CROATIA. Four days, two matches |
Split |
|
The new season was quick to start but unfortunately cry-offs and the extreme winter weather took its toll. All our fixtures and results are viewable by clicking on the 2009/2010 season tab on the menu bar to the left of the screen. Alternatively click on the events tab. Unfortunately we've had a disappointing start to the season with an unusually high amount of matches cancelled due to cry-offs so far this season. Games were cancelled by Northamptonshire Police, Derbyshire Police, British Transport Police and RAF Shawbury. Unfortunately it's the nature of mid-week rugby between organisations that must put operational requirements first. We have unfortunately cried off on Walsall and Hereford Pilgrims; hopefully we've seen the worst of it and the season can now get going.
West Midlands Police RFC consists of a 1st XV, four 'Extras' sides, a Veterans XV called 'Old Bill', a 7's side and we now have a Women's XV for the first time. The clubs members are Police Officers and Police Staff from all corners of the Force area which stretches from the Black Country in the west, to Coventry in the east; and Sutton Coldfield in the north to Solihull in the south.
The 1stXV, Old Bill, Women and the F Division teams play their home games at West Midlands Police Training Centre, Sports & Social Club, known as 'Tally Ho!', which is on Pershore Road in Edgbaston. For more information about each team, or Tally Ho! itself, click the menu on the left. Coventry Police will be playing their home games this season at www.broadstreet-rugby.co.uk
Until the mid 1990s West Mids played in the Saturday leagues, but numbers started to dwindle due to the demands of modern operational policing conflicting with force sport. Also, players were becoming semi-professional in the new era of rugby at clubs such as Mosely, Coventry and Birmingham/Solihull and they were reluctant to play for the force at weekends.
A decision was made for the 1stXV to only play midweek matches against other Police Forces in the Police Service U.K Rugby Union Tournament (P.S.U.K), which we won in 2009 by beating Gwent and in 2000, beating the R.U.C. Last season saw a professional approach in preparation for the PSUK and we were unbeaten all season. Our scalps included Pilgrims, R.A.F (Western Wolves), R.A.F (Veteran Vultures), previous cup holders Dyfed Powis Police and Devon & Cornwall Police. Our last game of the season was the PSUK Final on 15th April, when we beat Gwent Police 23-3 at Stourbridge RFC.
Our 'Extras' sides play each other for the Mark Woodhead Trophy every season, as well representative matches against neighbouring police forces and rugby clubs in their respective communities. The most active of all the teams in WMPRFC is the 'M' Division, better known as Coventry Police and the D Division are the serious tourists. The Black Country Police have made a come back and look promising to be the team of the season.
