16 September - MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
In the light of further increases in alcohol prices charged by the breweries earlier this year, the club committee have no option but to pass on some of this increase.
However, we have decided to instigate a system whereby those who pay their memberships are rewarded for their loyalty, and feel the best way is by keeping prices to members as low as possible and to enable this to happen we will be issuing membership cards this year which will entitle the bearer to membership rates in both the bar and the club shop.
MEMBERSHIP CARDS 2009/10 SEASON
Orange Cards will be issued to members who are over 17 at the start of the season.
Blue cards will be issued to junior / mini player members who are below that age at the start of the season.
A Family Membership will initially receive one card of each colour. (Extra cards can be issued on request).
As from November 1st this year, all Members will be asked to show their card when buying drinks from the Bar, or purchasing equipment from the shop in order to qualify for membership rates.
If you do not have a card with you - you will still be served, but will be charged non-members rates.
You will either not be served alcoholic drinks if you do not have an Orange Card or if you are old enough you will be charged the non-members rate.
If you lose your card it will not be replaced.

6 September -
Swaffham, under the leadership of new skipper Louis Gunnell, began the 2009 season in fine style by winning the Cambridge round of the national Heineken Tens tournament at their first attempt. The aim was to use the event as a fitness session in preparation for the new league season, but after they were victorious in their first two games against Colchester and Holt having amassed over 60 points with no reply, their competitive spirit kicked in.
A fine draw against Bury St Edmunds guaranteed their place in the top two of the group, and the players then eased off in the final game losing by 20 points to Cambridge. Finishing second in the group gave them a tie against Shelford in the Cup semi-final. It looked like a game they were unlikely to win, as Shelford had finished top of their group amassing a total of over 160 points in four games. However, Swaffham played their own style of rugby and some excellent defensive work kept the young guns down to just three tries and a conversion, in reply to Swaffhams three tries and two conversions. This gave them a superb 19-17 victory and a place in the final. Shelford, the organisers, and most of the partisan crowd were surprised, but Swaffham had achieved their final place through excellent team work and support play, rather than individual brilliance.
The final was against Esculodians, an invitational side, brought up for the day from London, and Swaffham knew that to play an open game against a side full of pacy ball players would be asking for trouble. With that in mind the crowd were treated to some awesome offloads, and possession rugby from Swaffham and they spent nearly 10 of the first twelve minutes with the ball in the oppositions half. During that period both sides scored converted tries leaving the half time score finely balanced at 7-7. In the second half it was the professional side that started to wane and some strong driving play by the Swaffham forwards, eventually made the space for DJ Barnard to score under the posts for the winning try. Esculodians tried to fight back at the end but their handling let them down and Swaffham ended the game deep in opposition territory and with a 14-7 advantage. It’s a good job Carlsberg don’t do rugby!
WELL DONE BOYS!

09 May 2009 - DAVID ROUTLEDGE
It is with much sadness and deepest regret that the Club announces the demise of David Routledge on Monday 4th May 2009. David had been bravely fighting a debilitating illness for a number of weeks past but still insisted on seeing his close relatives and friends whenever possible and his diminishing strength allowed, always extending his customary cheerful and warm welcome.
David, who joined Swaffham RUFC as a founder member in 1981 was also a Club Trustee. He was a devoted servant of the Club for almost 28 years, serving on the club committee and as President, Chairman, Secretary and, in recent years, as Vice-Presidents Secretary.
David also spent many years teaching science at Swaffham Hamonds High School and was a Deputy Head Teacher, on his retirement some six or seven years ago.
A pint on a Saturday afternoon, in season, will just not be the same, without his cheerful demeanour; his willingness to talk to and encourage all and his warm 'Geordie' humour.
The Club extends sincere condolences to his wife Margaret and Michael and Jane, his two children.
God Bless you Dave.

24 Feruary 2009 - All clubs have received THIS LETTER from Huw Davies who is responsible for discipline for Eastern Counties. PLEASE READ IT. As Youth Chairman Spike has spoken with Eastern Counties regarding this letter and whilst any abuse of any official is unacceptable the point was raised that given the numbers involved this is a very small level issue. For example 40 Red Cards of which 25% relate to the youth game (10) of which 30% are for abuse of the official (3). Most clubs have 4 youth age groups and if we assume that each age group has 25 players that is 100 players per club per week. With 30+ clubs in Eastern Counties that is 3000 players per week or 30,000 over 10 weeks which means that the level of Red Cards is 0.0001%. HOWEVER LETS ENSURE WE ARE NOT THE 4TH CLUB THEY NEED TO SPEAK TO!
22 February 2009 - The Under 14s match report is HERE. Pictures from the 2nd team match from 21 February can be found HERE
