Alan Truscott’s Chairman’s chat No. 1 (season 2010/11)
A new season awaits with new challenges to meet and a South West One League campaign to enjoy. As I said in my report at the AGM in early June “we have enjoyed a fantastic 2009/10 season winning the Western Counties League. This coming season it will be vital to back that up with a solid campaign in South West One. To do this will mean that we will need a collective effort and ambition as a whole club and I would ask that all members, players and supporters do whatever you can to make 2010/11 season successful on and off the field. It’s no good sitting back and patting ourselves on the back; we have to pick up the momentum and move forward”.
Since the AGM a great deal has happened and needs reporting.
Firstly, as most people are aware, I have stood down as Director of Senior Rugby which will allow me more time to dedicate to my Chairman’s role. I’m delighted that Michael Symons, who had fulfilled splendidly the role of team secretary for a considerable number of years, has agreed to take the reins as D. of R. Chris French, who has spent several years coaching and working as a committee member with the colts will be stepping into the team secretary role. ‘Billard’ and ‘Frenchy’ are great clubmen who, I know, will give ‘heart and soul’ to their respective new roles.
I’m also delighted to report the appointment of Trevor Harris as clubhouse manager. Trevor has considerable previous connections with the club as a past player and a very effective, popular club chairman. Currently steward at Camborne Cricket Club he will be commencing this very important and challenging post on August 9th. The club committee are delighted with this appointment and Trevor’s enthusiasm and excitement for his new post now need to be matched equally by all members supporting new initiatives and fresh ideas that he will bring to the club.
During June and July a much needed revamp of both bars is being undertaken by a few stalwart club committee members. This ‘maintenance’ team led by Phil Woods, Colin Stevenson and Carey Thomas are currently busy putting the final touches to the lounge bar, which has been completely redecorated and renamed the ‘Cherry and Whites’ bar. I’m sure Phil, Colin and Carey would like me to thank also Ewart White, Brian James, Neil Teague, Brenda Woods, Angela Bradshaw, David and Jonathan Rogers for their invaluable assistance during the last month on this time consuming project. The main bar, to be called the ‘Town Bar’ will be receiving similar treatment during July and August. Those members who volunteered at the AGM to help with this work will be receiving a phone call from Phil in the not too distant future. Thank you everyone for your efforts.
On the playing side I have to report that young Sam Matavesi has joined Plymouth Albion. Although an obvious loss to us his considerable potential has obviously been recognised by Graham Dawe and on behalf of everyone at the club I wish Sam every success as he starts out on a professional rugby career. With Josh at Exeter and Sam now at Plymouth and younger brother 14 year old Joel waiting in the wings we are proud as a club to have been involved in their personal and sporting development over many years. Both Josh and Sam know where their roots are and hopefully we will see them return regularly to the club and, who knows, we might see them don the cherry and white shirt again in the future. Let’s hope so.
Our league rugby will have new points scoring system to get accustomed to for next year; a system that has been in operation from levels 1 to 5 has now been extended down the leagues as well. For a win 4 points; a draw 2 points; plus a bonus point if you score 4 tries and a losing bonus point if you are defeated by less than 7 points. It’ll be important to ‘hit the road running’ with this system with bonus points having a significant affect during the season.
Pre-season ‘friendlies’ have been arranged as follows: -
Thursday 19th August 1st squad v Penryn (home)
Thursday 26th August 1st squad v Penryn (away)
Saturday 28th August 2nd v Roseland (home)
[Kick off times of these matches to be confirmed with the Penryn games obviously being evening matches]
On the playing front I am pleased to report that, apart from Sam, we are retaining the squad that secured promotion to South West One last year. Additionally we have recruited to date the following players, all of whom will add vital depth and quality to our current senior squad.
Flyhalf / centre Bentley Orchard has rejoined the club having come up through our junior and colts sections. Experienced hooker Ben Priddey, again an ex Camborne junior player up to the age of 15, returns after playing his senior rugby in Redruth. Posted at Culdrose Ben is a regular in the navy squad and is also comfortable playing in the back row. Ex Brixham and Torquay 2nd row John Lamsin, with considerable experience playing S.W.1 rugby, has also registered with us. John is a colleague of Ben in the navy squad. Winger Nick Hichens, who last year played for St. Ives and was previously with the Mounts Bay club, will add to the competition in that position. Additionally two of our promising under 19 forwards, prop Will Webster and 2nd /back row Nathan Carbis have also registered at senior level.
A number of other local players have expressed an interest in joining the club and any further signings will be reported at the appropriate time.

First on the list is Avonmouth Old Boys who finish in 6th place last season so will provide the Cherry & Whites a stern test for their opening fixture.

Avonmouth RFC is one of the oldest clubs in Bristol and boasts a long and proud sporting history.
Founded in 1897 by local school master W Powell, the clubs first ground was on the banks of the river Severn in the region of the present West Wharf 2 of the Royal Edward Dock, and there it remained for six seasons. The team then, as now, was made of local talent.
The club has always been looked upon as one of the leading sides in the Bristol Combination and before the current league structure it achieved unparalleled success in the Evening post merit table and Bristol Combination Cup, mostly during the 1970s and 80s. During the past few season Avonmouth RFC has seen it fortunes re-emerge on the rugby field, returning to the success of that past glorious era.
Avonmouth RFC is a modern club with old fashioned values. It is a focal point of the local community and also provides facilities for member to develop both sporting and social skills. The club is built on a foundation that encourages participation and comradeship, and its recent successes both on and off the field have been well deserved.

Presentation Evening

All roads led to the Lowenac Hotel Camborne on Saturday evening as the great and the good gathered for the 132nd Camborne RFC Awards Presentation. The guest list was like a who's who of local celebraties, everyone who was anyone wanted to be seen at this gala event. The local press were out in force as Chairman Alan Truscott arrived with the famous white envelope containing the winners names clasped firmly to his chest, he would give no clues away until the presentations. Inside the banqueting suite the mood was one of celebration, as you would expect from a club which had recently won the league title in such great style. The entertainment was provided by Sam Matavesi (as usual) who always puts as much effort into the after match as he does during the game, giving 100% to both.

Tie and Badge winners - Steve Larkins, David Mankee, Ryan Spargo and Sam Matavesi with John Dunstan
During his speech Club President John Dunstan praised the work and dedication of the players, most of whom grew up in the Town, saying how proud he was of the effort they put in without the need for cash inducement. He also had special praise for club coach Steve Larkins, recalling the first conversation between them when Steve had told him he intended to win the league this season. John thought that would be a tall order seeing as Town had just avoided relegation the previous season, but was impressed at Steve's ambition and attitute towards the task he was to undertake. He also spoke of the clubs success as a whole with the 2nd Team finishing as Runners up in their Merit table, (with 4 games in had over the winners they could well have picked up the trophy) and the Mighty 3rd's Winning their Merit Table for the second season in a row. Alan then took the reigns for the Awards presentations as he went on to extol the commitment and virtues of the prize winners, and here are the best of the best from the Cherry & Whites for the 2009/10 Season.

Mayors Award for Town
On Thursday evening members of Camborne RFC attended the annual CAMBORNE TOWN COUNCIL AWARDS EVENING
Outgoing mayor Mr Bill Jenkin presented the club with an engraved Town Plaque which was received on behalf of the club by Chairman Alan Truscott and First Team Captain David Roberts.
The award was given to the club following a very successful season during which the club represented Camborne throughout the West of England and at the same time proving to be excellent ambassadors for the Town.
This award has proved once more that the club has raised its profile within the community and is testimony to all the hard work put in by one and all.
A good crowd from the club were in attendance and the after ceremony buffett went down very well.
This year has been an award winning season for the Cherry & Whites with no fewer 5 coming their way. Firstly picking up the Arthur Hunt Memorial Trophy with their victory over London Cornish, followed by the Tommy May trophy voted for by CRFU referee's society. Then of course the Western Counties league trophy and the 3rd team Merit Table shield, now the Mayor's award which has capped an extra special season the club, follow that as they say!.
