Northumberland 5 - 56 Yorkshire
A strong first half by performance by Yorkshire in the Third round in the Northern U20s Championship on Sunday against Northumberland at Ashington.
Yorkshire took the lead in 3rd min with a penalty by Greg Lound (Hull) after Northumberland were caught offside. Yorkshire's first try came in the 6min after the Yorkshire forwards set up a try for Pete Homan (Middlesbrough) converted by Greg Lound.
Yorkshire continued to pressure the Northumberland line and in 20min Yorkshire had a close-range lineout that produced a driving maul which Ben Dorrington (Hull) emerged with the try, Lound added the extras. Yorkshire's next try came when Mark Gemmell (Leeds Met) made a break from a scrum and Ben Morris (Westoe) on a good support line completed the move, again the try was converted by Greg Lound.
Another penalty by Greg Lound and a try by Northumberland’s Sip Visser (Tynedale) made the half time score Yorkshire 27 Northumberland 5.
Northumberland gave Yorkshire a stern test at start of the second half when they came at Yorkshire fighting, but the Yorkshire defence coped well and Yorkshire then started to control game. On 63mins Northumberland failed to take their own lineout and Tom Moody (Morley) got in for the score.
After the all pressure they gave Yorkshire at start of the second half Northumberland started to tire, and Yorkshire scored four more tries in the last 10mins, 2 for Mark Gemmell (Leeds Met.) and one Tom Hodson (Sandal) and one for Will Robinson (Hull). Sam Watkinson (Durham Uni) on as a replacement added the extras for one of the tries.
This year, only the winners of the Northern group will progress to the next stage of the Competition rather than two in the previous years, it’s looking like our last game against Lancashire at Hull on the 20th March could be for the quarter-final, but we have beat Cumbria first at Penrith on the 6th March.
