Yorkshire kicked off their 2 match tour at Malone RFC against Ulster Schools U18s. Both sides were using the match as an opportunity to have a good look at their squads prior to Ulster playing in the Inter Provincial Champs and Yorkshire playing in the North County Champs.
After early pressure from the home side that saw Ulster go 3 – 0 up from an early penalty, Yorkshire enjoyed a sustained period of pressure. However, they were unable to execute from the excellent opportunities that arose. Ulster then broke the length of the field after the ball had broken loose from a ruck on their own line, several kicks up field resulted in the Ulster winger outpacing the despairing efforts of the Masterson.
Yorkshire then missed a penalty, but immediately converted the next to make the score 10 – 3.
Another error then led to Ulster scoring again when a loose box kick drifted in field for the Ulster backs to attack the undefended space. A poor chase then led to a scrambling defence desperately trying to stop the winger scoring in the corner.
3 – 15 half time
The second half started with Yorkshire on the front foot but were unable to convert a penalty from in front of the posts. The second half was rather a stop start affair with Ulster being penalised 13 times for constant infringements at the breakdown. However, the ref somehow allowed all 15 players to remain on the pitch. Ulster then capitalised on some poor tackling in the Yorkshire midfield when the Ulster 7 (man of the match) cut through and off loaded. The try was eventually scored in the far right corner despite some valiant defending. 3 – 20
Yorkshire then put together some good phases of sustained pressure which brought a good try from Lucock after some excellent forward inter-play. The conversion was missed. Straight after Yorkshire should have scored again on the left however the final pass went to ground. The introduction of Heylings then added pace to the midfield and a move deep finally ended with Masterson scoring under the posts. Hainsworth added the extras.
Yorkshire now with their tails up started to control the game. More composure at this point would have led to a Yorkshire victory but a lack of quality at the right time led to an Ulster penalty in front which was duly converted to make the final score 23 – 15 to Ulster.
With 2 penalties and 1 conversion missed alongside several excellent opportunities, Yorkshire will see this as a game that they certainly should have won.
After match formalities then took place with the exchanging of the normal regalia. Many thanks to Ulster Schools and especially John McKinney for arranging the fixture, and Malone RFC for providing such a wonderful surface and excellent facilities. Thanks also the Yorkshire parents who travelled to give their support.

Yorkshire kicked off their second tour match against Leinster Clubs at Navan RFC.
Early possession went to Leinster in the opening exchanges. Yorkshire then started to take control of the game showing good structure. However, it all became a bit too complicated in midfield which allowed Leinster possession. Yorkshire finally got flowing and an excellent move led to Connor making good ground but the ball was lost in contact.
Leinster then found their feet and made an excellent break through their 7 who ran off a pop ball at 10 and cut through the Yorkshire midfield to score by the posts. The extras were also added. 7 – 0
Yorkshire t hen missed a chance to get back n the match but the penalty kick was misses. The Yorkshire forwards then got some lineout possession and managed to plunge over from about ten metres out. Govett, Yorkshire’s captain picking up the score. The conversion knocked over by Hainsworth from out wide. 7 – 7
Both teams then exchanged penalties to make the half time score 10 – 10.
Yorkshire clearly fired up from the half time team talk showed great quality from the outset. An excellent kick from Hainsworth allowed Connor to gather but the ball was never grounded.
All the possession was now with Yorkshire in the Leinster 22, however, yet again the Leinster 7 broke through a tepid defence in midfield to create a great try with their winger out pacing the cover. 15 – 10. The first visit of Leinster in the Yorkshire half had resulted in a try.
Yorkshire then at last converted their possession in to points with second half substitute Wilson scoring a try to round off a good move. Hainsworth added the points to make it 15 – 17.
Yorkshire now leading were showing great control but unfortunately, were still unable to close the game out. Remarkably Leinster still came back at Yorkshire and late on they managed to break into the Yorkshire half and eventually scored a drop goal with only minutes remaining to take the lead at 18 – 17.
However, from the kick off Leinster knocked on and Yorkshire rumbled forward and with some excellent play from Armitage the backs moved it wide and Wilson picked up his second try in the corner. Hainsworth duly added the extras to make the score 24 – 18. A tense few minutes followed but Yorkshire held on for a deserved win.
After match formalities then took place with the exchanging of the normal regalia. Many thanks to Leinster Clubs and especially Pat Keena for arranging the fixture, and Navan RFC for providing such a wonderful surface and excellent facilities. Thanks also the Yorkshire parents who travelled to give their support.
The tour finished with a good old sing song on the bus on the two hour journey back to Belfast.

Yorkshire U18s have just returned from Ireland with a win and a loss from their two very competitive matches. Having worked very hard to raise the necessary sponsorship the squad headed off to Belfast. Their first match saw them go down to Ulster Schools 23- 15 at Malone RFC. Their second match saw then beat Leinster Clubs 18 - 24 at Navan RFC just North of Dublin. This was an ideal chance for the squad to bond and impress the coaches and chairman of selectors. (Full reports and photos to follow). Next up for Yorkshire U18 will be a training match against Notts, Lincs and Derby at Thornensians RFC. The team for their first County match against Cumbria will then be announced.
Yorkshire U18s will be touring Ireland this August. The selected squad will be playing against Ulster Schools and Leinster Clubs. The selected squad can be found on the 2009/10 Squad page.
