Yorkshire V Lancashire
Yorkshire was left to rue two excellent missed opportunities to win the game late on. With pressure building they twice created try scoring moves but the Lancashire scrambling defence held out.
In what was a typical Roses clash, the game started very tight with both teams looking to gain the ascendancy up front. Yorkshire’s defence held firm early on and they soon started to dominate upfront especially in the scrum. However, Yorkshire’s line out failed to function throughout the first half and god territory gained was soon spoilt.
It was Lancashire that opened the scoring with a penalty, when Yorkshire conceded a penalty for not rolling away at a ruck. Soon after Lancashire conceded a kickable penalty but unfortunately, Hainsworth pulled his kick wide.
Yorkshire on the attack then made had a great opportunity when the impressive Forbes playing at 8 broke the gain line off the base and rampaged 25 metres, with the ball quickly recycled Hainsworth at 10 put in a superb chip only for Fairclough at 12 to be held up over the line.
Then came the only try of the match when Lancashire, maintaining good phase possession, worked a simple move which saw their 12 ghost through the Yorkshire centres. Once in behind the defence and the damage done they quickly recycled and finished the move. The Lancashire 10 and captain added the extras.
Half time 0 – 10
Yorkshire made a change at hooker at half time, and clearly the coaching staff has insisted on patience when the ball was in hand. Yorkshire quickly got into their stride and started to string phases together. The game suddenly became more intense and it was the pace of the game that brought about a penalty to Yorkshire when Lancashire was caught off side in midfield. Hainsworth duly opened Yorkshire’s account at last.
With the game evenly poised Lancashire made a great break down the right only to see it spoilt by a knock on within ten metres of the line. Hainsworth then again added a penalty as Lancashire was once again spoiling at the ruck. The referee was inevitably left with no option but to send the Lancashire centre to the bin.
With Yorkshire now pushing hard for the win and Lancs working hard to hold out the game became very tense. Any possession Lancashire had was soon seen kicked deep into Yorkshire’s 22 with a solid wall of chasers following up every time.
With the game reaching its conclusion and with the one man advantage it was Yorkshire who finished very strong and the two clear cut chances were then created. Hainsworth at fly half made a great break and drew Heylings into the move, great pace saw the Yorkshire winger get within 5 of the line, at the crucial moment the Lancashire fullback tackled Heylings, however, he managed to get his pass away to Hainsworth who had tracked his team mate. Unfortunately, he couldn’t hold onto the pass. On the other flank Hammersley, who looked very assured at fullback made a darting break up the blind, evading two tackles; he was finally dragged down 10 metres out. The Yorkshire pack flooding forward then picked and went with the line at their mercy but chose the wrong option by going blind with acres of space the other way. The desperate defence pushed the attack into touch.
The final whistle blew very much to the delight of the travelling support. The home team looked dejected knowing that today the red rose prevailed and take the bragging rights for the year.
An excellent occasion was finished off with a traditional Yorkshire meal being served in Heath club house.
Many thanks to all involved for making this a memorable day.

Cheshire 25 - 8 Yorkshire
Yorkshire returned from Cheshire winless despite having the lion’s share of possession.
With the wind in their backs playing down a gentle slope Yorkshire failed to capitalise with plenty of ball and were punished by a charged up Cheshire team who made the most of some poor kicking and the inability of the Yorkshire team to retain possession out wide to run in two tries before half time. Yorkshire at last put some phases together and came away with a penalty converted by Hammersley. Cheshire led 15-3 at the break.
Yorkshire rang the changes at half time and some harsh words from the coaching team ensured that the visitors came out fired up for the second half.
However, it was Cheshire who seized the initiative with a charge down off the base of a scrum to score in the corner. With Yorkshire in slight disarray Cheshire again gained possession and with full confidence started to off load in the tackle and they eventually bundled over for a fourth try.
Yorkshire then made further changes which kick started some far better play, committing players to the breakdown at last and securing several phases. Cheshire struggled under the pressure and after consecutive penalties, Yorkshire kicked to the corner. Off the line out Yorkshire caught and drove with Captain Hugo Govett scoring the try. The try was unconverted.
At 25-8 the scoring finished but Yorkshire had plenty of pressure in the second half, they will rue the fact that they never played with the same passion and commitment in the first half as the result for sure would have been different.
Yorkshire now play Lancashire at home on 31st October at Heath RFC.
Many thanks to Sandbach and Cheshire RFU for their excellent hospitality.
Yorkshire U18s would like to announce their squad for Sunday 10th October, Cheshire away at Sandbach 2.30pm. Congratulations to those selected and to Hugo Govett who will captain the team.

Northumberland 0 - 41 Yorkshire
Yorkshire U18s returned from Morpeth with a decent win under their belts as they condemned the home side to a 41-0 defeat. Yorkshire looked to have the upper hand from the start with the front row of Bergmanas, Cole and Tamanis putting the pressure on in the opening few scrums. Unable to cope, the home side collapsed repeatedly but the refereeing pinged the Yorkshire lads instead. The penalty count rapidly rose to 9-0 against Yorkshire in the opening fifteen minutes, setting the tone for the first half.
Yorkshire finally got a foothold with a couple of excellent lineouts which were driven deep into Northumberland territory, making it clear to all that they were the dominant pack. Quick ball put through hands then saw Ben Fairlcough over for the opening score, Hainsworth duly adding the extras.
The lead was extended shortly afterwards as Harry Cody-Owen emerged through a sea of bodies to crash over for a try. Half time score 12-0.
After the restart Yorkshire began to cut loose as a more even contest was allowed up front. Cody-Owen went over for his second with Hainsworth converting for a 19-0 lead. Yorkshire were now on the front foot and the rugby began to flow with Masterson, Heylings and and Wood all becoming more prominent in attack. However several excellent forays were spoiled by lack of composure at key moments.
Masterson did get the score moving again though after an excellent burst down the right wing. Yorkshire rang the changes getting everyone involved. The forwards then decided to get in on the action and the effervescent Danny Casson (on for Cody-Owen) crashed over for a well worked try that flowed through several hands.
The visitors were now in the ascendancy with lock Henry Forbes rampaging through the defence and linking with Heylings in the outside channel. Danny Wood then grabbed a deserved try which replacement fly-half Hammersley converted. Centre Ben Johnson then rounded off a fine second half performance with a try to make it 41-0 at the death.

28th Aug - Yorkshire 8 vs 9 Leinster Clubs
Yorkshire welcomed visitors Leinster Clubs (U18) to The Grammar School at Leeds on a blustery August afternoon. The four day tour to Ulster looked to have taken it’s toll as the Yorkshire boys began quite sluggishly. Early stages were fairly evenly contested but the weather and the referee’s whistle hampered any real flow.
Leinster could have opened the scoring but the normally reliable Simon Hammersley missed two early penalties. Further errors crept into the Yorkshire game denying them any fluency.
Joe Allot took over the kicking duties but he was unable to get the score board moving either.
The sides turnover around without any score having come. Leinster then pressed hard into home territory in the 2nd half and Jonathan Foster was shown a yellow card for an infringement at the breakdown. Leinster slotted the ensuing penalty and folled up with another soon after for a 6-0 lead.
Yorkshire rang the changes and Will Heylings added some much needed spark in attack. Callum Irvine finally got the home side on the board with a penalty kick. Yorkshire were finally kicking into action and a lineout yielded quick ball which was spun wide for Heylings to feed Irvine who crashed over in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful but Yorkshire now had an 8-6 lead.
The lead was short-lived as Leinster pressed back and Yorkshire we caught marginally off side 10 metres inside the Leinster half. The penalty however was awarded inside the Yorkshire half the Leinster fly-half nailed a great kick.
Yorkshire kept the ball for the remaining three minutes and pushed hard for a winner. A kickable penalty was spurned in pursuit of a greater score but Leinster hung on to win 9-8.
Many thanks to all involved at The Grammar School at Leeds for their excellent hospitality.

Match Report
Ulster Schools 48 Yorkshire 7
A very impressive Ulster Schools side proved too strong for Yorkshire as they ran out 48-7 winners in a well contested game. The scoreline, while not reflecting how well Yorkshire played, did say a lot about Ulster's preparation. This was Yorkshire's first game of the season while Ulster were fresh from victory at the pre-season tournament at Saracens.
Ulster started the game strongly and opened the scoring with an early penalty following a ruck infringement. However Yorkshire responded and dominated much of the possession and territory for the first half. They produced some incisive attacking rugby but were met by a stout Ulster resistance.
The home side were clinical in their game and three forays into the Yorkshire 22 yielded three tries, aided by some slack defence from the Yorkshire midfield. Ulster sat on a comfortable 24-0 lead at halftime.
A strong half-time team talk seemed to have the desired impact as Yorkshire sparked into life and bagged an early try. Quick hands and incisive play put Masterson into space on the right wing. His sharp sidestep saw him inside the final defender and under the posts. 16-year old Callum Irvine slotted the easy conversion.
Yorkshire had opportunties to bring the score closer but lack of composure was to prove costly on several occassions. The visitors created several scoring chances but lacked the precision of their opponents.
Ulster struck decisively in the final 20 minutes as Yorkshire lost their shape and extended their lead, including two tries in the final three minutes. Final score Ulster Schools 48 Yorkshire 7.
Press Release
Irish Challenge for Yorkshire 18s
Yorkshire Under 18s head across the Irish Sea on Sunday 22nd of August at the start of a three match challenge against Irish provincial sides. From a base at the famous Campbell College, Yorkshire will take on Ulster Schools (23rd) and then Ulster Clubs (25th). The squad then returns home to face the challenge of the visiting Leinster Clubs’ side at The Grammar School at Leeds on Saturday 28th.
The tour builds on the success of last year’s visit to Ireland and reflects the strengthening bond between the sides. In August 2009 Yorkshire travelled to Belfast to play Ulster Schools and then onto Navan RFC to face Leinster Clubs.
The current 30 player squad is comprised of two complete starting XV’s and has been assembled after a rigorous selection process lead by Chairman Andy Rickard. The diverse squad includes 6 players who have represented England at U16 level as well as players who will don a Yorkshire shirt for the very first time.
“Getting away with the squad is so valuable in terms of our preparation” commented chairman Andy Rickard “and we want to give every player the best chance of going on to North of England and ultimately the chance to represent the England U18 counties side”.
“The players are also massively excited about playing against two Irish provinces that have achieved Heineken Cup glory with their senior sides”
Yorkshire will not be the only visitors to Belfast next week though; Lancashire U18s are staying at Campbell College as well although the annual “Roses” game will keep until the autumn. Further excitement has been generated with the news that the Irish senior squad are also training at the college early next week.
Yorkshire’s inter-county programme then kicks off with a visit to Northumberland on 26th of September followed by a trip to Cheshire on the 10th of October. The clash with Lancashire takes place in Yorkshire on the 31st of October.

Ireland Squad 2010
The selectors and coaches would like to announce the following squad for Ireland 2010. We spent a considerable amount of time discussing the selections made over the three weeks. Can I congratulate those of you selected. For those U16s not selected we recommend that you trial for Yorkshire U17 through the district programme with the aim of playing Yorkshire U18s the following season. For the U17s not selected we recommend that you work hard throughout next season and then trial for Yorkshire U19s. Players not selected at this point could of course be called into the squad in the event of injuries to squad players.
The process of trialling and selection this year was particularly difficult due the depth of quality in the development squad, but unfortunately, we cannot select you all. Once again I thank you and your parents for your commitment to the programme.
Further tour details will be sent via email.

Development Squad 2010/11
Congratulations to the following players who have been selected for the Yorkshire U18 development squad 2010/11. The selectors have watched Yorkshire U16 play four matches, Yorkshire U17 play four matches and attended both the U16 Inter District Festival and Late Entrant Trial. Many miles have been covered by these volunteers over the last four months. In total we have seen in excess of 200 players.
For those of you who have not been selected please do not see this as the end of your opportunity to represent Yorkshire. Current U16 players will through the District programme be able to trial for Yorkshire U17s in Sept/Oct 2010 and current U17 players will be able to trial for Yorkshire U19s in the future.
For those selected, training will be held at Woodhouse Grove School (Apperley Bridge, Bradford BD10 0NR) on Friday 14th, 21st, 28 May, meet at 6pm ready for a 6.30pm start.
It is the intention to cut the squad after the 1st session and again after the 3rd session.
Thirty players will be carried forward to the August 15th training session and the tour to Ireland 22nd – 26th August. It is intended that these thirty players will then make up the Yorkshire U18 squad for 2010/11 season for the County Programme.
It has yet to be confirmed, but it is hoped that there will be a North of England U18 squad and England U18 squad specifically for players playing County Rugby in the 2010/11 season. The RFU will also run a totally separate ‘Elite’ U18 squad of 26 players.
The first session will be a ‘full on’ training session so please come prepared for this. It is likely that the ground will be firm and it is therefore important that you have appropriate boots. Gum shields are compulsory and also bring a full water bottle. As with all training sessions and matches medical support will be present.
It is extremely important that, at the first training session, you let me know if you are unable to attend the August training date or the tour to Ireland.
Please bring with to the first training session a fully completed ‘Player registration and information’ form. This can be downloaded from this site, by going back to the U18 menu and clicking the ‘Player registration and information form’ tab. All players must complete and submit if they have not already done so. You may if you wish send this to me prior to the first training session.
If you are selected to the final 30 then you will need to consider raising the necessary funds to pay for the tour and your Yorkshire RFU kit. (Players who represented Yorkshire U18 last season need not purchase the kit again) The cost for the tour and kit at the present time is £250. In previous seasons we have encouraged all players to go out and raise this money by asking individuals and businesses to sponsor them. (A tour programme will be produced to help you raise funds) This has proved very successful. If you or your parents know of anyone who would like to sponsor the U18 team then please do let me know. The intention is that the onus is on the player to raise the money and not rely on the ‘Bank of mum & dad’!
If you require any further information then please do contact me.

Yorkshire U18 development squad will be announced on Monday 3rd May via this webpage. All selected players will be expected to attend all three training sessions in May and bring a completed Player Registration and Information sheet. (Downloadable from this site)
See Programme 2010/11 for further details of times/venues etc.
Yorkshire U18 Late Entrant Trial for Season 2010-11
The late entrant trial for Yorkshire U18s will be on Wednesday 28th April 2010 at 6pm. Venue to be confirmed upon email receipt of nominations.
Nominations and questions need to be sent to Andrew Rickard andrewrickard67@hotmail.com
Nominations need to be received from the Senior Chairman or Chairman of Junior Rugby from Clubs and Heads of PE/Rugby Masters from Schools. Nominations will close on Sunday 25th April.
From January to April a team of selectors watch many matches to select players to be invited into the Yorkshire U18 development squad of approx. 60 players. After three training sessions in May the squad will be cut to 30 players who will then make up the Yorkshire U18 squad. It is anticipated that the squad will travel to Ulster to play 2 matches 22nd – 26th August prior to the start of the County programme. Players will be expected to raise funds towards the cost of the trip.
All players wishing to represent Yorkshire U18 must be 16 or 17 years of age on the 31st August of that season. Now back to school years, essentially it for players who will be in Y11 or Y12 at School of the new 2010-2011 academic year.
Please do not nominate players who have already been seen through the following 4 pathways:
1 - If you played for Yorkshire U18 a year young as an U17 you get invited into the development squad.
2 - The selectors will watch all players who represent Yorkshire U17.
3 - The selectors will watch all players who represent Yorkshire U16 in the post xmas programme. Those U16 players who played for Yorkshire in the pre xmas programme and have been selected to represent England will go automatically into the development squad.
4 - The selectors will watch the end of season U16 district festival.
Essentially, the late entrant trial is for players who might have trialled for Yorkshire U17 and U16 but were unsuccessful but have developed throughout the season, or for new players into Yorkshire or players who might have missed out due to injury. Without doubt there will be players who have improved significantly throughout the season. The Chairman and Head of PE must feel that the player is of the appropriate standard before nominating.
Yorkshire 2010 squad selection
Yorkshire U18 selectors will travel to Bangor in North Wales to watch Yorkshire U17 take on North Wales Academy U18 team. This is the first of 4 five games that the U17s play this season. Selectors will also watch Yorkshire U16 play four matches and then select at a late entrant trial in April. All details for the U18 programme can be found on the U18 programme link. Any questions then please contact andrewrickard67@hotmail.com . For all Yorkshire U17 and U16 news click on their web pages.

Yorkshire 0 - 22 Lancashire
Yorkshire U18s finished their season on a disappointing note as they succumbed to a strong Lancashire side, featuring their academy players.
The team arrived at Northwich RUFC into very heavy rain with the ground staff working hard to remove surface water from the pitch. Come kick off at 11.30 the rain had stopped but a strong wind blew in Yorkshire’s favour. Early phases of the game were even as both sides looked to settle into their rhythm but the greasy ball and strong wind were not conducive to flowing rugby. Both sides failed to convert early penalty kicks at goal before Lancashire eventually opened the scoring with a kick in the 19th minute.
The Yorkshire pack was performing well but their scrummaging was hampered by refereeing interpretation which saw them penalised several times on the engagement.
Yorkshire enjoyed several forays into Lancashire territory but were unable to find a decisive breakthrough despite some outstanding work in the loose from Kitson and Rogers. The strengthening wind now began to have a serious bearing on the game as one Lancashire clearance sailed back over the head of their fly half.
In the dying moments of the Yorkshire was awarded another shot at goal but fly-half Lound’s kick struck the upright leaving it 3-0 at the break.
It was clear that the white rose side was going to struggle into the second half gale as evidenced by the build up to their opening try. The referee again penalised the Yorkshire scrum inside the Lancashire 22. Lancashire then used the wind to kick the ball 80 metres down field; the ensuing phase of play saw centre Sam Russell crash over for a try.
Another try followed soon after from Tom Webb and with Redfern adding the conversion the lead extended to 15-0. Yorkshire now faced a near impossible task to recover. However the introduction of prop Mike Bradshaw added some “go forward” but Lancashire defended well and used the wind to keep Yorkshire pinned deep in their own half.
The final try was scored by a Yorkshireman albeit one in a Lancashire shirt – hooker Scott Briggs gratefully scoring under the posts making the conversion a formality. Final score 22-0.
Congratulations to Lancashire on a deserved victory. Thank you to host club Northwich and to the match officials.
Well done to the Yorkshire lads who showed they know the value of wearing the white rose. Their bloodied and muddied faces bore testament to players who put their bodies on the line for their county. No more could be asked of them.
The squad to play Lancashire on Sunday 1st November at Northwich RFC 11.30am has been announced. Yorkshire will be aiming to make it 3 out of 3 after beating both Cumbria 15 - 14 and Cheshire 33 - 12.

Yorkshire 33 - 12 Cheshire
Five unanswered tries saw Yorkshire Under 18’s comfortably home in their clash with Cheshire at Scarborough RUFC. This was the first representative game at Silver Royd, the new home for Scarborough rugby, and was an occasion enjoyed by a large, appreciative audience.
The home club had provided a magnificent venue that made the journey to the East Yorkshire worthwhile for both sides. Pre-match preparations for Yorkshire were again hampered by withdrawals including the loss of hooker Sam Cruise with illness on the morning of the game.
Skipper Sam Harrison lead his troops onto the first team pitch, buffeted by a strong wind which was pushing frequent showers into the North Sea. Yorkshire got off to the worst start though as hooker Sam Kerry was forced off after 2 minutes with an elbow injury meaning an early debut for Ben Weaving. The early clashes were even but the breakthrough came in the 9th minute when scrum half Isaac Green’s sniping break caught the Cheshire cover flat-footed. He linked with winger Struan Connor to inject further pace before Connor returned the ball for Green to mark his debut with a fine try. Greg Lound eagerly accepted the extras with his conversion.
The home side were now on the front foot and the effervescent Curtis Wilson finished in the left corner with a fine try after some neat interplay with the lively Connor. Lound again added the extra two for a 14-0 lead.
Cheshire did apply some pressure into home territory and were rewarded with a penalty which Tom Bills converted but the relief was only temporary as Yorkshire piled the pressure back on. It was now the turn of the forwards as tight-head Tom Bagnall nailed a try to stretch Yorkshire out to 19-3.
The first half was almost over but the dominant side now found themselves getting on the receiving end of the referee’s whistle and another penalty made it 19-6. Tom Bagnall was then harshly sin-binned at the death allowing Cheshire to convert another kick for a 19-9 scoreline at the break. It’s fair to say the 10 point lead didn’t reflect Yorkshire’s first half dominance but probably reflected the penalty count.
Action resumed with Yorkshire applying the tourniquet again and allowing Cheshire very little comfort. Scrum half Isaac Green, enjoying a dream debut, cleverly hoisted a box kick that bobbled into touch just five metres short of the line. The visitor’s made a mess of the lineout and Henry Forbes reacted sharply to bag a try.
Cheshire continued to seek a comeback but their labour was thwarted by a mean defence although one passage saw Forbes sent to the bin by the referee who adjudged his efforts to be illegal. Three points meant Cheshire maintained some hope at 26-12.
However, replacement wimger Jack Moon snuffed out any lingering flicker of hope with a wonderfully taken solo effort which saw him step and glide around several would-be tacklers for a classy try. Lound added the extras again for a 33-12 lead.
Yorkshire pushed forward in the dying moments and looked certain to score with a well worked overlap but the ball was spilt just as the line offered itself up. The referee’s whistle brought the end to a fine game which saw Yorkshire register five unanswered tries. Cheshire, to their credit, continued to play positively but were repeatedly unable to break a resolute defence.
Thanks to referee Paul Fincken and his officials.
Special thanks to Scarborough rugby club for their outstanding hospitality and to their President Mr J. Guthrie for his generous sponsorship of the game.
Yorkshire play Lancashire in their final match on Sunday 1st November at Northwich RFC 11.30am kick off.
Yorkshire 15 - 14 Cumbria
Yorkshire Under 18’s had to produce a 2nd half fight to see off a determined challenge from Cumbria Under 18’s at Skipton RFC. The home side’s preparations had been hampered by withdrawals due to injuries and academy demands. The squad assembled early at Skipton for a light training session before lunch. Pre-match warm up was then interrupted as the Cumbrian squad was delayed due to transport difficulties.
Following the delayed kick off Yorkshire started brightly and fly-half Ed Hainsworth gratefully slotted an early penalty chance for a 3-0 lead. Cumbria were put under pressure by several drives deep into their territory and efforts to slow the ball down saw 2nd row Adam Birkett sent to the bin for 10 minutes. Sensing the real opportunity for points the home side pressed forward with skipper Sam Cruise running at the heart of a desperate defence only for the desperate defence to snuff out the attack in the right corner.
The breakthrough came moments later though as turnover over ball was spun up the left wing with Alex Masteson finishing off under the posts. Ed Hainsworth added the straightforward conversion to give Yorkshire a 10-0 lead.
Cumbria missed an immediate chance to get off the mark as scrum half Lawless was just wide with a penalty effort. Yorkshire looked in control though with No.8 Richard Skowronek taking them strongly forward on several occasions. However the game turned as the referee again showed yellow, this time to Yorkshire Lock Henry Forbes. Yorkshire dug deep to defend as Cumbria poured forward and successfully defended for the 10 minutes. However the pressure eventually told as Yorkshire skipper Sam Cruise was sin binned just after Forbes returned. A series of line outs eventually bore fruit as Cumbria hooker Prichard evaded tackles to crash in behind the posts. The straightforward conversion took the score to 10-7 at the break.
Cumbria started strongly after the break and scored another try just 3 minutes in to take a 14-10 lead. Yorkshire looked stunned as Cumbria were now in control of the game. Yorkshire showed great spirit though and fought back with a well taken try finished in the right corner by Curtis Wilson. Hainsworth was unable to land the conversion but Yorkshire now had a slender 15-14 lead with 20 minutes still on the clock.
Both sides struggled to find a further decisive score although Cumbria came close with a couple of speculative drop goals. Yorkshire did manage to hold on for the win though. The game was far from a classic but credit to both sides for their endeavour in a game that could have gone either way. The Yorkshire lads showed great spirit when you remember that they were reduced to 14 for twenty minutes due to the yellow cards.
Special thanks to Skipton RUFC for their superb hospitality. Thanks also to referee Colin Burrell and his officials.

Five in Conference Squad
Five Yorkshire U18 players have been named in the England Conference squad for the coming season. Dominic Barrow, Chris Walker, George Ford, Chris Gemmell and Nathan Morris will all be involved in the forthcoming England matches against the merged academy sides. Christian Georgiou will go straight to the North Division trial having played for the North a year young. We would like to wish all 6 players the best of luck for the forthcoming season.
Yorkshire 0 - 10 NLD
Yorkshire U18 finished their preparations for the County programme with a 0 -10 loss at Thornensians RFC against NLD. A competitive game which saw Yorkshire have the bulk of the posession throughout the match. However, some poor defensive kicking allowed NLD to counter and score two well executed tries. The Yorkshire pack continually supplied some very good ball but the backs were a little lateral in their running lines and NLD managed time after time to keep Yorkshire out. Yorkshire eventually grounded the ball off an excellent catch and drive lineout only to be ruled out due to a knock on on the NLD line. The Yorkshire management were delighted with the run out and will now convene before announcing the 23 player squad to play Cumbria on Sunday 27th September at Skipton RFC. Many thanks to Thornensians for host the match and providing such excellent facilities.

Ireland Tour
The 2009 squad have just returned from their tour to Ireland. This was an excellent opportunity for all 28 players to start a game and make their bid for a starting place in the forthcoming county programme. The squad endured two hard matches against Ulster Schools and Leinster Clubs who were both preparing for their Inter Provincial Champs.
Ulster Schools 23 - 15 Yorkshire U18
Leinster Clubs 18 - 24 Yorkshire U18
See the Ireland Tour page for full reports and photos.
England U18s - South Africa Tour
Congratulations to Yorkshire's Dom Barrow who has just returned from South Africa where he featured in two of England's tour matches in South Africa. See www.rfu.com for match reports.
Squad Training 2
The second training session at Pontefract provided the squad with an excellent opportunity to further develop the unit skills and then test them against the Yorkshrie Terriers U19s. The coaching staff were delighted with the progress being made but are aware of the amount of hard work still to be done. The lads then collected their tour kit after the session. Special thanks to Mrs Williams and Mrs Bagnall who had donated a mountain of food to sell and organised the raffle. Thanks also to Pontefract RFC for hosting the two sessions. We are now just two months away from the tour to Ireland and the running total to date is £8500 sponsorship. This is a most fantastic achievement on behalf of everyone. Many thanks.
Squad training
All 32 selected players attended the first training session on the 5th June at Pontefract RUFC. Despite the horrendous weather the players worked hard and now look forward to the second session on the 19th June at the same venue. This will be an excellent occasion as the squad will be training with the Yorkshire Terriers who are preparing for their 3 week summer tour to New Zealand. For more details follow this link.
Ireland Tour 2009
Thirty players and ten staff will travel off to Ireland this August to play against Leinster Clubs and Ulster Schools. More details can be found on the Ireland Tour page.
Yorkshire U18 Squad 2009/10
The squad for the season has been announced and can be viewed on the 2009/10 squad page. 32 players have been named. Congratulations to those who have been selected. Cutting the squad down was a very difficult task due to the amount of very good players on display at the three training sessions.
U18 Development Squad
The Yorkshire U18 development squad for 2009/10 season trained for the first time on Friday 1st May at Woodhouse Grove School. The management and coaches are very excited about the quality of the squad. There are two further training sessions on 8th & 15th May before the squad is cut to 30 to tour Ireland at the end of August. See the "Ireland Tour" page for more details.
