CLARIFICATION STATEMENT
Q1: What age groups are being assessed?
A1: The age groups are for next season. Under 14's should be born between 1st September 1997 and 31st August 1998 and Under 13's between 1st September 1998 and 31st August 1999. There is an existing nominations pathway for 15's and 16's.
Q2: How many players can I nominate?
A2: No more than two nominations per club or school. If you feel that you really do have 3 or more potential England players in your side then can I please suggest that you communicate with either the club or school that the player is linked to and ensure that I receive their nomination.
Q3: Do existing SoR players have to be re-nominated?
A3: No they will be invited to the days by Stuart Dixon and assessed alongside everyone else. There are no guarantees that they will be selected as everyone begins the sessions as equals
Q3. Can a parent nominate me?
A3. Nominations from parents are not acceptable, only from coaches who know the quality of the player involved and whether he is outstanding or not. Understandably, parents tend not to be totally objective.
Q4. What if my teacher or coach forgot to nominate me on time, can I just turn up?
A4. It is not enough to just turn up on the day (you must be nominated by your club or school coach) because it puts pressure on our preparations. Imagine catering for a party for 10 people and each of them unexpectedly bringing a friend!
Q5. Can I get selected if I missed the trials for some reason e.g. holiday or injury?
A5. We have a number of players every year who miss the trials through no fault of their own. Previously we have invited the player for a trial period. This has been unsatisfactory because of the numbers involved and the potentially demoralising experience of saying to a player that he is not good enough. An alternative would be to have another assessment day, but where do we stop, if players miss this one as well? If this happens at U14 level and we know you because you were in the U13 SOR, your case will be considered. If you impressed the year before, you might well get selected even though you missed the trial. There will be opportunities to gain selection for your district and the coaching staff can assess you within that process. Finally, there is always another opportunity next year.
Yorkshire CB Schools of Rugby (SoR)
The CB Schools of Rugby were created as part of the Age Grade Rugby Review when it was approved by the RFU Council in April 2006. The SoR programme aims to identify and develop young players and athletes who have the potential to play at the elite levels of the game in England.
It provides a route for players into the England Rugby Academy system through the Junior Development Squad (JDS). The SoR provides an opportunity to identify emerging talent, particularly at ages 14-16 years, from CB squads and an exit route for those players who do not continue to meet the SoR criteria.
The focus of the SoR is to develop core technical skills together with tactical appreciation of the game. Players will also be educated on the key lifestyle, fitness and mental components which will help them reach the highest levels of performance.
The programme also provides opportunities to identify and develop talented coaches within each Constituent Body. Schools of Rugby Managers liaise closely with the Coach Development Officer and the CB’s Coaching Development Committee to appoint coaches who fulfil the required criteria.
The Administrator is Stuart Dixon. Stuart is the first point of contact for players, their parents and their school or club representative. The prime method of communicating to players, schools, clubs and representative squad officials is by email. Stuart’s email address is stuartdixon@theRFU.com. Announcements will also be made periodically on this webpage
