RFU establishes Club Financial Helpline
The RFU has established a Financial Helpline for member clubs worried about how they will be affected by the economic downturn. It is managed by Malcolm Duncan, the former RFU Council member for Staffordshire, who is an expert in club finance. He is available to review any request for advice from clubs and provide them with support from a network of volunteers and RFU staff throughout the country.
"The concern is that there are clubs out there who will face financial difficulties during the downturn, including things like the loss of sponsorship income and cashflow problems," said Malcolm. The biggest danger is that these clubs won't realise that they are running into problems until it's too late, so the message is that they should carefully review their finances and expenditure and take action as soon as possible.
"We have a network of very experienced people who can assist them throughout the country as well as specialist help they can access at Twickenham."
The number to call for advice is 01782 610315 and the service operates Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm. Click here for further information
Club Legal Helpline
The RFU also operates a legal helpline (0870 060 3437) providing access to independent legal advice on all aspects of rugby operations and management. The legal helpline operates Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, excluding Bank Holidays.
Club Legal Status
The RFU is also concerned about the number of clubs which have unincorporated legal status and the consequent personal financial risk to their committee members and officers. "Certainly all clubs ought to consider whether they should become a limited company," added Malcolm.
Click here for more information about becoming a limited company, industrial & provident society or registering as a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) is available in the Club Management section.
