Great advert for rugby in Bucks, as High Wycombe wins the County Cup and Amersham & Chiltern wins the Shield final
Congratulations to High Wycombe and Amersham & Chiltern RFCs, the respective winners of the County Cup and Shield finals held on Saturday. Comiserations and a big "well done" to Milton Keynes and Phoenix RFC's, who both put up stern resistance and did themselves proud. I attended the Shield Final which was 8-5 to the host club with just 5 minutes to go when Phoenix broke the length of the field only to be denied by last gasp defence. It was that close. By all accounts Milton Keynes pushed High Wycombe equally close, with both games a great advert for Bucks club rugby.
Thanks to the two home clubs for laying on two great finals, indeed I gather the post match celebrations at High Wycombe were so intense the home club had to send out to the Rebellion brewery for reserve supplies! Also a big thank you to the Bucks Refs Society for officiating both finals and the entire tournament.
Also, congratulations to Marlow RFC who had their own final and narrowly beat Wootton Bassett in the Southern Counties promotion play-off, 18-16. The win means Marlow return to what we all know as SW2E next season, although I believe the Rugby Landscape restructure will mean a new title, possibly South West 1, with the existing SW1 becoming National 3 South West.
Our attention now turns to the County Championship where we face two tough trips to Sidcup RFC (Kent) and East Grinstead RFC (Sussex) over the next two Saturdays, before hosting our only home game, against Berkshire, at Buckingam RFC on 16th May. County club supporters suffering withdrawal symptoms after a fortnight's break are very welcome to come and get behind the county team!
I'd like to add my personal thanks to the club administrators and county competitions committee members who've helped make this year's County Cups get completed within the season. It's never easy when we lose a couple of league weeks to the weather, or have clubs enjoying great runes in RFU competitions, but thanks to a willingness to assist County we ended with two finals played in season.
Enjoy your summer, Sevens and Lions tour!
