STAFFORDSHIRE U16s 10 NORTH MIDLANDS 31
The 16 group’s final match turned out to be a somewhat disappointing end to the season. The game started well with two early tries from the prolific Jack Sporcic, his 7th of the season , and Callum Turner (KES Lichfield and Lichfield RFC), who was rewarded for persistence in charging down the North Mids fullback’s clearance kick.
There then followed a period of North Mids pressure which resulted in a converted try. Staffs were getting back into the game, and would have gone into half time with a lead, except for an intercept try from the North Mids winger which was converted to leave Staffs 14-10 down at the interval.
The second half belonged to North Mids, with two converted tries and a penalty to leave the final score 31-10 in their favour.
The score line is a little harsh on the Staffs players who never gave up against a team who played some of their best rugby of their campaign.
After the final Midlands County game, it was announced that six members of the Staffs squad will go forward to the Midlands Development weekend at Solihull School on Dec 1st and 2nd. The six are Jack Sporcic, Joe Cobden, Matt Smith, all KES Lichfield and Lichfield RFC; Dan Robson, Newcastle Sch and Stoke RFC; Kyle Protheroe, St. Thomas More HS and Newcastle RFC and John Hancock, St Joseph’s Coll and Newcastle RFC.
Our congratulations go to these six members of the squad, along with best wishes for the Midlands trial that follows.
Although these six boys have been selected, it would be wrong not to congratulate all members of the squad who have performed so well throughout their short season. All the boys can be proud of their achievements and should look forward to further successes at County level in seasons to come.
Well done to you all.
