Burnley 1st 15 v Aldwinians 1st 5
Saturday 8th November
Burnley managed there second league win of the season to move up three places in the league and are now showing signs of their potential, after losing there first six games of the campaign.
Their first try was scored by youngster Phil Hesketh who showed a clean pair of heals when he received the ball from a good run by captain Getty Schinkel to score in the corner, the conversion was missed. Next to score was Mike Walker following some wonderfull inter passing between new recruit Riki Cribb and Simon Finnan sent the try scorer away to run half the length of the pitch beating two men, to score in the corner, again the difficult conversion was missed. The 1st half finished with” handbags at dawn” and a player from each side enjoying 10 minutes of rest after receiving a yellow card.
Into the second half with the Manchester side coming back into the match scoring a try out wide, the score now 10 to 5 to the home side. Burnley weren't for throwing this game away and sub Gavin Gregory made a darting run and from the resulting scrum Laurie "Smudge" Smith crossed the line out wide to make the score 15 to 5, this is how the game finished. Burnley now move on to play Tyldesley away on Saturday, K.O. 2.30pm.

Round 1 Lancashire Cup Saturday 30th August
The rugby season is back with a bang as Burnley progressed into round two of the Lancashire cup even though they very slowly, and were 5-0 down for over 40 minutes, until the training ground moves and team work began to show that this team is looking at another strong season in their new league.
Burnley first try was a team effort with some excellant passes through Richard Murray and David Collinge which freed Jonathan Doney who raced down the touch line to cross the line,to level the scores. Southport seemed to be tiring now and a quick scrum against the head allowed Getty Schinkel the Burnley no8 to free the scrum half Simon Finnan who in turn released Gavin "My legs move quicker than my brain" Gregory to beat is man and score in the corner, this try being converted by Dom Leck. Burnley's third try was the best, following a good line Nino Angelone passed to Finnan who threw an outrageous dummy which allowed him to release last years leading try scorer Laurie "Smudge" Smith to cross the line to begin is defence of last years leading try scorer trophy. The final try was scored by seventeen year old debutant Phil Hesketh who crossed the line out wide, this was converted by Steve Kent, so with the final score at 24-5 Burnley move into round two, where they have drawn locals rivals Colne and Nelson which will be an inviting home match later on in the season.

Season 2007/8
Burnley 1st team 5 Heaton Moor 1st team 12
In what can on be described as monsoon conditions Burnley and Heaton Moor played a solid game between one another and showed why these two clubs sit top of the division. Heaton Moor scored two tries in the first half with the first one being a nice try, but the other a Burnley error. With torrential rain and hailstones coming down the Burnley players began to take control and mauled the ball well with good forward play from Laurie Smith, Nick Cassidy and Nathan Welsh.
Into the second half and Burnley now had the wind behind them,a scrum saw the Burnley pack drive and scrummage well, with Jonathan Doney crossing the line for a well deserved try playing is best game of the season. Burnley were unfortunate not to level before the final whistle. Comments from the ref. saying a draw would have been a fair result, but Heaton Moor won by one score and finish top of the league, with Burnley now going into a play off at the end of the season.
Heaton Moor 1st 29 Burnley 1st 16
Saturday 15th March
Burnley travelled to Heaton Moor on the back of a 19 match winning run but faced a team who had not lost all season .We expected it might be a fierce contest in this Lancashire plate affair, and we wasn’t disappointed. Burnley struck first with a Griffiths Penalty but Heaton Moor replied with two of their own and a try to take the lead at 11-3 but just before the break Burnley’s Griffiths slotted over another penalty to keep the game evenly poised going into the second half at 11-6.
The second half and Burnley gave away two sloppy tries by missing first time tackles which cannot be accepted at this level and so now they were playing catch up, behind at 29_6. Burnley then started to show there fighting spirit, which led to two late tries one from Jonathan Doney and the other from Billy Ingham, unfortunately this was not enough and Burnley were out of the cup. They now have the chance to get their revenge, when Moor comes to Burnley in two weeks time, this time in the league. This should be a very hard game of rugby, and with both sides having some great running backs it will be an exciting match.
So put the date in your diary. Saturday 29th March KO 3.00pm.

One of the worst conditions to play rugby, but Burnley came through this Lancashire plate game and move into the quarter finals and takes their unbeaten run to 11 games, going into there final league game before Christmas.
The game turned into a mud bath and in the first half burnley had to settle for a single penalty with the referee seeming to be more penalty happy than needed to be in these conditions to let the game flow, with a player from each side sent to the sin bin and then a player from each side sent off.
Into the second half and the whistle was again running this game with very little advantage shown when Burnley began to get there quick lads going Simon Dawes and Ray Burgess showed what could have been done with better conditions. In this half burnley scored a good forward try as a line out was taken and Laurie "Smudge" Smith barged is way over in the corner, to seal the win. This week Burnley are back playing league rugby against Ashton Under Lyne away.

Burnley 1st 16 Bolton 1st 9
Burnley took a well deserved lead after the pack had dominated the first few exchanges, when John Fenney came up with the ball and crashed over the line. Unfortunately the home side then conceded 2 silly penalties which Bolton converted, This was followed quickly by 2 penalties from Burnley , which gave them a 11-6 lead. Bolton pulled another penalty back, but in the closing minutes Simon Finnan crossed the line to score, this converted try gave Burnley a great win, and now leave them in a four way tie with Eccles, Old Bedians and Bolton.

Old Bedians 1st 10 Burnley 1st 19
Burnley took a good following of past players to this game as both teams were trying to secure 2nd place outright and with some favourable results elsewhere, this was achieved. What was pleasing to see was new recruit Nathan Welsh scoring is 1st try in Blue and Gold of Burnley. Following a few minutes of wonderfull inter-passing Nino Angelone crashed over the whitewash, to record a well deserved away win, which Cemented the club into the 2nd place position.
10th Nov
Burnley 1st 13 Ashton Under Lyne 1st 3
Another solid if somewhat scrappy game of rugby kept Burnley on the march for a very high finish in their league campaign. Playing against the wind in the 1st half they only allowed Ashton one attempt for points which they took, but then the Burnley pack began to dominate set scrums allowing the returning Robert Bythell to settle in like he had not been away, a great asset to whichever team he plays in. Following a scrummage No 8 Gerrit Schenkel picked up the ball and powered his way over the try line for his 1st try of the season, leaving Burnley going in at half time 5-3 to the good.
Into the second half and Burnley defence just seems to get better and better, and from strong work around the ruck Bythell picked up the ball and powered over for a try. So with only one score separating the two teams Burnley were awarded a penalty and upped stepped Dominic Leck to slot the between the posts to get the well deserved extra three points, to seal the win.
Trafford MV 1st 11 Burnley 1st 19
Saturday 20th October
What a great game witnessed away at Trafford from the first minute when new recruit Nathan Welsh rose to take the kick off until the final minute when Laurie Smith finished the match off with a try.
In the first half Burnley seemed to have all the possession but could not for the life of them cross the line and Trafford finished the half taking two penalties to lead at half time 6-0.
Into the second half and Trafford scored from the first play so Burnley needed to something very quickly, next to score was in fact Burnley on there comeback over went Smith for a unconverted try, next following a good driving maul by the pack, up came scrum half Simon Finnan to score his third of the campaign. So with very little time left on the clock Burnley had taken the lead by a point as Dominic Leck sent over the conversion returning after a lay off out through injury. However the team rounded things off from a good scrum and Smith finished with his second of the game.
Pleasing to see was the debut of both Welsh and Scott Manning giving the squad more depth in players to challenge for the rest of the season. This week Burnley take on Bolton at home kick off 3:PM
Littleborough 1st team 10 Burnley 1st team 20
The first time in many years Burnley traveled to Littleborough and came away victorious, this has not seen for well over 10 years. From the very first tackle made by the Burnley side they were on top. It was obvious from the start Burnley wanted to throw the ball around, but when they did decide to kick ahead and play in the opposition half Littleborough conceded a penalty which Simon Finnan took quickly and fed Laurie Smith who went over the line to score in the corner. The next score came again from a Littleborough infringement and Richard Griffiths took the three points to take the lead 8-0. Littleborough were then awarded a penalty, it was converted which gave them 3 points back. Into the last few minutes of the 1st.half and Burnley passed the ball down the back line to Mick Walker who beat is man on the inside to touch down under the posts, Griffiths converted. Half time 15-3.
Now Burnley had to defend as Littleborough were playing down the slope of the pitch, but some great defence from Paddy Murphy returning after injury, and good work in the line out by Billy Lancaster stopped Littleborough getting any good ball, then they were awarded a penalty which they took from the wrong place and crossed the line but somehow the referee decided to give it and the try was also converted. Burnley were holding out now, then from a scrum number eight Gerrit Schenkel, returning after a while back in South Africa, picked up the ball and fed Smith who powered over for is second try of the game and third of the season. So final score 20-10 in Burnley favour. One highlight of the day was also when Lancaster went strongly through a maul and seeing a ball on the floor he hacked the it on, only to realise it was a football that had come onto the rugby pitch, from the soccer pitch next door, this brought a smile onto everyones face. Burnley now move up to fourth in the league and with players returning from injury should compete with most teams in the league now
After beating Ashton at home just three weeks previous, Burnley went into the last game before Christmas knowing it was going to be a hard encounter on Ashtons home ground. The game started very evenly with each side having strong runs but Burnley the pack seemed to be having an off day in the rucks and mauls and so could not capitalize until things turned round at half time and the Burnley pack went up a gear and started to take control. In the first half Ashton scored their only points with an unconverted try, but Burnley led through two Dom Leck penalties.
The second half and Burnley got on top in all areas, a special mention to Danny Marshall who almost won ever scrum even though he turned up for the match feeling a little under the weather. The first try for Burnley was a quick thinking tap penalty from Simon Finnan who fed Getty Schinkel who powered through a couple of tackles to score a unconverted try. Next on the score sheet was fly half Leck who is improving ever week with the boot and this week he added a try to his personal scoring tally for the season. Burnley were now controlling the game with Nick Cassidy strong in the set plays and this week beginning to show is old form in open play, covering lots of ground, this as been missing in a Burnley Shirt. Burnley's final try and the very final play of the half was a team effort as forwards mauled the ball down the pitch and with the backs running off each other Ray "NZ" Burgess scored in the corner in only is third game for the club.
So Burnley finish 2007 strongly placed in second place on theLeague table and in the quarter final of the cup, so hopefully the club is in for a very enjoyable 2008 with their first game in the new year against Old Bedians home on the 5th of January
Burnley 1st team 25 Windermere 1st team 5
Burnley were back on home soil last week and should have dominated this game much more but for some interesting referring decisions which constantly slowed the game down. Burnley's first try came when some dominant work by the pack saw Laurie "Smudge" Smith take the ball and barge two people out of the way and crossed the line in the corner, unfortunately he had to leave the field later in the game to a stamp to his head. Then Burnley began to think they could run the ball from anyway they felt like but this was not the case and they conceded a sloppy try to the opposition when a pass was intercepted and Windermere raced away for a unconverted try. this was shortly followed by a solid line out, which gave a good ball for Christian Allanson to take the ball at full pace, showing he is now fully recovered from is broken leg, and supply Mike Walker who probably played is best game in a Burnley shirt to round is man and over the line he went. The final try of the half went to captain Simon Finnan who supported well and the Windermere defence just opened up and he finished under the posts converted by Richard Griffiths. Windermere were now all but finished and the final act of the half was for them to concede a penalty which Richard Griffiths expertly converted from out wide to finish the half 20 - 5 to Burnley.
Into the second half and Burnley were showing a few sloppy areas that need working on at training, but then went on to score a try that was straight out of the training Manual, as Billy Lancaster rose high in the line out and sent the ball swiftly back to hooker Nino Angleone who then powered through the opposition hooker to score an unconverted try. This was the final score of the match, but Burnley should have had more, but the dropped passes, or no passes when people think they can do it all on their own, none were forthcoming. But there were positives, as another young lad, David Hoyle, began is first full game for the club and Allanson seems to get better ever week following his injury.
This week Burnley travel to Littleborough.

Eccles 1st 35 Burnley 1st 9
Burnley first team travelled to Manchester on the back of the comprehensive win the week before, taking on one of the form teams in the league and they were defeated, due to many missed tackles, with Burnley only deciding to start playing after they had conceded five tries. So work is required in training on the teams tackling. Unlike last Saturday, the players looked like they had turned up to play tag rugby.
Anyway some positives were the return of Mike Walker and Laurie Smith from their holidays and the kicking of Steve Kent with 3 successes from 3. This week Burnley are back at home against Windermere 3pm. kick off.

Burnley 1st team 86 Blackpool 1st team 0
Burnley ran riot at Holden road last Saturday notching up a total of 14 tries with Blackpool conceding with some time still on the clock.
The tries began from second row Jonathan Doney from a quick penalty 5 metres out converted by Steve Kent. Then Rick Delstrother began a personally try fest for himself going over in the corner for the first of his four. Next on the score sheet playing his last game before returning to University was Danny Campbell converted by Kent. Mat O'Connor then powered through a least 4 would be tackles to score under the posts converted again by Kent. Rick Griffiths then got in on the act crossing and converting is own try. Then just before half time Delstrother scored is second showing strength out wide to reach over the whitewash. The final try of the half went to Billy Lancaster supporting well to receive the ball from winger Mark Hanson to cross for his first of the season. Half time 43-0
Into the second half and Blackpool were now down to 14 men and Burnley showed no mercy as first Dave Collinge crossed followed by Nino Angelone and Jason "Dinger" Bell. Then the try of the match and Rick Delstrother's third as interplay between the front row released Simon Finnan who should poise as he threw two outrageous windmills sending Blackpool the wrong way the sent Delstrother over for a converted try by Kent. Next was a training ground line out and drive by the full forward pack and John Fenney came up with the ball. Then the backs showed they have learnt things in training and ran a good move which resulted in Delstrother crossing between the uprights and Griffiths this time converted. The final try was finished by Finnan as he was fed a ball from Angelone and out sprinted the covering defence. So a solid home win for Burnley but areas which need work will be the restarts as they had many times to practice and conceded so many poor takes. This week seems them travel to Eccles which will be a much tougher game and could show where Burnley will end up this season kick off is 3:00pm.
----------------------------------------------------------
Heaton Moor 1st 18 Burnley 1st 5
In the first league match of the season Burnley put in a performance that should be built on and the wins will start to come, if the can cut out drop balls and giving away the most obvious penalties the games have ever seen they will not concede certain points in a game. Heaton Moor scored first from a Burnley player deciding to have a go at the referee decision, a quick penalty by the home side and they had scored. The second try was a move down the back line resulting in there winger scoring in the corner. The last play of this half should have got Burnley back into it but the ref decided a Burnley player had dropped the ball over the line.
Into the second have and from a blatant penalty conceded by Burnley's number six cost them three further points, and so were now trailing 15-0. On came replacement Steven Kent making is debut for the first team and with is first ever touch in a first team shirt he crossed in the corner unfortunate he hit the post with his own conversion. Burnley conceded one final penalty and they had lost but some bright points were the centre pairing on Rob Hanson and Rick Delstrother and Paddy Murphy returning and showing what a strong prop he his. This weekend is a busy one at the club with players, officials and anyone else asked to support the club by watching England on the big screen Friday night, then on Saturday the 1st team are at home to Blackpool with a 3:00pm kick off.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yarnbury 1st team 32 Burnley 1st team 5
Burnley travelled to Yorkshire and were beaten in the 1st round of the national cup playing against a team one level up in the league structures. Going behind early to a well worked home try Burnley rallied round and began to get back into the match scoring in the corner with a pass from Simon Finnans relishing Rick Delstother to go over in the corner. This was the last time Burnley crossed the white wash.
Into the second half and Yarnbury began to dominate and much needed work at training is required before Burnley will be able to compete at this level, firstly they can not miss so many one on one tackles or get pushed around in the scrum. But positives to come from the game was the debut by Rob Hanson in the centre, unfortunate it was Paul Barwicks last game for the club as he hangs up is boots due to neck problems he as had over a number of seasons.
This week Burnley start they league campaign away to Heaton Moor.

Burnley played what can only be described as a great game to play in and hopefully to watch. They kept their winning run going with a last gasp penalty kick sailing through the centre of the posts. Burnley take all the points instead of a draw that could have been seen as a fair result. With the match kindly sponsored by the Builder Centre in Burnley and the Eccles players staying round after the game it showed great sportsmanship for this game, even though there were a few altercations throughout the match.
With the wind playing a key part in the match many balls were spilled by both sides but then a controlled maul by Burnley's entire pack and the supporting back of Richard Murray so him cross the line unfortunately the conversion was missed. Burnley took this lead into the second half, knowing a win would secure 2nd place.
Into the second half and Burnley lost Billy Ingham to injury but this did not effect the strength of the pack and some solid runs from Laurie Smith and Jack Stockdale and weaving runs by Michael McGee and Michael Walker kept pressure on Eccles unfortunately they conceded a try and so the score was 5-5. Then Burnley began to attack to try and win the match and fortunately Eccles prop conceded a silly penalty and up stepped Rick Griffiths to show nerves beyond is years, and kick the Penalty to steel a hard fought win.
This week Burnley play Blackpool away looking to keep this great season going, kick off 3:00pm
Windermere 1st XV 7 Burnley 1st XV 51
Burnley travelled up to Cumbria and showed real promotional form, apart from a middle ten minutes, when the players stopped playing like a team and started to play like individuals but a stern word from coach Phil Leck addressed this situation and the teamwork quickly resumed.
Burnley in the 1st half scored many tries through Laurie"Smudge" Smith’s great running, with new boy Gavin Gregory scoring on is debut for the 1st team stepping up from the colts, this was an excellent effort in the corner, quickly followed by seasoned campaigner Dave Collinge in the other, the final try by Burnley in this half was a strong effort from Billy Ingham converted by Dom Leck. Unfortunately Burnley conceded a break away try and went into half time 22-7 in front.
Harsh talking by coach Leck rallied the troops and Burnley began the second half strong, however one area which still needs plenty of work are the restarts, many times the home side kicked off following a Burnley score and Burnley gave away the ball from poor catching or poor support for the ball catcher. But then Burnley got back into their stride again with Smith going over for is second try, and then Jack Stockdale returning from long injury supporting well and scoring under the posts converted by Leck, A great team movement freed up Jon Paul Walton and he sprinted away to finish the nice move, converted this time by Richard Griffiths. The final score was Ingham ’second a nice forward try to finish the match on. Burnley are putting together what can only be a club record of sixteen consecutive wins and are consolidating their 2nd position in the league.
This week they travel to Bolton for a 2:15 kick off.
Burnley 1st team 8 trafford MV 1st team 7
Burnley consolidated second place in North Lanc's one with a last minute penalty to seal victory on home soil. Playing against the wind in the first half Burnley defended well and turned over the odd ball which they ran at the opposition but were unable to convert into points. After conceding to many penalties for coach Phil Leck to be happy with,Trafford crossed the Burnley line and easily converted the try to lead 7-0. Some great defence was show by debutant Jo Hesse in the centre playing well along Richard Murray going forward and the partnership can only get stronger as they learn off each other. So half time and Burnley were down 7-0
Into the second half and Burnley began counter rucking well and getting some good ball but that final pass was just letting them down, a change was made and the returning Billy Ingham came onto the pitch. Following the next line out Billy Lancaster took the ball well and fed it back to Ingham who powered over from five metres taking the Trafford wing in his stride. Unfortunately the conversion was missed so Burnley still had it all to do, then another enforced change saw Nathan Welsh leave the field with a broken figure and Mike Walker came on. The forwards were now dominating the line outs and a nice break by Simon Finnan, which was supported by Jason Bell and Laurie Smith resulted in Trafford conceding a penalty just short of the line and up stepped Dom Leck to kick the points and seal the win. Now Burnley must keep this run going, our next match being away at Bolton this week.
A Note for Players.
The Thursday night Training sessions, will take place on the Prairie All Weather Pitch for the next 10 weeks, starting at 7pm. The Tuesday night sessions will still take place at the Club.
Burnley 1st team 18 Old Bedians 1st team 0
Burnley got 2008 off to a great start with a comfortable win which could have been even more, but for certain players thinking they could do things on there own, instead of working as a team. Burnley's 1st try was a team effort as Oli Smithies caught the ball from a poor Bedians kick and inter passing by Mike Walker, Simon Dawes and Simon Finnan freed up Laurie "Smudge" Smith who finished off the move with a great team try. This was followed a short time later by a Rick Griffiths penalty kick, but with all the Burnley pressure, the home side should have scored more, but only went into half time 8-0 to the good.
The second half was more of the same, with Burnley dominating most areas of the game with Danny Marshall constantly disrupting the Bedians scrum and Billy Lancaster and Nathan Welsh stealing many of the opposition line out balls. With this constant pressure, Smith showed is strength again and powered two opposition players out of the way and scored his 8th try of the league campaign and put Burnley into a comfortable position. Next was an unfortunate incident which saw Nino Angelone leave the field with damaged teeth and is mouth all bloodied up, caused by a nasty gash in his lower lip. Burnley's final try of the game was an individual effort by Getty Schinkel powering through several would be tackles and stretching his massive frame to cross the line. Burnley now have gone 13 games undefeated with new blood again coming into the team. Burnley next game is a week on Saturday the 19th. away at Bolton hoping to consolidate second place and push on for the title.
