College Rugby Going Strong!!
|
|

Burnley College, Nelson College and Clitheroe Sixth Form.
|
|
Over 50 lads took to the rugby pitch.
Burnley Rugby Club was buzzing as Burnley College, Nelson College and Clitheroe Sixth Form brought their squads over to play in a round robin competition.
|
|
The First game saw a strong well-drilled Burnley College team take on Clitheroe Sixth Form.
Although the match was close to start with, Burnley College who now play regularly in the College BUCS competition started to play some nice flowing rugby.
As Clitheroe got tired the gaps opened up and tries started to come thick and fast.
To Clitheroes credit they never gave up and made Burnley fight for all there scores.
|

|
|

|
The second game saw Nelson College take on Clitheroe.
Nelson College who where playing their first game of the year had a squad of 18. Some playing regularly for the local club but some playing their first game of rugby.
Nelson College won the game and the players showing signs that there where some very talent players.
|
|
Nelson Colleges’ with the talent shown in this first game & the strength of the players in defence and attack.
The final game against Burnley College would be a close and hard fought match.
|

|
|
Burnley where favourites to win.
They did not disappoint.
Holding their structure and playing a fast and attacking style if rugby they wore down Nelson and went in at half time a couple of scores ahead.
Nelson College came out looking to improve and try and cause an upset.
|
|

|
Both teams looked good with the ball in hand.
It was nice to see teams trying to find space and not just running straight into the opposition.
Burnley College score a couple more tries to close the game on Nelson College.
The Ref blew the final whistle and Burnley had won.
|
|
Overall the Tournament was a great success.
It saw 50 boys at 16-19 playing at one of their local clubs.
Thanks must go to Burnley Rugby Club who organised the ref and facilities
to allow this tournament to go a head.
Due to the success of the tournament and discussions with the College coaches.
Burnley Rugby are now looking to create a new Senior Colts team (for players aged 17-19)
to allow the transition between junior and adult rugby to become a lot easier for the players
and also as an extra way of developing their players.
If you are interested in playing in the Senior Colts please contact
Chris Lowden CRC Burnley and Pendle on chrislowden@rf.com or 07894489731.

BURNLEY RUFC NEWS JANUARY 2011
Dear Members
I would like to wish everybody connected with Burnley RUFC a Happy and Healthy New Year. Hopefully 2011 will be an enjoyable and successful year both on and off the field.
Due to the snow and heavy frost, there has only been one third team match since Sat 20th November, so it will be a pleasant change to get back into action next Saturday – 8th January, when the first team entertain Ashton-under-Lyne.
This year sadly I have to record the Deaths of four of our members –
Cyril Rogerson, the father of Belvedere & Calder Vale Sports Club stalwart John and long-time supporter of the Corinthians and Vice Presidents’ lunches; Eric Bythell, father of former players Dominic and Rob, who regularly encouraged unsuspecting persons to part with their cash for the benefit of the Club; Simon Rycroft, father of student first-team squad member Danny and wife of former Junior Registrar Kath, who was an inspirational leader of the lower teams and was affectionately known as ‘Captain Chaos’; and last but not least Les Horrocks, in his time a loyal member of the Thirds and Fourths and regular supporter of the bar when he lived on Holden Road. The number of members who attended the services for Eric and Simon, and the joyous occasions at the Club afterwards, bore testimony to the caring Rugby family that is Burnley RUFC.
The season continues well for the three Senior Teams with the first team sixth in North Lancashire Division One; the second team, captained by Gus Ferguson, fourth in the University of Salford, (formerly Miller Homes), Division Four East and the third team, led by Bob Walsh, inspired by his three weeks trip to the Antipodes to play in the Golden Oldies Festival in Sydney, fifth in the University of Salford Division Five North.
Positions could be even higher as all our teams have a match in hand over the teams ahead of them. The enthusiasm and dedication of all the players has resulted in good attendance at training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Sessions have been well directed by Club Coach Getty Schinkel, ably assisted by Captain Nino Angelone and the evergreen Simon Finnan.
The following are the dates of the Re-arranged First Team Fixtures:
Sat 12th Feb - Hawcoat Park (Home)
Sat 26th Feb - Hutton (Away)
Sat 19th March - Newton-le-Willows (Home)
Sat 2nd April - St Edwards OB (Away)
All the fixtures, including the re-arranged dates for the second and third teams, appear on the Burnley Rugby Club Website - www.burnleyrugbyclub.com.
Getty Schinkel was chosen as a Finalist in the Mastercard Competition, one of 16, to select a coach to stay with the Barbarians squad prior to their match with South Africa on Sat 4th December.
The day was hosted by Will Greenwood at Twickenham and included an interview, a tour round the famous stadium and lunch in one of the hospitality restaurants. Although Getty did not win, he was nevertheless invited to attend a Barbarians’ coaching session a couple of days before the match. Because of the weather it was held in a sports hall and was directed by Nick Mallett, the Italy Coach and former Springbok Coach. On Sat 4th December Getty returned to Twickenham with his wife Ashley for the match, entertainment in a hospitality suite and the opportunity to meet the players of both teams. This was richly deserved by new father Getty for all his work on behalf of Burnley RUFC and was most appropriate as the opposition was his beloved South Africa.
It is pleasing to note that Burnley College has now established a Rugby Club with the first team playing in the British Colleges Sport North West Participation League. The team which is coached by Andy Roberts, assisted by Brian Foley, plays their home matches at Holden Road. Already we are seeing the benefits with three youngsters playing for the third team on Saturdays.
The Annual Awards Evening was held on Sat 13th November when Chairman Chris Egan made the presentations. The outstanding performers for Season 2009-2010 were: Clubman of the Year – Bob Walsh; Most Improved Player – Adam Spencer; Leading First Team Try Scorer – Phil Hesketh; Second XV Player of the Season – Adam Lee and Third XV Player of the Season – William Yip. It will be interesting to follow the future careers of these committed players.
The tradition of touring by Burnley RUFC continues. Recent countries visited have included Sardinia, China, USA and Portugal. This year the planned Tour is back to Germany – to Cologne. The party travels overnight by boat from Hull on Thurs 12th May and returns to Burnley on Tues 17th May. More details can be obtained from the new Tour Organiser Paddy Murphy on 01282 454795 (H), or by e-mail at premiumplumbing@hotmail.com
New Members are always welcome at Holden Road. Please encourage likely lads to join us or alternatively why not polish up your own boots and come out of retirement. Regardless of age, you still have something to give to the lower teams. Just phone Coach Getty Schinkel on 07975 644317 (M). Alternatively contact Team Secretary Simon Finnan on 07988 122186 (M), or by e-mail at simonfinnan@hotmail.com Otherwise just turn up at the Club - You know where we are!!
The Junior Section continues to thrive with a band of dedicated helpers running teams at five different age levels on Sunday mornings and organising a variety of social events for the youngsters. There have been changes at the top with Martin Churchill, having succeeded Rab Logue at the end of last season, standing down from the position of Chairman at the end of the year.
Mick Heys has agreed to step up from Vice Chairman. There has also been a change of RFU Community Rugby Coach for Burnley and Pendle with the enthusiastic Ulsterman Chris Lowden moving into the area in September. Should you know of any boys or girls who would like to join in the fun at Burnley Rugby Club, please contact Mick Heys on 01282 454015 (H) or 07972 281680 (M). Alternatively Mick can be contacted by e-mail at nicky.heys@sky.com
Thanks to the sterling efforts of Steve Jackson, building on the work started by Sam Boyle and Martin Churchill, there is now a highly informative Burnley RUFC Club Website - www.burnleyrugbyclub.com which contains numerous items from the past; reports of current happenings; administrative documents and notice of future events. It is well worth a browse and is now the best way to keep in touch with the Club.
Contact with John Aldridge (South Africa); Ken Corlett (Beiruit); Nigel Fitzpatrick (Spain); Ian Rawcliffe (Germany) Bruce Richmond (New Zealand); David Smith (Canada); Richard Vaughton (France) and Karl Wilkins (New Zealand) confirm that the web-site is being read by former players around the world. If you have any news or comments, please write to Club Webmaster Steve Jackson at s.jackson.770@btinternet.com
The Database is a vital component of the Club’s Communications system. Should your details change, please could you contact Steve Jackson on s.jackson.770@btinternet.com Also if you notice that any of your contemporaries do not appear on the circulation list, please could you advise Jacko of their details.
Mickey Duerden has again organised a couple of highly successful Vice Presidents’ Lunches. At the lunch in March ‘Mr Tours’ and Chief Prosecutor Paul Roden was awarded a President’s tie and in October Keith Alexander, Colts Coach in the Seventies and long-term Club worker, received the same honour.
At the latter lunch, I also presented a tankard, which will be kept behind the bar, inscribed ‘The Raffle King’, to Maraleen Bythell, in memory of her husband Eric. In future it will be used whenever there is a raffle. Eric would have been proud of the inaugural launch as Sam Boyle and Stuart Douglas used the tankard to such good effect that there was a record profit for the Club!!
The next Vice Presidents’ Lunch will be held on Sat 9th April, before the match against Hutton. Details will be circulated soon. I hope that you will be able to join us on that occasion.
John Collier has written a book entitled ‘Tales of The Vale’ which he describes as: “a humorous and nostalgic look at amateur Rugby Union – and other things which went on as well at a mythical rugby club which strongly resembled Calder Vale/Burnley Rugby Club”. The rib-tickling book should be a compulsory read for former Calder Vale players, to remind them of the past; and for current and future generations of Burnley players, to make them aware of the heritage of our great friendly Club.
It was launched at a happy evening at its spiritual home on Fri 24th September. Copies of this 272 page ‘laughterpiece’ can be obtained from behind the bar at the Club, or from www.talesofthevale.com for £12.50, including post and package. £1 from each sale will be donated to the RFU Injuries Foundation Charity.
A variety of other social events have been held during the year - the Annual Players’ Dinner in February, when the speaker was Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Knight, one of Will Carling’s original ‘Old Farts’; the Summer Ball, masterminded by Phil Harbour and Paul Roden, in August, when the ladies were hosted at Turf Moor; and a Sportsmens’ Evening last month when we were entertained by the larger-than-life former British Lion, Doddy Weir.
This year the Annual Players’ Dinner will be held on Sat 2nd April when the speaker will be Peter England, the official England Mascot in all his tail-coated splendour. Tickets (£20) will be available from the Captains and Peter Hughes.
At the end of last season, a Duty Officer Rota was started whereby, at each of the home first team matches, there is Duty Officer in action. This person, referring to a check-list of duties, ensures that all matters connected with the match, (before, during and after), work smoothly and so guarantee that our guests are made to feel welcome. I would like to thank those recently retired players who have offered their time, (five hours, once a season), and would ask any other non-player who is prepared to help, to contact me on 01282 771120 (H), or by e-mail at hughes@peter855.orangehome.co.uk
Please call in at the Club and keep in touch with former team-mates. Come along to cheer on the teams. There will always be a Welcome at Holden Road, whether for matches or social events. Keep an eye on www.burnleyrugbyclub.com I look forward to seeing you in the near future.
Best Wishes, Yours in Rugby,
Peter Hughes
(President Burnley RUFC)
