PRESIDENTS GAME
PRESIDENTS MEN 32 V 28 CAPTAINS CHOICE
Two evenly matched teams contested this years Presidents game on what proved to be the wettest Saturday of the season so far. With an emphasis on open play, both teams produced some good rugby that bodes well for the forthcoming season.
|
|
WATH 10 v 19 TUPTON
Tupton began their competitive season with a hard fought win against a determined Wath side.
The first half was a rather disjointed affair with both sides struggling to put together some coherent rugby. Simon Langley opened the scoring following a strong surge through the middle of the park, Brett Marriott converted.
The second half saw Tupton improve considerably with Mark Emmerson scoring a fine try that Brett Marriott converting. The final try of the afternoon was perhaps the most spectacular with Brett Marriott kicking ahead from inside his own half and then outrunning the Wath defence.

Tupton 38 v 5 Chesterfield 23rd September 2006
Tupton entertained near rivals Chesterfield in the first game of the new league season, although the visitors received less than a neighbourly welcome whilst being dispatched by the men from the Rec.
The first half saw Chesterfield start brightly to win a number of scrums as they pressed for advantage but it was Tupton who opened the scoring with a Brignull try scored form the base of a ruck. Tupton went further ahead with a Marriott penalty and, growing in confidence, they began to turn the attacking screw.
Wave after wave of aggressive forward play saw Tuptons more mobile pack move Chesterfield around as they began to leak points. Next, a well worked penalty move saw Kirk cross to score; Marriott converting.
At the start of the second half Tupton made a critical tactical replacement that saw hooker East join the party that fellow veterans Curry and Bulloch had already started. As the sun beat down and roared on by a healthy Recreation Ground crowd, Chesterfield crumbled as their line was crossed a further four times.
Marriott scored the first of a pair immediately after the restart only for Chesterfield to reply with a well worked try of their own that saw an overlap created out wide for the winger to score.
Tupton then took the initiative up front with a second try from Kirk completing the scoring. Marriott weighed in with a second penalty and a conversion.
This match was an excellent advert for local rugby with both teams giving their all. On another day the result might have gone the other way but for now, Tupton rightly rejoice in a very special victory.
Meden Vale 14 v 17 Tupton 30th September 2006
Tupton maintained their perfect start to the season with a hard fought win at Meden Vale.
The hosts took advantage of a disrupted scrum to open the scoring with a converted try under the posts. Tupton replied immediately with a “Marriott special” – a kick and chase to level the score. Dean White then added a second try rolling of the front of a lineout to score in the corner.
Tupton scored again early in the second half with Ant Marriott receiving a clinical pass after a break by fly-half Lee.
Meden Vale toiled in vain for the remainder of the game but could only manage one score that gave the result a rather flattering look come full time.
Tupton 1st XV 21 v 10 Skegness 1st XV 7th October 2006
Tupton progressed to the second round of the National Cup with a fine win over the seasiders.
The game was close throughout, Tupton scoring first through a fine backs move started by Ben Gill and finished by Brett Marriott.
Marriott scored again before half time to give the hosts a lead of 14 - 10 at the break.
In the second half Tupton toiled against a strong wind and an increasingly desperate Skegness side and it was with some relief that Dean White broke off the back of a line out to outpace the defence and score under the posts.
Tupton 1st XV 15 v 23 Rolls Royce 14th October 2006
Tuptons excellent start to the season came to an end following a lacklustre display against the visitors from Derby.
A poor first half saw Royce lead by 17 points at the break and although the hosts improved immensely in the second half to close the gap to five points through tries by Brignull and Burton and a penalty and conversion by Lee Marriott, it was never quite enough to turn the game around.
Worksop 1st XV 28 v 3 Tupton 1st XV 28th October 2006
Tuptons run in the EDF National Cup came to an end at Worksop despite a spirited display against higher league opponents
Worksop scored four well executed tries, two in each half although the game remained closely competitive throughout.
Tuptons score came from a Marriott penalty.
Tupton 1st XV 20 v 33 Buxton 1st XV 4th November 2006
Tupton lost out to Buxton following five mad first half minutes when the visitors ran in three tries, two of which were converted.
Tupton began brightly and opened the scoring with a Lee Marriott try from their first attack. The game was then fairly evenly contested until midway through the first half when the two sides traded tries, Dave Brignull scoring for the home side, before Buxton turned the screw decisively to lead 26 – 10 at half time.
Tupton forced the game during the second half but were unable to convert pressure into the points they needed to take the game from Buxton, the only scores being a Steve Burton try converted by Marriott and a penalty.
Leesbrook 1st XV 17 v 21 Tupton 1st XV 11th October 2006
Tupton returned to winning ways with an excellent win in Derby. Playing with a strong wind at their backs Tupton opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a superb Mark Emmerson effort under the posts converted by Brett Marriot.
Marriott went over himself five minutes later following excellent backs play to score in the corner and followed up with an excellent conversion from the touch line.
The second half was keenly contested with Tupton having to deal with the strong wind. The game however was sealed when big hitting number eight Simon Langley snaffled up loose ball at the back of a Leesbrook line to charge over from twenty metres. Man of the match Brett Marriott converted and the game was Tuptons.
