Saturday 15th July 2006 saw the welcome return of the Caltucker Cup to Bolton Rugby Club on Avenue Street as hosted by the Old Boltonians Rugby Club with the number of competing teams being increased for the first time to twelve in total including former players, students from Bolton University and ex players from Bolton School.
A warm welcome was extended to guests from Monavie(Galway), Nottingham and Altrincham respectively and the tournament begin with a tempestuous tussle between the latter two, resulting in a well earned 5-5 draw although both teams emerged somewhat battered and bruised.
Hence the tone was set for what was to prove a very impressive afternoon of fast paced and competitive rugby. All teams competed forcibly with not one ever giving up the chance to score tries even in the face of considerable adversity. Bolton Vets put in a strong set of performances before dropping into the Plate competition as did the eventual Plate winners Team Impact captained by Bolton RUFC stalwart Paul Hunt. The surprise package of the day proved to be the Bolton Teachers team including Andy Leigh from St James School and Pete Jackson from Thornleigh who battled through to the Cup semi finals after devastating their league in the early hours of the competition.
The Cup Final was keenly contested between the Altrincham Kersal/Waterloo team and a team consisting entirely of players from BRUFC with the Altrincham team emerging eventual winners and claiming the cup in their first year in the competition.
Many thanks go to all those involved especially the referees; Chris Meadows and Daniel Taylor, but especially to all those involved throughout the day at the hosts Bolton Rugby Club. Bolton Rugby Club are looking for new players for the coming season - training is Tues and Thurs night at 7.00p.m. at the club.
