raced from deep up the left touchline before finally being held near the Bude line. From the ensuing pressure the ball was worked left again for Notman to go over for his brace. Fly half Mankee converted with another excellent kick to make the score 19-7.
Before half time the visitors reduced the arrears with a close range penalty but soon after the interval Mankee cancelled those 3 points out with his own effort from in front of the posts.
A period of sustained pressure then saw Notman complete his hat trick with a 48th minute individual effort cutting inside from the flank to cross near the posts. Mankee’s straightforward conversion put his side almost out of sight at 29-10.
Ryan Spargo drives through the Bude defence Robbo makes one of his trade mark runs
On the hour more slick Camborne handling involving Bone and Mankee created another opportunity for Notman and the teenager duly went over for his 4th touchdown which was again well converted by Mankee.
Almost immediately Town’s pack got back in on the try scoring act driving for the line from a lineout close in for flanker Ryan Spargo to touchdown. Mankee knocked over his 5th conversion of the game taking the score to 43-10.
Near the end the visitors’ misery was compounded with the sending off of hooker Dave Risdon for a head-butt on Dean Pascoe.
Camborne now look forward to hosting the traditional Boxing Day clash with local rivals Redruth with a 2.30pm kick off.

Camborne 36 - 0 Tiverton RFC
Town keep a clean sheet as they ease past Tivvi in the gloom.
The Cherry Whites took their wins tally at the Rec this season to 8 as they kept their 100% home record in the ever worsening conditions this afternoon. In a match which almost got abandoned mid-way through the second half due to bad light Town ran in 6 unanswered tries through Matavesi 2, Manna, Roberts, Parma and Notman. This result keeps Camborne top of the table and with Kingsbridge just pipping Penryn 11 - 7 also increases the Cherry & Whites already superior points difference.
There were some very good performances right through the side today, Jon Griffiths put in a lot of work and was always a thorn in Tivvy's side and Matavesi was his usual all action self, picking up 2 deserved tries. But for his all round handling game, (in poor conditions) line out work (taking a lot of Tivvi ball) and attitude the man of the match award went to lock James Goldsworthy. In his first season playing senior rugby for Town this 18's game is improving week on week, which is due in no small part to the help and guidence he has received from fellow lock Jon Griffiths.
Camborne remain top of Western Counties on points difference following a convincing win in horrendous conditions at the Recreation Ground.
With persistent rain falling throughout ‘Town’ gave a wholehearted display with scrum half Dean Pascoe, No 8 David Roberts plus locks Jon Griffiths and young James Goldsworthy particularly prominent.
After a scrappy opening quarter the home side took a deserved 24th minute lead. Pascoe gained good field position with an astute kick and from the ensuing catch and drive flanker Sam Matavesi emerged from under the pile of bodies after the impressive forward surge to claim a try. David Mankee converted with a well judged kick for 7-0.
Before half time the stubborn Tiverton defence was breached for the 2nd time. Skipper Roberts picked up from a close range scrum to send full back Joe Parma sliding over on the blindside to score in the turnstile corner.
With conditions deteriorating further in the 2nd half playing down the slope the Cherry & Whites pinned the Devon side in their own territory for long periods.
On the hour strong runs by Roberts and centre Tom Hinds gained good ground before the ball was worked swiftly left for centre Laurie Manna to go over wide out. Fly half Mankee converted majestically from the touchline for an emphatic 19-0 scoreline.
Now going up a gear in search of more points Camborne piled on the pressure. With a little over 10 minutes remaining the hardworking Roberts got a deserved touchdown powering through midfield to score at the posts with Mankee knocking over the simple conversion.
On 76 minutes Matavesi dotted down a carbon copy of his earlier try with the forward surge unstoppable from fully 20 metres out.
Near the end the Cherry & Whites bagged their 6th touchdown of a satisfying day at the office when young left wing Tom Notman did well to squeeze over in the corner.

Camborne 27 - 3 Penryn RFC
The Cherry & Whites have to much fire power for the Borough,
Even though Town threw away a few excellent try scoring opportunities they still comfortably beat Penryn with something to spare.
This was a very good all round team performance from Camborne both in attack and defence but it must be said the 15 - 0 half time score could have been doubled if the finishing had been more clinical.
The game was however was not a one sided contest with the Borough mounting several usful attackes, most of which stemmed from full back Chris Mann, which left Town defending resoultely close to the line on a few occasions. The determined way Camborne held their opponents up just short of the try line was very heartening indeed and showed a great deal of commitment from the Cherry & Whites.
The home team certainly had more will to win than the visitors, nothing proved this more than Penryn's decision to kick for goal from a penalty given just 15 mtrs out with the scores at 20 - 0 and 25 minutes still remaining.
The Man of the Match award went to Captain David Roberts for an outstanding all round performance, but once again there were a few other players who could have picked up the trophy, none more so than centre Tom Hinds who had one of his best matches for the Cherry & Whites making several excellent breaks and putting in some superb tackles.
Match Report
Camborne’s cutting edge behind the scrum proved decisive as they ran in four tries to comprehensively defeat Penryn in this local derby clash.
Lacking John Griffiths upfront the home side reshuffled their pack recalling experienced props Scott Macdonald and Nigel Endean to their starting line up.
For the Cherry & Whites skipper David Roberts had a huge game at number 8 deservedly taking the man of the match accolades with the industrious Macdonald and centre Tom Hinds not far behind in a fine team performance.
Three times in the first half only good one on one tackles by Borough full back Chris Mann prevented tries and when the home line came under heavy pressure once in each period of the game resolute defence from the pack kept the goal line intact.
In tricky conditions the visitors had the 1st opportunity to put points on the board but Taron Peacock saw a 6th minute penalty hit a post.
Fit again David Mankee then opened the scoring for ‘Town’ on 16 minutes landing a monster penalty shot from near the halfway line.
On the half hour a Mankee penalty punt to the corner brought Camborne good field positon and when the forward surge from the lineout catch and drive was halted Hinds took a short pass to power over for an 8-0 lead.
After Mann’s heroics, as the interval neared the Cherry & Whites put together a slick handling move involving Roberts, Macdonald, Hinds and Laurie Manna ending with lively Colt’s wing Tom Notman cutting inside to go over for a deserved 1st Senior try. Fly half Mankee’s well judged conversion made the interval scoreline 15-0.
Early in the 2nd half the impressive Hinds broke through the visiting defence releasing centre Manna who’s well timed pass left to Shane Woods allowed the winger to scorch over for a well worked try leaving ‘Town’ 20 points up and almost out of sight.
Penryn to their credit then came much more into the game enjoying a good spell of territory and possession that was finally rewarded with a 64th minute penalty from scrum half Peacock.
Late on as conditions deteriorated further Manna breached the overworked visiting cover to set up an opportunity for pacy full back Joe Parma to race clear from 30 metres for the final try with Woods adding the extras to seal victory.

Camborne 34 - 0 Minehead Barbarians
Camborne bounced back from last week’s Western Counties reverse to run out convincing winners in a one sided encounter in the Recreation Ground sunshine.
For ‘Town’ youngsters scrum half James Rapson, prop Nathan Curnow and lock James Goldsworthy all earned recalls to the starting line up.
Playing down the slope the home side dominated the early exchanges and went in front with an 8th minute angled drop goal from David Mankee.
Still inside the 1st quarter a penalty punt for position in the scoreboard corner saw the forwards drive for the line and flanker Sam Matavesi touching down an unconverted try.
On the half hour skipper David Roberts picked up from the base of a scrum deep in the visitors half and burst clear on a 15 metre run to line. Fly half Mankee’s conversion attempt came back off a post and half time arrived at 13-0.

Early in the 2nd period Rapson launched an attack from deep trading passes with right wing Rob Floyd before touching down the best try of the afternoon. Mankee added the extras with a well judged kick.
Soon after more sustained Cherry & White forward pressure saw Curnow claim a try under a pile of bodies which Mankee converted from a wide angle for an emphatic 27-0 scoreline.
On the hour No 8 Roberts improved the score further storming over for his 2nd try of the day with Mankee converting.
The two sides then played out a disappointing final quarter and ‘Town’ will reflect on a number of scoring opportunities that went begging throughout the game preventing a win by a much bigger margin.

Newquay Hornets 20
Camborne 52
Camborne produced some superb bouts of handling to remain in 2nd place in Western Counties by comprehensively defeating the Hornets at the Sports Centre.
The Cherry & Whites saw three players limp off to finish the final quarter with only twelve men preventing victory by an even bigger margin.
Man of the match Joe Parma started the rout as early as the 5th minute as he jinked his way over from Tom Hinds’ neat switch pass for David Mankee to convert.
The home side managed a 15th minute penalty but midway through the half right wing Rob Floyd went racing down the flank before cutting inside to touchdown with Mankee converting for 3-14.
Soon after ‘Town’ gained good field position and from an attacking scrum fifteen metres out powerful No 8 Dave Roberts picked up to charge over through he would be tacklers.
On twenty six minutes the outstanding Parma launched another wave of attack that ended with Floyd completing his brace under the posts. Fly half Mankee’s simple conversion made the score 3-26.
Another superb Floyd run saw him injured in the desperate Newquay tackle with Dean Pascoe coming on as replacement and from their only spell of 1st half pressure the Hornets bagged a converted try for a flattering 10-26 interval scoreline.
In the 3rd quarter the Cherry & Whites put together some exceptional rugby to go out of sight notching three tries in a six minute purple patch. First to cross was scrum half James Rapson darting down the blindside after another Parma thrust was halted. Next Parma and skipper Roberts swapped passes in a sixty metre counter attack that saw Parma clean through to bag a deserved 2nd try. Mankee converted both of these but could not add the extras to a 59th minute try from young flanker James Goldsworthy who bulldozed his way to the line.
Coach Steve Larkins then threw on his remaining replacements moments before Mankee was forced to retire after a lengthy stoppage. Lock Ryan Smith was soon forced off as the home side grabbed a try for 15-45.
Now down to only thirteen players ‘Town’ surged back up field regardless with the impressive Hinds charging over in the 66th minute to bring up the half century of points with Pascoe slotting the conversion.
Centre Laurie Manna then sustained an injury in the closing stages and a depleted Camborne conceded a late try to bring some consolation for Newquay.

Bude's report on the game,
CAMBORNE 43 BUDE 10
With the pre-Christmas party season seemingly in full swing, Bude had very little to cheer them at the Recreation Ground last Saturday, as they were put to the sword in the second half by a rampant Camborne side, chasing hard on the heels of league leaders Kingsbridge, with left wing Tom Notman bagging a double brace of tries into the bargain. To compound their misery the Seasiders had hooker Dave Risdon sent off at the final whistle, following an altercation on the ground with Town’s replacement scrum half Dean Pascoe.
After the mud and rain of the previous few weeks, it was a pleasure to arrive in “mining country” to find the Recreation Ground in excellent condition, on a crisp and sunny afternoon, with a good crowd anticipating a spirited match, having escaped the scrum of present shopping on the high street.
From the opening exchanges it was clear that both sides were keen to run the ball, although ironically the first score came courtesy of Camborne prop Nigel Endean from a close range, after a sweeping three quarter move had been halted metres short of the line. Fly half David Mankee converted from wide out and straight away the visitors knew their defence would have to on its mettle to contain the lively home attack. However, within a further two minutes Bude were level as right wing Matt Trewin collected a superbly weighted cross-field kick from fly half Andy Yates, stepped his opposite number and sped in from 30 metres and then converted his touchdown from in front of the uprights.
12 minutes in and Town were back in front as Notman crossed for the first of his quartet of tries, following good work by No 8 David Roberts, but this time Mankee’s conversion attempt was off target. However, seven minutes later Notman was on the scoresheet again, this time an excellent individual effort from long distance, following a defensive scrum in Camborne’s own 22, with Mankee adding the extras to take his side 19-7 ahead. It was fast and furious stuff, with both sides enjoying the conditions and with the game barely into the second quarter Trewin reduced the deficit to nine points as he slotted over his second successful kick, following a penalty for offside at the breakdown. Bude were now right back in the game and six minutes later Trewin had a chance to close the margin to one score with a penalty attempt from 30 metres out, after a dangerous tackle on tighthead prop Barry Sobey, as the visitors’ pack drove into the “red” zone, but unfortunately his kick slid past the posts.
Finally, the pace began to slow as both sides took stock, with, it has to be admitted, some pretty indifferent aerial “ping-pong”, which drew some caustic comments from the stands.
At the break Camborne remained 19-10 ahead and the Seasiders knew they had to claim the first score of the second half if they were to remain in touch in and in with a chance. Sadly, it was not to be as almost from the re-start Mankee was on target with a straightforward penalty attempt, as the visitors were caught offside in midfield. 22-10 soon became 29-10, as right wing Cameron Bone touched down on 47 minutes, with Mankee slotting the conversion and either side of the hour mark Notman crossed twice in close succession, as Bude’s defence was overrun, with Mankee again on target with the conversion attempts. With plenty of time still remaining on the clock the half century of points was looking probable, but to their credit the visitors rallied and their defence refused to capitulate. Outside centre Ben Couch had a couple of good runs and replacement right wing Dan Denton also caught the eye with a couple of half breaks, but neither could break the shackles of Camborne’s strong defence and as the clock ticked down the game became a little scrappy.
Finally came Risdon’s dismissal, which appeared rather harsh when Pascoe looked equally at fault, but it rather summed up Bude’s day; a tasty first course, followed by an off colour seconds and a bitter pill to swallow at the finish. The referee’s report will be awaited with interest.
This Saturday the Seasiders return to home territory after two weeks on the road, as they entertain struggling Devonport Services. When the sides met at the Rectory Field in mid September Services triumphed 33-19, as their visitors put in a dismal performance. Bude therefore have every incentive to set the record straight, as they seek a confidence boosting victory so as to consolidate their mid table position in their last fixture before the Christmas and New Year break.

Martin Biddick 1957 – 2009
The family and relatives of Martin Biddick regret to announce that Martin finally lost his battle with cancer on September 9th 2009. Martin was a Camborne man and followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, W.T. Biddick and his father Max Biddick in supporting the “Cherry and Whites”.
Whilst living and working in Devon and though not a player himself, Martin worked quietly in the background helping the committee of 2002 in setting up and running Camborne RFC’s first ever web site. The quality and detail of the research work required to design and present the proud history of the club and the achievements of its players, was rewarded by the RFU when they awarded Camborne RFC the coveted Web Site of the month award.
Those who helped Martin keep the web site up to date; will know that he was always available and willing to assist with the usual last minute requests for publicity of events, match reports or advertising.
He will be sadly missed by all his family, friends and the club.
The funeral service will be held this Friday 18th Sept at Penmount Crematorium Truro @ 12 o'clock and there will be a minutes silence before Town's fixture with Withycome this weekend
Camborne 0 - 5 St Ives
Dave Roberts breaks from the scrum Crunch! Tom Hinds & Cameron Bone make an impact
It took 88 minutes for the only score in this friendly to arrive but despite this it was a far from boring fixture. Both teams were fully committed in this sometimes firery encounter at the Rec where defences were on top for most of the match. Camborne had by far the best start and dominated the first quarter keeping St Ives pinned in their own 22 for most of it, with a very physical defence by the Saints denying Town the points on the board they deserved.

Going nowhere - Deano & Sam stop the big guy Puppy gets tacked with Joe Parma in support
There were very few clear cut scoring opportunities in the first half with Camborne having the best of them in the shape of 2 penalties which were just wide of the mark. The half ended on a bit of a sour note with a St Ives player sin binned in the last play of the half for a spear tackle behind Towns line, this could easily have resulted in a Red card if the game were not a friendly.
James Goldsworthy soars high to win the ball Hinds and Robbo make a quick break
St Ives upped their game in the second half and had the lions share of territory and possesion but found the Camborne defence on very good form. Both teams had scores notched off in the second half, Town for crossing in the move that would have led to a try and the Saints for not grounding the ball. Going in to the final few minutes of the game it was St Ives turn to miss a very kickable penalty and then one last surge in the 8th minute of injury time saw prop Oggy Wright driven over for a score in the corner.

Camborne 24 - 17 London Cornish
Both teams contributed well to this early season friendly at the Recreation Ground which despite the early kick off (12.30) was watched by a crowd of 250+. Town opened the scoring on 10 minutes when following a turnover at a ruck just outside the Cornish 22, Fly Half Mankee made a superb break outwitting the defence to dart over for a try which he then converted.

Following further pressure Camborne were awarded a penalty 30 meters out which Mankee put just wide. On 18 minutes Town went further ahead with a well taken try by Sam Matavesi who raced through to gather a kick ahead from Mankee before chipping the ball over the full back and touching down. Mankee added the extras to give Camborne a 14 - 0 at the end of the first quarter.
Town then changed 14 of their team with only Laurie Manna staying on moving from Centre to Full Back, Cornish only made a couple of changes to their starting line up. The away pack then started to dominate and after being held up over the line twice in quick succession were able to make it third time lucky with a pushover try, the touchdown going to prop Gibbs. Cornish continued to have the upper hand throughout the second period and were rewarded with a penalty on 35 minutes which left the score 14 - 10 at half time.

Camborne brought the last 7 of their huge squad on for the 3rd quarter, with another 10 changes in total. London Cornish were still in the ascendancy and went over for another scored on 42 minutes by Tom Rickhill converted by Connor O'Dawes to give the visitors the lead at 14 - 17 at the end of the quarter. This was the sign for Camborne to up their a game and following yet more substitutions they went back in front on 62 minutes. After a superb break by Joe Parma in which he beat several defenders, a very good handling move was rounded off by wing Rob Floyd, the conversion was missed but Town now led 19 - 17. Camborne continued to win good ball and following a break from a scrum 25 meters out Tom Hinds burst through to score, again Town were off target with the conversion but ran out deserved 24 - 17 winners.

With so many players being changed throughout the game it would have been hard to give someone the man of the match award, but special mention must be given to back row players Sam Matavesi, Ryan Spargo and Dave Roberts (capt) who's work rate was immense and secured tremendous amounts of ball. In the backs Joe Parma, David Mankee and Rob Floyd all stood out and took the game to the opposition at every opportunity and Dean Pascoe tackled everything that moved.
