Swaffham Under 10’s match reports
North Walsham Festival
25th March 2007
Thirteen players from Swaffham turned out to play in the sunshine of the 30th North Walsham Festival on Sunday.
Placed in a pool with West Norfolk, Wymondham and Norwich, the boys, who played their second festival in one week, were up against strong opposition.
With relative newcomers, Jack Dodsworth, Josh Panes and Nathan Sturman and with Alex Czarnowski and Sam Sayer back from injuries the team played well and produced some overall good rugby.
Scrum half Rory Saunders played less than a half when he came off injured against West Norfolk, a major nose bleed preventing him from returning.
With the squad constantly changing Swaffham continued to push hard and were eventually rewarded for their efforts with a try in the second half from prop Joe Furniss. The pack, consisting of Joe, Jared Milligan and Aubrey Grimes won all bar one of the scrums and pushed hard in the mauls.
Some fantastic defending by Edward O’Brien and Christopher Lloyd, together with Callum Robb and Sam Sayer prevented the final score increasing in West’s favour.
Final score 20 – 5 in West Norfolk’s favour.
The second match of the day was against Wymondham and it’s fair to say that the two teams were fairly evenly matched. The game was hard and the ball was equal in both halves of the pitch.
Wymondham led the first half 5 -0, clearly showing the strengthened defence of the Swaffham side.
The second half of the match was once again strong and the ball passed from side to side equally.
Despite some good tackling by Josh Panes and Aubrey Grimes in particular the match ended 15 – 0 to Wymondham.
The final match of the morning against a strong Norwich side allowed newcomers, Jack Dodsworth, Josh Panes and Nathan Sturman the opportunity to shine. Jack played in the pack with Josh and Nathan playing wingers.
Josh showed some excellent speed when chasing Norwich, and Nathan showed brute force when standing up against the opposition and tackling. Jack played prop and helped win scrums for Swaffham.
The main highlight of the game came when Aubrey Grimes showed immense determination and strong speed when having intercepted a Norwich ball, he sprinted up the inside line towards the Norwich try line only to be stopped by a Norwich player just short of the line.
The final score of this match was 30 – 0.
The team consisted of Aubrey Grimes, Jared Milligan, Joe Furniss, Edward O’Brien, Callum Robb, Sam Sayer, Alex Czarnowski, Rory Saunders, Jack Dodsworth, Christopher Lloyd, Nathan Sturman, Josh Panes and Sebastian Bissell and showed great improvement in this ever developing squad.
U10 Match Report Sunday 11 March
Swaffham U10 vs. Fakenham U10
Swaffham were quick to attack once their first game of the morning started, almost immediately after Fakenham had kicked the ball, Jack Dodsworth went in to make his first tackle of the morning and successfully passed the ball to Joe Furniss. Sebastian Bissell then moved the ball up the pitch and after some more assertive play, Rory Saunders took the ball over the line to score the first try for Swaffham. Callum Robb quickly took the ball back to the Fakenham line, and after a number of line outs in which Swaffham had manoevered the opposition off the pitch, Sam Sayer took the ball over the line to score the second try. There were a number of successful passes between Edward O’Brien, Joe Furniss and Callum Robb which resulted in Callum taking the ball across to score the third try of the morning. Fakenham scored a try at the half time whistle but Edward O’Brien and Rory Saunders had also scored tries for Swaffham so that Swaffham were leading 25: 5. After half time in which Swaffham were able to make some changes to their squad, the ball was very quickly taken back to the Fakenham try line. Aubrey Grimes scored another try for Swaffham, and Fakenham responded. There some very good tackles Christopher Lloyd and Jared Milligan as well as some good passing between Jack Fergusson and Sam Sayer.
Final Score Swaffham 30: Fakenham 10
Swaffham U10 vs. North Walsham U10
In their second game of the morning, Swaffham played against North Walsham, although Jared Milligan had already met them when he had a guest appearance for a depleted Fakenham side. Jack Fergusson then quickly took the ball across to score the first try for Swaffham. The game was very evenly matched with Swaffham holding the score 5:0 at half time. North Walsham then took the ball back to equalise. Match Report Swaffham U10 vs. West Norfolk U10 12 November2006
After an initial slow start the Swaffham squad produced some very good moves and the resulting scores from the three games played did not reflect the level of determination that was seen on the pitch or the possession that Swaffham had of the ball. The front row of Joe Furniss, Aubrey Grimes and Jared Milligan proved very powerful and won all but one of the scrums awarded to them as well as some awarded to the opposition. The players are showing signs of working well together with some excellent supportive play and rucking.
In the first game, Callum Robb made a number of very good tackles before being injured just before half time. Despite moving the ball forwards, Swaffham were unable to cross the West Norfolk try line and were unable to respond when West Norfolk turned the ball to sprint back and score a try. By half time, Swaffham were losing 15:0. The second half saw much more determined play from the whole team, but they were unable to stop another two tries being scored. Final score 25: 0 to West Norfolk.
Swaffham showed much more determination in the second game with some good tackling from Sam Sayer in his first match for Swaffham and Rory Saunders. Christopher Lloyd and Luke Fortune both made determined attempts to intercept the West Norfolk break, whilst Edward O’Brien, Alex Czarnowski, Joe Furniss and Rory Saunders tried to move the ball forwards. Both Jared Milligan and Aubrey Grimes proved to be very strong in the rucks which resulted in Swaffham moving the ball towards the West Norfolk line, but despite having been awarded a number of scrums and penalties Swaffham were unable to cross the line and by half time, West Norfolk were winning 20:0. In the second half, West Norfolk quickly scored their fifth try and Alex Czarnowski responded by making a break and successfully passed the ball to Rory Saunders who scored the first try for Swaffham. Swaffham then managed to keep the ball in the middle of the pitch for the remainder of the game. Final score West Norfolk 25: Swaffham 5.
The final short game of the morning resulted in a very quick try from Alex Czarnowski but Swaffham were unable to stop West scoring five tries in response.

Match Report - Prima Cup 29 Oct
Sunday 29 Oct saw Swaffham RUFC play hosts to the Prima Tiger Cup held in association with Leicester Tigers.
With 11 Under 10 club teams and beautiful warm sunny weather the day was set perfectly.
Swaffham’s 1st match of the morning saw them play Diss. Swaffham won the toss and opted to start play. With the ball keenly passed from Rory Saunders throughout the squad, Swaffham pushed strongly forward towards the try line, only to miss out on the try when the ball was unfortunately dropped short of the try line. Eager to continue pushing hard Swaffham continued to make ground with a fantastic dummy by Alex Czarnowski which fooled almost everyone on the pitch. A tackle by Diss saw Alex hit the floor and lose control of the ball. Whilst Diss were awarded the scrum Swaffham won it against the head and the ball was picked up by Callum Robb. Making good ground the ball was passed to Joe Furniss who got to the try line but was disallowed the try.
The reminder of the 1st half seemed to be consecutive scrums awarded to Diss each time won with an awesome display of power by Joe Furniss and Aubrey Grimes as props and Jared Milligan as hooker.
Half time resulted with a 0-0 score.
Diss opened the second half, but a fantastic tackle by Alex Czarnowski saw Swaffham once again in possession of the ball.
Despite some excellent ground making work by Edward O’Brien and Michael Knowles Diss suddenly took hold of the ball and sprinted to their try line.
Literally just before the final whistle Diss took possession of a loose ball and scored their second try of the match.
Final score Swaffham 0 – Diss 10
Team: Alex Czarnowski, Aubrey Grimes, Edward O’Brien, Rory Saunders, Michael Knowles, Callum Robb, Joe Furniss, Jared Milligan and Christopher Lloyd.
Second match – Swaffham v Holt
Holt won the toss and chose to start play.
Swaffham’s Edward O’Brien immediately ripped the ball from Holt and passed it down the line via Adam Merrick, Jake Hardwick and Aubrey Grimes to Alex Czarnowski who placed it over the line for Swaffham’s 1st try of the morning.
Continuous good scrumming by Swaffham and good advancing play by Edward O’Brien, Rory Saunders and Alex Czarnowski saw Swaffham keep control of the ball and push forward all the time.
An injured Adam Merrick left the field being replaced by newcomer Bea Larrington-Spencer. With the team momentarily disrupted Holt took the initiative and replied making the half time score 5-5.
The second half saw Michael Knowles substituted by Luke Fortune with Swaffham starting play.
Swaffham continued to win the scrums and pushed strong taking Holt to their 20 metre line. Winning line-outs and pushing Swaffham certainly looked the stronger of the teams however an ill placed loose ball saw Holt turn events by picking it up and charging towards the Swaffham line.
A further try by Holt resulted in the final score being 15-5 in Holt’s favour.
Team: Alex Czarnowski, Bea Larrington-Spencer, Rory Saunders, Edward O’Brien, Callum Robb, Christopher Lloyd, Aubrey Grimes, Joe Furniss, Michael Knowles, Adam Merrick and Jake Hardwick

Final score North Walsham 25 , Swaffham 0.
Holt
In the second game of the morning, Swaffham showed much more determination with some good individual play from Rory Saunders, Edward O’Brien, Adam Merrick, Aubrey Grimes, Joe Furniss and Callum Robb. By half time, however, Holt were leading by two tries and almost as soon as the second half started had scored their third try. Runs forwards from Sebastian Bissell, Rory Saunders and Alex Czarnowski failed to result in tries for Swaffham. Final score Holt 15, Swaffham 0.
Sudbury
Despite better play by Swaffham Sudbury were leading by two tries at half time. Alex Czarnowski made a valiant attempt for the line but with little support, was not able to get across before Sudbury took possession of the ball and scored their third try. Adam Merrick managed to stop Sudbury so that Edward O’Brien could take the ball forwards but he was stopped by a high tackle just short of the line. Swaffham failed to use the resulting penalty to their advantage and were lucky that Michael Knowles stopped Sudbury from scoring a fourth try just as the final whistle blew. Final score Sudbury 15, Swaffham 0.
