Staffordshire County Squads
The Under 14 A squad, just like last season had a frustrating time with changes and cancellations. In all squads there was good organisation and coaching to prepare the young players for Rugby beyond club level. Many of the squad sessions and matches were held mid week and our thanks must go to all the clubs that so generously made their facilities and lights available.
On behalf of myself and the other Squad Managers, I would also like to thank Steve Barr and Mike Hibbert who have been so helpful and co-operative in the provision of referees for these important matches.

It should be noted that B squad fixtures are not that easy to get and we often end up playing another area’s A squad. Nine of our Under 16 players achieved the distinction of being invited to Midlands Division Development, three playing for the Division. Luke Massey and Mark Deville went on to represent England at B squad level. The RFU has been conducting an Age Grade Review and we will need to examine the implications, it is proposed that monthly coaching sessions take place throughout the season and the number of matches played by the younger squads is severely curtailed.
Under 15 players from the Staffs A and B squads were selected to participate in the National 10s competition. Despite finding themselves physically speaking just about the smallest squad there, they did well on the first day and gained a place in the pool for third placed teams. In this pool they beat their two Midlands rivals and went out to the eventual winner. Manager Eric Stokes describes them as having represented Staffordshire with credit. Four Under 15 club sides represented Staffordshire in the West Midlands Festival with varying degrees of success. As part of its initiatives for player retention the RFU has developed regional and national competitions for clubs Under 17s. Four club’s Under 17 sides represented Staffordshire in Midlands competitions, one each in the National Cup and Plate, and one each in the Midlands Bowl and Shield competitions. Wolverhampton are to be congratulated on their success in the National Cup, losing narrowly in the Midlands final to Worcester.
Finally I must say a big thank you, to all the members of the sub Committee, their work on the Committee being just a small part of the great ommitment they give to Staffordshire Youth.
