Burnley RUFC – Junior Tour to Antwerp
September 2011
Burnley Juniors took 30 to Belgium for the weekend with their base in Antwerp.
The group made up of players up to 16 years old made a pilgrimage to pay homage to the men that fell in the First World War at the Tyne Cot war cemetery in Flander fields, with a wreath being laid on the grave of one of the Burnley lads who paid the greatest sacrifice and then as in the photograph the whole touring side gathered to lay a wreath on the main memorial. Bill Dooley club vice chairman read out the names of 12 Burnley lads that could be found in the cemetery along with a short prayer, the junior team greatly respecting their surroundings.
This tour was the first ever Junior tour out of the country with the trip taking them to play on the Saturday Gent RC playing on 3G turf another first for the team the game was close with a strong defence Gent kept Burnley from scoring in the first quarter managing a try themselves left the Burnley squad over heating in the 28degree heat.
For the rest of the game Burnley dominated Gents forwards in all the set pieces and even though the remaining 3 quarters of the game were played in the Gent half Burnley only managed to equalise and then gain a small lead with fine tries from Lee Ferrier, Declan Hutchinson and James Henderson the game went down to the wire with second to go Danny Hodgson picked up the ball from the third phase of play and darted down the wing only to be denied the winning points by a foot going into touch. The game was followed by a presentation of gifts between the clubs and was part of the Gent clubs annual award night and BBQ with the lads enjoying time to get to know the local lads.
Sunday took the team to play Dendermond RC not far from Antwerp this club were reputed to be the stronger team in the area and they proved themselves to be a match for the Burnley squad. The game seemed to be a run away by Dendermond but with tries from Dominic Murphy, James Henderson, Lee Ferrier, Matthew Fordley and Declan Hutchinson the game was all tied. The forwards again dominated the set piece scrums and line outs but could not get the breakthrough they needed to secure the game. Dendermond still with fresh legs found the try line to again deny a Burnley win. With great hospitality the local side stayed for the days awards and for Burnley to honour their players of the tour.
The nominated man of the match was Matthew Ford-lee, with Declan Hutchinson the player player, Chris Pickles Coaches Forward player and Celyn Lennard Coaches Back player of the trip.
Bowdon U16 0 vs 34 BURNLEY U16s
The team enjoyed their trip to Millionaires row in Cheshire
The first half was a tight affair, nip and tuck between both sides, with both putting down try scoring chances.
Burnley opened the scoring with a try from Tom Cooley, after good driving, from the forwards Declan Hutchinson, Dom Frankland and Alistair Lancaster. Lee Ferrier slotted a nice conversion.
Thabo Ntini impressed with big tackles all day.
The teams turned round at half time with Burnley just the one converted try up.
As the second half went on Burnley started to increase the pressure and good running and support play from Colley, Ash Hancock and Joe Ellison started to tell .
The backs started to click in the last 20 minutes Lee Ferrier released the backs well and lovely angled running from centre powerhouse Ashley Nuttall lead to a lovely backs move that ended with Andy Routh-Smith going over for a great try. The forwards drove again with Jack Donney driving well, Colley powered over for a second try.
Pressure in defence lead to a real poachers try and Andy Routh Smith went the length of the pitch for a score, Ferrier put over the conversion
Anthony Clarke a livewire at scrum half, made a great blindside break, sold the defence with a great dummy and ghosted over the try line. The forwards got back on the act with strong driving, James Henderson powerfully break the line to score the final try.
BURNLEY U16s 51 vs 12 Clitheroe
Burnley entertained Clitheroe and produced an all-round team effort, for the first time Burnley had a full side showing how far this team is coming on. Prior to Christmas they had turned up at Clitheroe with only 10 players.
The match started with both teams giving there all with some powerful runs by the Clitheroe prop but some top tackling by Lloyd Whittaker kept them out.
Burnley got on the score sheet as Ash Hancock stretched his way over for the first of his 4 tries.
Second to score was Lee Ferrier who cut a great angle and sprinted away to score under the sticks which he converted. Hancock scored another in this half then David Graham scored his first try for the club and Burnley went in at half time 22-0 to the good.
Second half and Burnley were looking tired and were starting to give lazy penalties away but still managed another five tries two from Hancock, one more for Graham and one each for Tom Cooley and Jack Doney.
However Clitheroe got two of there own in this half.
After a resounding win Burnley have something to build on which can only be achieved if the lads start training on Tuesday at the club 7pm.
Special mention also for new prop Ben who turned up and had outstanding game, as well as Andrew on the wing who had not played rugby before and looked a good prospect
BURNLEY U16s 5 vs 35 North Ribblesdale
Burnley came up against a well drilled and quick team who left them for dead.
With Burnley being a very individual team, at the moment, when up against a good mauling and tackling team they came unstuck. North Ribblesdale scored a number of tries in the first half.
Positives from Burnley were good runs from Joe Ellison and Alistair but support was lacking, good scrums from Burnley pack with young hooker Dom Frankland performing well.
In the second half and Burnley scored there only try by fly half Tom Cooley but were outshone in most aspects in this game.
BURNLEY U15/16s 32 vs 0 Rossendale
What was a very wet morning Burnley managed to get 14 available players due to illness but these team is a work in progress so the result was a great one in context.
Returning Dec Hutchinson powered over for the first Burnley try, then some neat handling by the backs so Ash Nuttall go over under the sticks. Strong forward play and good runs from Joe Ellison and Danny Johnson put Burnley on top as Hutchinson scored again.
Next on the score sheet was Jack Wilkinson who charged down a Rossendale kick and over he went.
Into the second half and, with Rossendale reduced in players, Burnley lent them one to even things up.
Burnley kept running hard through Tybo and James Henderson, then it was released to Lee Ferrier who sprinted away.
So Burnley had shown a good team work, now plenty of training needs to happen to get a line out functioning in the pack and the backs dropping less ball.
Wigan 12 vs 5 Burnley U16s
Burnley travelled to Wigan for their first game of the new year with only eleven available players due to injury and players struggling to make the meet time.
Thank you to Wigan who leant a player and the match took place with Wigan having 13 players and Burnley playing with 12.
Starting slowly and playing like individuals Burnley had no pattern to there play but were showing some good individual play through Ash Nuttall, Jackson Linford and Dom Frankland.
Unfortunately Wigan then had a couple of team plays and they scored two first half tries converting one.
Into the second half and the lads were beginning to work better as a team and now so some good team work through forwards making hard runs in young Alistair and good passing out to the backs by captain for the day Lee Ferrier, who went on to score Burnley only try.
So a pleasing last twenty however serious work needs to be done on the training ground on Wednesday night at 7pm if this side want to improve on there individual talent
The second match of the weekend for Burnley took on the local Clitheroe side for their first game of the season.
Clitheroe were dominated from the start with the game the previous day Burnley were not rusty and it showed with quick ball and strong work by the forwards the first try came with the first few minutes.
Clitheroe rallied but again Burnley used the width of the pitch to run in a second try with this converted. Burnley ran in one more try before half time with a Clitheroe try from well worked drive which lifted the visiting side.
The second half saw injuries to Clitheroe players with loans from Burnley the side were evened up in size which gave Clitheroe a boost to start to even up the score with Burnley. The end result was a true reflection of the Burnley sides efforts but did show that making mistakes did cost them points.

Burnley Under 11’s A (5 tries) vs Aberdeen Under 11’s (3 tries)
Burnley did not have an easy game against this well drilled side with set piece play well executed by Aberdeen and the first try of the game coming from a set piece breaking though the defence with an Aberdeen forward. Burnley reacted to the set piece and closed down the set piece and go on the attack, with Burnley’s first try in the first half settling the team down. The first half ended with the game tied with two tries each.
The second half with the fall of the pitch and the determination from bigger Burnley player caused mistakes from the Aberdeen side which Burnley quickly moped up to secure a second half win.
Burnley Under 11’s B (3 tries) vs Aberdeen Under 11’s (5 tries)
With Burnley fielding many new players a second team was formed to give the visiting side extra playing time to make the trip worth while, this with a few lone players to Aberdeen gave all the player a good game. Aberdeen took advantage early to take the lead with some excellent ball handling to make gaps in the Burnley defence. Aberdeen took the lead and never let the lead go with good work on the ground rucking over the Burnley ball. Burnley did not let the game go all Aberdeen’s way and still ran in 3 brilliant tries.
Just a note to say thanks very much for the game and hospitality on saturday. Although there was an age difference, our guys felt a bit of pride in what they achieved.
I was impressed with the way your guys played - passing and structure and wish them all the best for the future.
I liked the club atmosphere where the best of rugby traditions of mixing after the game took place. The game of juice and crisps went down well with our guys and they all had their medals on when they met their parents yesterday.
If you ever fancy a trip north, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Thanks again
