The Under 16 Roses Game 2010
What a difference a week makes. Yorkshire met Lancashire at Woodhouse Grove School, Bradford in the first game of the First Festival of the 2010 season. The changes in the team were amazing after last week. Peter Birkett of Huddersfield GS and Heath started at scrum half, Jack Barnard at 7 of Harrogate GS and Club had recovered from injury and Robert Rekis 14, Matthew Gunnee 12 and Dan Grange 8 all of Ilkley GS and Ilkley Club were available and they provide the glue to enable the team to gel and play to its strength for the full game.
In the first minute of play Jack Barnard in his keeness gave away a penalty on the Yorkshire 22 in front of the goal which Alistair Addy 10 of Myerscough College duly converted 3-0 to Lancashire. 4 minutes later Tom Brown the Yorkshire 10 of Sedbergh repeated the task to even the score 3-3. On 6 minutes Addy made it 6-3 and after more nip and tuck on 18 minutes Brown evened it up 6-6. The first try came 3 minutes later when Sam Pollard 13 of Crossley Heath and Heath Club set up Robert Rekis 14 to score the opening try, which Tom Brown converted to take the score to 13-6 to Yorkshire. On 24 minutes Yorkshire conceded a further penalty which Addy converted to reduce the deficit in the score to 13-9 . Four minutes later the next try was scored by Dan Grange playing at 8. Peter Birkett 9 of Huddersfield GS fed him as he broke from a scrum on the Lancashire 22 ; Dan brushed aside the first tackler and carried two more over the line as he scored to make the score 18-9 to Yorkshire at half time.
The Victory was sealed in the second half by the 3 tries scored without any further response . On 41 minutes Jack Barnard at 7 of Harrogate GS and Club scored the first, which Sam Allen the replacement 10 of QEGS and Doncaster converted to make the score 25-9 to Yorkshire. Robert Rekis 14 scored a try in the corner out pacing the cover. The last try also scored by Robert to give him his hat trick. This was the best handling movement seen this year. From one wing to the other and back again the ball was kept alive by forwards and backs together until it returned to Rekis to bob it down for the try in the corner.
