In Memory of Police Constable Mark John Woodhead M3 Sub-Division
Mark Woodhead was a serving police officer, an excellent rugby player and the youngest player to make 50 first team appearences for Coventry RFC.
Mark tragically died whilst on duty at Fletchamstead Highway Police Staion on 26th January 1992; he was 32.
To remember Mark, West Midlands Police RFC played a match at Coundon Road against Mark's junior club, Barkers Butts RFC, for a trophy made in his memory. The match ball was signed by all the players and mounted; it is still on display today in the trophy cabinet at Little Park Street Police Station. Barkers Butts won the match and the trophy went to their cabinet. Each year afterwards, the fixture was played at Barkers Butts' ground at the end of the season beteen their 'Tanners' XV and West Midlands Police RFC (Coventry XV) for the same memorial trophy, which Coventry Police have never won. The fixture is still being played and the M Div are hoping for a first victory next season.
In addition to the annual fixture between Coventry Police and Barkers Butts, there is another Mark Woodhead Trophy. The tournament is between all the different 'Extras' sides of West Midlands Police. The 'D' Division retained the trophy at the end of 2007/2008 season, coming from behind to beat the 'M' in a memorable final. The same thing nearly happened again this year. The M were 20-10 up at half time and threw it all away. The D leveled it 20-20 with minutes to spare. The ref asked the officials to decide what should happen in the event of a draw and suddenly the D gave away an easy penalty in front of the posts in their own 22. Karl Mackley slotted the ball between the sticks, the D fought back but time was against the and the M dug in the win the trophy for the first time since 1995.
